Personally, my advice, after reading this thread, would be to discuss the works of Lewis Carroll, especially
this bit.Mind you, it's not like I'm gonna be there or nothin...
if we're going that route, i would follow-up with
this book.

Yesterday jml had suggested a preliminary meetup of the TT Bookclub Executive Committee (TBooExCom) to decide which book should be read and what sort of cake should be served. Said meeting of the TBooExCom would take place on a Sunday. If you are reading this message, you may consider yourself a member of the TBooExCom.
All attendess to suggest 1 (one) book which should be a) in English,

easy to purchase and/or obtain from the library, c) of general interest to the group d) hopefully one which no one has already read.
So, Sunday 2 October for the first TBooExCom meeting? If no more than 10 people are interested, I can host it at my place, otherwise we'd need to come up with a larger venue. One which serves cake.

1) everyone invited?
2) Oct 2?
3) where?
4) what books? life of pi? kite runner?
5) if yes to question 1 can I bring a bottle of wine?

So yeah perdido no need to actually read a book prior...good lord man, dont you know the wiesn is on...you can pitch a book. Don't know of Confederacy of Dunces is readily available in these parts but FYI: leave my mat out of this (sorry folks inside book joke).
Oh and just to be clear, i meant this really just to bring on the cake eating.

I'm interested. This is what I originally intended the
Bookswap to be about, but it evolved into something different. The
Amerika Haus also has a monthly book club meeting that I've never been to -- has anyone here been there? It might be more aimed at Germans who want to practice English, but I don't know.

A Literary Evening

Do you enjoy reading and talking about books in English? Then come to our monthly Literary Evening. This time we will talk about About Grace by Anthony Doerr. (See also reading with the author on Oct. 18th) Dr. Richard Manson will lead the discussion.
Next session: 08 Nov., 6 p.m.
Topic: It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis
I vote for the kite book and hope that nobody's taken it from the TB yet because I'm broke.

Once again, if you are reading this messge, you may consider yourself a member of the TT Book Club Executive Committee (TBooExCom). The purpose of the first meeting is to:
1) decide which book we are going to read
2) decide how often we should meet and where
3) clarify any other unanswered questions
4) buy jml a drink before she disappears for a few months
This Sunday (2 October) has been mentioned (by me, if memory serves) as a possible date, but I now notice that Monday is a holiday. If this date doesn't work, I'm open to other suggestions. I'm happy to have people at my place so long as it's a fairly reasonable number. I can handle around 20 people if we're all drinking and hanging out, but 10 is about the ceiling for polite literate discourse.

If it were STV, then my second vote would go to "other" - somewhere that is not in a cellar, basically (no offense).

I voted for some sort of biergarten as it would likely be able to accomodate a large group and still allow everyone to talk. Also, with most folk at the Wies'n they likely won't be too crowded. But, the TBooExCom is a joint collective that doesn't have leaders and reflects the communal will of its members- kinda like the Diggers, or the Hog Farm or the Merry Pranksters. Sorry, just got done reading "Long Strange Trip" by Dennis McNally. If I weren't so keen on regular showers, I woulda made a good hippie.
One other point. If you are absolutely, positively, 100% metaphysically certain that you intend to go and that wild horses couldn't possibly prevent you from being there, please indicate so along with any necessary qualifying comments such as time and location, i.e. "I will ABSOLUTELY be there if I don't have to show up until 3:00" or "I wouldn't set foot in UpQuark's filthy apartment, but if it's held anyplace else you can BET YOUR SOUL on the fact that I will indeed attend". There seemed to be some interest on the other thread, but this one hasn't seen nearly as much action, and it would greatly help the TBooExCom if we (non-royal we) knew how many people were interested in attending.

One other, other point: is anyone tempted by Unionsbräu as a preliminary venue? They might actually get me to drink a beer again after the wreckage I put my system through this weekend.
Screw it, i vote for the kiddie area of the
KFC. its outdoors, they serve chicken and bier and i would bring brownies.
Just kidding. anywhere is fine with me. i think we won't get a head count til a definite time and place is posted though so its pretty hard to say. i would say shoot for:
Sunday 4.3o-6.3opm. That would allow early Ofest goers to make it if they're still standing, and later O'fest goers to swing by for a while if they're so inclined.
It would be nice to find somewhere you can actually have a chat instead of getting stuck at long tables, so with that said i vote for:
1. UpQuark's Place. Note to self: I can't wait to get my fingers in that sorghum jar.
2. TwiBa in case of too many people. I 100% agree with Topsy that a cellar in this weather isn't my first choice, but if you take the back room, its really damn easy..no need to stress over exact number of reservations or the weather, and people could overflow into the bookswap. Anyhoo, its the lazy bastards option, which would be a good thing coming out the gate. IMHO.
Cheers,
jml

Unfortunately, I can't make it as I'll be on holiday for most of October.
I hope that doesn't mean I can't join the group/club at a later date...
Here's a thought: given that there seems to be a lot of people interested in this club and that some seem interested in meeting on a Sunday while others want to meet mid-week, why not organise two separate groups? Too complicated?

Sep 27 2005, 8:25 am
I'll come, but if it's a huge crowd, maybe I'll pass. Huge being anything more than 7, which seems likely. I've had enough of them right now. I also think you are likely to end up discussing half the books you might choose, so it's more likely to be a book discussion than a book decision.
The only thing I would say is that I don't think "The Curious Incident with the Dog etc etc" is a great book for discussion. It's a good book, but I don't think there's much to it. What you read is what you get.

Hi, it seems that everyone knows each other here, but I love reading books and would also like to meet new friends, so I am really keen on joining this event. Octoberfest 2nd is good for me, the proposed 4:30 to 6:30pm is a reasonable time and I voted for UpQuark's home.

Actually it means that you need to finish the book that we choose this Sunday before the next time we meet. Whenever that is.
QUOTE

That will likely prove to be one of the constraints. Recommendations for obscure Guatemalan authors who can only be found in antiquarian bookstores will likely not be of much interest to the group.

FYI - as of yesterday there were at least 3 copies of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night" available at the Stadtbibliothek in the
Gasteig.
part of the original idea (besides for me to eat cake) was to talk about
1. dates: October 16th was the first date floated around
2. meet other people: think its easier for newbie to participate in a book club if you know the people a bit.
3. books: settle on the first book
don't know if this still makes sense or not, i mean you could settle the book by poll really and go with katrina's october 16th suggestion. in any case, i have that day down as cake eating day.

The only potential revision to that list may the substitution of "some cake" for "a drink" in item 4. Ideas related to genre, where to obtain books etc.- although fascinating to read about- are all elements of that first item and can be discussed when we meet.
The date of the first meeting has been set as this Sunday 2 October. The location has not yet been finalized, though TB will likely be the venue. I would suggest this Friday at 5:00 as a reasonable cutoff for input on the location. The time has not yet been determined, though late afternoon seems to work for most people. Again, I would suggest Friday at 5:00 as the point at which a decision about the precise time should be made. To that end, I'm proposing 4:00-6:00.
