Munich's winter service season (Winterdienst) officially started on 01.Nov.2005. This means that the snow-clearers and road-gritting machines are now on standby. When snow levels reach at least 3cm the system will swing into action.

The city is legally obliged to keep its 2,300 km of roads and cycle paths free of snow between 7am and 8pm on week days. The road clearing machines set to work between 2 and 4am, depending on snowfall, so that the roads are clear by 7am. For environmental reasons salt may only be used on main roads and roads which are part of the bus network. All other roads are treated with grit. The city is also reminding everyone to fit their cars with winter tyres now. Don't wait until it is too late! See previous TT chat topics about winter tyres.

All Munich residents outside of the Mittlerring are legally obliged to clear the paths and pavements outside their home. The paths must be cleared by 7am on weekdays and Saturdays, and by 8am on Sundays and public holidays. This clearing must be repeated until 8pm as often as necessary such that pedestrians are not put in danger. The laying of salt is forbidden and can bring a fine of up to 1,000 Euro. See previous TT chat topics about snow clearing.

But when will the first snows arrive in Munich?

The UK's Met Office is predicting a colder than average winter for much of Europe. According to their 'North Atlantic Oscillation Report' the winter of 2005/06 will be placed among the coldest third of winters over the last 50 years.

QUOTE
Confidence in long-range predictions is relatively low compared to our normal short-period forecasts. Typically the broad features of the forecast for the European region are correct two out of every three occasions. Using a traffic light analogy we consider that people should remain on amber alert for the prospect of a colder-than-average winter.
Munich's first snow falls in previous years are as follows: (source: pauljames.de / munich weather)

27.Oct.1997 - end of October was unusually cold, Munich's first snow fell on the morning of the 27th
01.Nov.1998 - 30 minutes of snow on 1st November, during the 3rd week of the month it snowed for 6 days
22.Nov.1999 - very heavy snow to a depth of 30cm
28.Dec.2000 - light snow at the end of December, exact date unknown
15.Nov.2001 - light snow fall mid-November, exact date unknown
23.Sep.2002 - snow during Oktoberfest! Exact date according to Sin's memory
15.Dec.2003 - see the TT chat when the first snow of 2003 started to fall
07.Nov.2004 - ...and the TT chat for first snow of 2004

Yes Yes Yes, Yahooooo!!! Finally it's coming down!!

I am happy that I am inside at the moment though, it doesn't look nice to go out there.

I hope that all the people who wanted snow are now happy because I'm not.

I'm trying to remember if it was 2002 or 2003, we had a few very cold days in September. Snow actually fell one morning during Oktoberfest!

Didn't stick around though.

September 2002, my first oktoberfest. I really did wonder what was up with this place where we got snow in september, what was I letting myself in for.

On another note, for some reason I was dreaming about the snow falling last night, I got no idea why, or what got that idea into my head. sad.gif

Off: http://deutung.com/

(dreaming of) snow symbolizes emotional problems and is a warning against surpressing them or shows that they are cooling but can be rekindled. It is a symbol of old age, for men also of fear of impotence. The Egyptians claim that if you see snow your personal circumstances will change.

Or it means that you can't wait for the ski season to start.

Twas on the 23rd September 2002. My sister's birthday (otherwise I would have forgotten the date).

Nah...winter´s not coming this year. I still have a Sunflower on my balcony - real popular with the bees this morning...November blink.gif ??

I am not going to miss winter

If you live in Munich, you're right, you won't miss it. But if you skip out to Kenya or somewhere, you might miss it.

i wonder how cold "one of the coldest winters" really is?
it's nice to hear that they clear bike paths though... at least some route to run, walk, walk dogs etc smile.gif

'clear' is relative..
mic
A cold winter is when you can walk (or skate) across Starnbergersee and you're not Jose Mourinho (who can walk across it any time of the year). The only such winter I recall here was 97/98.
sarabyrd
1984/85 was evil: -25°C for about 8 days. And 1985/86 there was about a foot of snow on November 14. Not quite so cold, though.
Hutcho
Well, I am going to make a bold predicition and if I'm reading the charts right (there is a very good chance I'm not - http://www.wetter-zentrale.de) there is a good chance of our first snow late next week. Its typical because I'm going back to London for a few days on Thursday night. Unfortunate, but maybe it'll come early on Wednesday or Thursday and I'll get lucky.
Timmeh
Cool, snow. My weather thingeemajig predicts this:
Darkknight
I don't think it will be snowing this month.. It's still to warm...
My $$ will be going to the 2nd/3rd week of December..

It's even forcasted to RAIN next week...

@mattiehh: Yeah, sure they clear the bike paths of snow...but they then become paths of pure ice usually. You could skate to work?? OK. My guess for snow is next Thursday. The sooner the better!!!
UrbanAngel
Snow is forecast for:

Sat 19th
Sun 20th
Mon 21st
Tues 22nd

(then the weather report stops as it's only a 10-day one). -5C to -1C.

oh fuckshitbollockstitscu*twank! we've got the removal guys coming next monday. the last thing i want is to be clearing damn snow when i have quite enough to be doing inside the house. and then slush 'n' shit being tramped through the new house, gahhhhhh!! this has been our worst nightmare about the move over for the past few weeks. pleeease just a few more days calm weather. it can do what the chuff it likes on tuesday.

@UA, how reliable have you found this weather forecast before?
UrbanAngel
Grazzenger - no worries, it's a week on Monday, not next Monday.
How reliable? Pretty good, better than wetter.de

Feel like I'm gonna see a porno website though whenever I type wetter.com in!
grazzenger
hi UA, unfortunately, it is a week on monday when we're moving!! i usually use wetter.de but now i'll check this as well as it has a 10 day forecast. right, off to check usaf european weather charts. this could be very messy! (mwahaha, yes, like it a bit wetter, eh?!)
UrbanAngel
biggrin.gif No comment!
Hmm well, get the wellies out then, hope it's not too bad for you.

I am away from Thursday night until Wednesday night. Just letting people know, because this is when it will snow.

It will start Friday, continue Saturday, Sunday, Monday and will stop on Tuesday and will all be completely melted by Wednesday night.

You can put money on this.

I live out in the sticks, and managed to cycle to work every day last winter. On a crap bike. I wouldn't fancy it on the roads, but this is Germany and you can stick to the cycle paths.
Timmeh
has anyone had any flurries today?? My puter tells me today could be the day.

Thank God my plane heading for the Florida Keys is leaving at 7 am on Wednesday!!

And @ Grazzenger - I hear you and feel for you. It snowed the day before we moved out of our old place and into the new house. We had one group of people who ran between the truck and the house and another set between the front door of the house and the 3 levels. We were able to keep the wet feet people outside. Luckily it wasn't actually snowing the day we moved. You'll be fine!
Chicago
it's time to winterize the feet!!

Think it was just a figure of speech, although I did have a sly €20 on with my colleague that it would snow before 21.11.05 (thanks for the Stats Ed Bob!), which he paid up in advance today. The UK online bookies usually run a market on White Christmas in London and you can trade it on Betfair. Currently ~4.5-1 (5.5 expressed as dig odds). They define it thus:
a single snow flake must be observed falling in the 24 hours of December 25th 2005 on the London Weather Centre

So guess you would have to make Munich a lot tighter as a price. Anyone know how it has stacked up the last few years. Guess the question for Munich should be whether it snows on 24th Dec, rather than 25th..
Hutcho
Weather is still looking good to screw me over..

Remember I fly out at 10pm on Thursday. You can let everyone know that this is when it will start.
grazzenger
ooh lummy! wetter.com now predicts snowfall from this friday onwards as far as it can see! getting heavier (ie turning from leichter schnee to schnee) on tuesday or wednesday next week. light snow i can deal with and once we're moved in, it can chuck the stuff down and then we can all go skiing!
kiltedkirsty
yay time for me to get my pink wellies out :-)

Hrm. I need to get my winter tires & rims (which are on order) installed next Wednesday all the way cross town. Was planning just not to drive for the winter, but something came up and I have to drive 2x per week.

Anyone with a large car want to help pick 'em up with me next Wed if there's snow painting the city tongue.gif

grazzenger
i reckon there'll be a sprinkling first thing on friday morning with maybe a few flakes in the air.
