Munich's winter service season (Winterdienst) officially started on 01.Nov.2005. This means that the snow-clearers and road-gritting machines are now on standby. When snow levels reach at least 3cm the system will swing into action.
The city is legally obliged to keep its 2,300 km of roads and cycle paths free of snow between 7am and 8pm on week days. The road clearing machines set to work between 2 and 4am, depending on snowfall, so that the roads are clear by 7am. For environmental reasons salt may only be used on main roads and roads which are part of the bus network. All other roads are treated with grit. The city is also reminding everyone to fit their cars with winter tyres now. Don't wait until it is too late! See previous
TT chat topics about winter tyres.
All Munich residents outside of the Mittlerring are legally obliged to clear the paths and pavements outside their home. The paths must be cleared by 7am on weekdays and Saturdays, and by 8am on Sundays and public holidays. This clearing must be repeated until 8pm as often as necessary such that pedestrians are not put in danger. The laying of salt is forbidden and can bring a fine of up to 1,000 Euro. See previous
TT chat topics about snow clearing.

But when will the first snows arrive in Munich?
The UK's Met Office is
predicting a colder than average winter for much of Europe. According to their 'North Atlantic Oscillation Report' the winter of 2005/06 will be placed among the coldest third of winters over the last 50 years.
QUOTE
Confidence in long-range predictions is relatively low compared to our normal short-period forecasts. Typically the broad features of the forecast for the European region are correct two out of every three occasions. Using a traffic light analogy we consider that people should remain on amber alert for the prospect of a colder-than-average winter.
