QUOTE
"I went often to look at the collection of curiosities in Heidelberg Castle, and one day I surprised the keeper of it with my German. I spoke entirely in that language. He was greatly interested; and after I had talked a while he said my German was very rare, possibly a "unique"; and wanted to add it to his museum.

If he had known what it had cost me to acquire my art, he would also have known that it would break any collector to buy it. Harris and I had been hard at work on our German during several weeks at that time, and although we had made good progress, it had been accomplished under great difficulty and annoyance, for three of our teachers had died in the mean time. A person who has not studied German can form no idea of what a perplexing language it is."

The above is a snippet from "The Awful German Language" by Mark Twain.

Ok put me off learning German smile.gif
One thing I noticed about the German language is that it seems so agressive could I say. Compared to the english language or french for example where we seem alot softer in out tone.

This article is hysterical!! For anyone who has tried (or is currently trying) to learn the German language, this is a must read. http://www.bdsnett.no/klaus/twain/

It's a bit long, but read it through. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yes, it's a lovely book and really well written. Very witty and apt, and it looks good. I got the hard back lilac version. It's a treasure. rolleyes.gif

Yep, I've got it as well. It really highlights the difficulties of trying to learn German for an English speaker.

Yes, but at the same time, it helps you understand the structure of the German language more, due to the way it's compared to English. It is all beautifully described

>>it seems so agressive
That's the German edge :-). However I listened to quite a few songs in German and they sound truely melodious, specially the ones in animations. So far as sound of the language is concerned, German is a good language if you want to be aggressive but it's great even if you want to be soft...

Was it Mark Twain or Oscar Wilde who said only the dead have time to learn German which is why God created eternity? I forget.
