Hello all!

Remember, remember the fifth of November...?

If you know the next line, then I dont see why you shouldn´t come and join the bonfire party on Saturday.

The GEA bonfire takes place out of town, in Mariabrunn near Dachau. Its a lot of fun, a whole afternoon and evening if you want. The real bonfire-builders go out in car-sharing from Scheidplatz at 2pm. If you can only come along later - especially for fireworks at 7:30pm - you will have to make your own way there; dont be too late and miss the fun. We sell Glühwein, soup, sausages and things from a catering tent in the field, to keep us glowing.

Or how about Friday evening? Thats when we make the "Guy" at the club "Stammtisch". If you want to come and help, get the details from our website.

Note: this is the 400 year anniversary of the "gunpowder plot": so Saturday´s event should be a big one!

Sue

GEA Bonfire & Frireworks Celebration

Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder, treason should ever be forgot.
billybob
l went last year and it was good - gluhwein, cakes and parkin, fireworks,
big fire etc. - so l defo recommed it
but note - it's in a field in the middle of nowhere on the way to dachau. A real bugger to find (even if you have a car) but it's great to have a bonfire on 5th Nov
woolleym
We're thinking about going to see the fireworks and then to watch the Catholic traitor being burn to death (*).

Does anyone want a lift (2 or 3 places free)?

(*) - when written like this, it does make you wonder how "Firework night" ever got classified as good honest family entertainment (especially here is Bavaria!)? huh.gif
laura_k
Ah great ! I was going to be gutted to miss bonfire night. & being car-less I would very much appreciate a lift.. I'll swap you a lift for a beer? & if there is still another spare lift-place I will ask my friend Katie. Fireworks!

Laura

I think that this is a terrorist event and should be banned. This probably rates up there with the old Irish men taunting little 12yo Catholic school girls on their way to school. Enough of the bullshit already.
Keydeck
Indeed, I should probably take offence or somesuch and nip around and kneecap the lot of you. Or bring marshmallows or something.
bluedave
just hopin that eurovol was taking the piss ??

love a bonfire and treacle toffee and parkin, great fun, especially for the kids biggrin.gif
Kat
The GEA do make a nice bonfire, though I find it rather inconveniently far out of town.

"Guy Fawkes' night isn't harmless fun: it's a celebration of torture and religious persecution" - http://www.guardian.co.uk/print/0,3858,532...-103677,00.html

Is this Munich's branch of the KKK? Pathetic really...
sea-king
Cos it was a Protestant Goverment and they didn`t want any left footers running the country, by the way I am one too1 blink.gif
Allershausen
Either that or a celebration of the first foiling of a terrorist action! Depends which side of the fence you're looking from! wink.gif
Exile
Durring Thatcher's reign you used to see "Guy Fawkes where are you, when we need you" graffitti in the UK around this time of year.
robbieinmunich
Is this a tt thing?

Yes and no. Bonfires are great and celebrating a seasonal spirit is also great (I celebrate Christmas, but more as a celebration of the spirit and not in the biblical sense).
I just have the feeling that this celebration is far too often associated with the connotations of the original event that caused the tradition in the first place. It seems very British to hold a grudge for far too long. There is something disturbing about that. wink.gif
Now if it is just an excuse to party hardy, then go for it, but leave the devil out of the details. That tends to spoil the fun. biggrin.gif
UrbanAngel
I get to be home this year round. Parkin cake, toffee apples, salted baked potatoes, black peas.. not been home for years on Bonfire Night.

Not really. We do it for the kids. In the same way that Dad's buy their kids model railways and Scalextric sets.
eurovol
Well, I hope the stories told to the kids do not indoctrinate them into the "hate" factor of the tradition. That would just propagate the wrongs commited on both sides for the last 1200 or so years. I use 1200 because the first shit to hit the Catholic fan began in 800 or so with the forerunner to what we know as the inquisitions.
Sin
Bloody Hell! That's miles out.
Topsy
yeah, it is miles out - the restaurant there is really nice, though smile.gif

it's nothing to do with burning catholics (well, obv, originally it was), it's just an excuse to have a big bonfire, eat nice food and let off some fireworks
it's definitely nothing to do with hate, that's for sure
benpanter
A straw poll of brits two years ago[1] found that the majority knew that Guy Fawkes planned to blow up parliament. Only a small fraction knew that the chap was a catholic.

It's not catholic bashing, it's just an excuse for a party.

@ eurovol
the great majority of people have no idea it had anything to do with catholics, ok ?

all they know is there was a foiled plot to blow up parliament

it's an excuse to watch pretty fireworks and have fun with the kids while eating treacle toffee wrapped up against the winter chill

now lighten up, please

Anybody going down to this later just for the fireworks and bonfire? If so, are they offering a lift at around 6ish? Couldn't make the 2pm slot.
NOFXmike
we were going to go...but it looks like it'd probably be a bit wet :-\

Civilization IV came out this last week, so I'll be busy with that, I guess

We're getting a lift from the S-Bahn at Röhrmoos at around 6pm that the people from the GEA organised. The problem is of course that now they're all bonfire building and you might not be able to get hold of them...
DJ_Jazzy_Guff
Yeah I tried calling them but no joy. What are the odds of finding this place on foot? Not good I reckon and could be a mare to get back from. Hmmmm...
kathie
Will PM you...
Topsy
it's truly a mare to get to on foot, not to mention getting back at night - wouldn't recommend it, tbh
hope you manage to get there, though smile.gif
robbieinmunich
Well I just got back and it was allot of fun. With a cold 100 to 150 people turn out i thought it was quite good!

The fireworks display was really sweet with most of the rockets having a bigger start up than the explosion themselves. The Speech before hand given by the organiser was in ENGLISH then in GERMAN. The fir was Lit and then stuffed man which was sitting on the chair actually fell forward but then was pushed with a long pole back onto the high flames. The cheers were loud and it was quite warm.

6.5° made it all the better. A deffinite go for next year. Well done to the organisers and i must say...without GPS in the car we woudlnt of found it...

Heres to a a very good night smile.gif

Rob
kathie
Well, sorry I didn't meet you Rob! Just got back as well, and can only second Robbie's comments. Took a while to get started, as we arrived at 6pm and nothing happened till 8pm, and then Glühwein didn't arrive till 8:30, but once it got going, it was a nice do! Met some amusing germans as well, who got snotty because somebody threw a plastic binbag on the fire... perhaps my "Aber haben wir eigentlich eine Genehmigung?" comment in a loud voice wasn't a good idea, since they then decided it must have been us that threw the bin bag, but hey...
Was nice to see some familiar faces and meet some new people!
Marcoman
I'd like to say thank you to the organisers for making this possible. I met some very pleasant people and all the English was rather nice.
If I may be allowed some comments: It would be good if the bar could be open beforehand especially for mulled wine, and it would be good if we could avoid putting rubbish (binbags, newspapers) on the bonfire.

But it was a truly enjoyable evening.
OhFFS
So you had to do with a stuffed Catholic 'eh? They seem to be trying to do better in Paris, again, at the moment...

Was eyeing up a train set this evening in Aldi but my wife reminded me that my girl is only 2!
Allershausen
It was very good. Took a bit of a time to get going, but once it did it was good. The glühwein was good but the hot dogs were cold, but what the hell. A big advantage for me was that it was only 15 minutes from home!
DJ_Jazzy_Guff
Was a good laugh. The fireworks were a bit pony and the safety demonstration was...well...amusing. Even my German is better than that geeza's and that's saying something! But remember kids, don't be having any fun now cos fireworks are dangerous. Give me a break! Good fire though and glühwein helped warm the bones but they should have been serving that long before. Still, at least some of us started off in a nice warm pub, eh Kathie?!

Fireworks can be very dangerous! Bonfire Night
DJ_Jazzy_Guff
Yeah but there's nothing you can do about that. Adults are as at risk as kids when something like that happens. I'm fully aware of the dangers of fireworks but that dude was just a bit too stern to the kids in my opinion.

Actually he was sweet in letting everyone know. Because I know for a fact, he needs to say that because if soemthing happens he will be burnt next year by lawyers stating that it was not mentioned!

so give the guy a break - Its for the kids not the the bigger children smile.gif !!!

P.s. Whats with PARKIN!
The chick behind the bar bit said what do you think - i had to say...

Tastes like the name - Parkin - sorry but not my cup of gluhwein at all... YUK huh.gif
