First bottles, now papers

Are they taking the piss or what??

From Ananova:

German businesses are hoping to charge customers for a deposit on newspapers and magazines.

The Industry and Trade Chamber in Saarland says the deposit would be refunded only if the newspaper was taken back to the shop from where it was bought.

The commerce body says the German government's existing compulsory deposit on drink cans and bottles has been so successful that it wants to extend the scheme to promote further recycling.

President of the chamber, Richard Weber, said: "Newspapers and magazines are exactly like jars, once the contents have been enjoyed the 'packaging' is left over."

According to the country's biggest selling newspaper Bild, a deposit on newspapers will mean an increase in price.

What's successful about the deposit on cans and bottles?

The initial system was probably the absolute worst you could think of - having to return cans and bottles to the place they were purchased from, with a receipt. The current system is not much better. A lot of businesses don't even sell cans or bottles anymore because they can't be arsed with it. The only place I ever bought drinks in cans and disposable bottles is when I go travelling. I never got any deposits back.

The whole system is complete and utter shit...

How are they going to do newspapers? Especially the ones in the "honour system box" Is there going to be an "honour newspaper return box", where you can take back the deposit?
MysteryMan
The thing was supposed to be a disincentive to the use of plastic bottles and cans. As such it has been a huge success.
Hazza
Right, so this will be a disincentive to buy newspapers?

Maybe it will. Bob should start priming the sales pump on advertising on internet cultural newspaper / vanity presses. Why isn't this potentially rain-making legislation being promoted to the hilt?
Hazza
OK, so what will people buy instead of newspapers?

It's easy to replace cans and bottles with other containers...

Hey Keydeck, where did you read it?
Do you have the link concerning that?
PBB
Reminds me of the April Fool´s joke in SZ a few years back that called for a stamp on every fax.

If the Industry Board is involved and as it is not yet April 1, guess it is not a joke.

I actually got it from Ananova.

The original story came out of Bild but I kept getting distracted by secretaries with their bits out so couldn't find it.
Kza
Never mind the article, post the link to the secretaries!

so what will people buy instead of newspapers

I read most of my news now online, it is only very rarely I will buy a newspaper.
daio
What about those free newspapers that come through the post? What'll happen with those?
Keydeck
Same thing only the costs will be passed on to those taking out advertisements.
