Hi Toytown!
I am an avid reader of this forum, but rarely post (I know, I know, I'm a coward!). My husband, my mother, and I are going to Salzburg this weekend and would like some recommendations for restaurants where not only would the food be good, but also the atmosphere. Doesn't necessarily have to be German/Austrian food. I've searched the forum, and have only found a few hotel recommendations. Anyone have any suggestions for restaurants? Thanks!

We will be in Salzburg Nov. 20 and 21. We enjoy casual/traditonal Austrian restaurants. A stop at Augustiner Brau is a must. What are your favorite cozy Salzburg restaurants?

Okay people. I'm going to try once more to revive this topic, cos I've got a little overnight trip to Salzburg planned for this weekend and I think there have GOT to be some of youse who have been there and are just dying to share your restaurant reviews. I'm really surprised this hasn't generated more discussion in the past, seeing as how Salzburg's a popular day-trip/weekend destination.
I've read the Frommers' suggestions and just basically trawled around online, but I'm more interested in TTers' personal experiences. I'm keen to take my travel companion someplace kinda fancy/upscale-like, but hole-in-the-wall places (and anything inbetween) are okay too.

there is a restaurant/wirtshaus by the name of Goldener Stern in the Getreidegasse it has pretty good Austrian food and a very good beer that I forget the name of, was also the one time home of Mozart
just remembered the beer is called Kaltenhausen Bernstein

honestly, I think Salzburg is boring as dirt. Those Mozart museums are a disaster. This time of year, Innsbruck is waaaay more beautiful and lots more to do. The Hirschen Stuben restuarant there is fantastic.

Thanks jellyone.
Eh, my plans have already been made butterbean. I was just in Innsbruck a couple of months ago, and do agree its lovely, but I wanted to go someplace I'd never been. And even if its boring, I still gotta eat, soo...any suggestions?

Hotel Stein is right down on the river, on the new side of the Staatsbrücke. It has a rooftop restaraunt, with a
nice view, if nothing else. I only had a light lunch there, so I can't comment on the quality of the dinner.
I believe they have lots of windows for indoor/winter dining.

Nice! The
cafe/bar/lounge in Hotel Stein doesn't look too bad either - or is that what you were referring to?

Yup, that's it! The Schloss and the river are behind curtain number one.

hotel stein is good to stay at too, as you have a view of the old town over the river in the morning. you'll find most of the restaurants in the old town are very good, the standard is high due to the demands made on the city during the festspiele.

Sorry to be less than helpful gg! My sister and her husband actually just spent last Thursday in Salzburg. They're back in the states already, but I don't recall them mentioning any restaurant in particular. They did want to go to the Mozart dinner concert, but it was sold out. Anyone been to that? There was also a restaurant a few doors down from the Hotel Wolf that was pretty good. Cannot remember the name though (consistent with my less than helpful theme...sorry

)

Ah, no worries bb - thanks for your suggestions! Thanks to greenlakechris and gideon too.
And speaking of dining inside hotels - anybody familiar with
Restaurant Herzl? It's inside the Hotel Goldener Hirsch, which I hear is Salzburg's equivalent of the Bayerischer Hof.

yep eaten there once, they do (did) a great salzburger gnockel, which is basicly a sugar and egg desert shapped to represent the hills around salzburg. order it to share with everybody ts way too much for one normal human being, im racking my brain for the name of another restaurant where i've eaten a few times its half built into the cliff and very nice. will try to think harder.

gideon, is it the Cafe Winkler? I think you take the elevator up the Monchsberg, right through the rock?

Tasty Salzburg restaurants:
http://www.gwandhaus.com/ - near Hellbrunn Zoo and Castle, fabulous food and a great shop for dirndls and tracht.
http://www.imlauer.com/en/restaurant_stieglkeller.shtml - close to the Festung Castle, traditional Austrian and bier halle, good tellerfleisch!
http://www.schlosswirt-anif.com/sprachen/frame_e.html - expensive and a little outside of Salzburg but definitely worth it!
http://www.gaultmillau.at/ar/rs/suche_ssuc...=ADREI000005255 - great site to search for restaurants in Austria, Germany, Italy, etc... they have really good suggestions.
Guten appetit!

Thanks Squirrelgirl, very helpful!
We'll be doing some comparative (maybe even competitive?) eating whilst in Salzburg and will report back on our findings. If the Nockerl as reported by gideon and Gen is to be believed, I may return to Munich a couple of kilos heavier.

Ah yes, the
Stiftskeller St. Peter, very famous apparently.
Fodor's has an interesting little blurb about it:
QUOTE
Legends swirl about the famous "St. Peter's Beer Cellar." Locals claim that Mephistopheles met Faust here, other say Charlemagne dined here, and some believe Columbus enjoyed a glass of its famous Salzburg Stiegl beer just before he set sail for America in 1492. But there is no debating the fact that this place -- first mentioned in a document dating back to 803 -- is Austria's oldest restaurant, part of the famous abbey whose Benedictine monks were Christianity's first ambassadors in these formerly pagan parts. If this is Europe's oldest Gasthaus, it still remains one of the most dazzling dining experiences in Salzburg.
Thanks again gideon and pumpkin.
Hmm is that the place that we went to on the TT Salzburg day trip back in 2004? I am trying to remember who came along, and everyone I can think of hardly posts anymore...
Oh no, Salzburger Nockerl don't make you heavy at all. It's all air inside. MARANG baby. Honestly, it has egg whites, sugar, and like a quarter cup of flour. However, it serves two if one of them's me. Most people will indeed order one of these and share it among four people. *blush*

I'll be there on the first Sunday of Mozart week (just a day trip). Since I have concert tickets at 11 am, I am hoping there'll be good place open for lunch afterwards... do any good ones stay open for lunch until 1430 or so?
