The Fraunhofer makes money by licensing encoder and decoder implementations. I think they do fairly well from it. Companies that make mp3 players for example have to pay royalties.
Most interesting fact is how new Germany is. Depending what you count, its only really been around since 1871. New Zealand is older!
Second most interesting fact is that a lot of western europe are in fact ethnically and culturally descended from germans. England for example, was mostly created by german settlers in the dark ages. Their royaly family now is german. Most english speakers in the world today have german ancestors. English was originally a german dialect. We are all germans really.
