Thanks!

Have a look at: www.lohn1.de

I got my tax perfectly calculated that way.

Java-based tax and many other useful calculators: steuern-online.de/rechner

I just used it to check that we have the right tax class since getting married and found that if we change to III/V we would be 30 cents better off! So much for the tax beneffits of getting married.

This one is quite complicated: n-heydorn.de/steuer

This one is easier: lohn1.de / steuer

Put in monthly figure in "Brutto"
Then click "Berechnung"
Gives a rough idea of a single person with no children with a high medical insurance, and a church goer.
Select "Keine/andere religion" if you are not Catholic/Evengelical, change krankenkasse to about 13%.
If you are married, have kids etc. it gets more complicated.

Try this, nifty freeware. Up to date for 2006. Used it a couple of times already and it was spot-on.

On www.elster-formular.de you can download a software from the German Finanzamt (click on "Download ElsterFormular 2005/2006"), it gives you all the forms you need - nearly fool-proof, as you can't forget anything. At the end, it calculates your tax refund (or what you still have to pay).

Depending on in which Bundesland you live, you can either print the stuff out, sign it & send it off with all the old paperwork to the Finanzamt, or you can also send it online after registration, without the need to send anything in paper or having to put up with digital signatures.

Viel Glück!

Don't even think of using the "elster" system unless you have absolutely nothing odd about your tax situation. I'm convinced this is just a ruse to get more tax revenue for the government by trying to con people into thinking they don't need a Steuerberater.

Last year, because I thought that having given up a self-employed business on the side my tax situation might be simple enough to do without the Steuerberater in future, I worked out my Tax using the Lexware "Taxman" S/W, which is supposed to be one of the better ones. The difference between what came out there and what the Steuerberater got us back, was 1200€! I'll be staying with my Steuerberater (and also repeating the experiment, just in case) even though I won't be ale to set off his bill this time!

I always find the best method to calculate my tax is to find a German colleague, flutter my eyelashes at him,
casually mention that I really should do my taxes... but complicated... blah, blah, listen whilst he tells me about the latest software he has just purchased (very important to look interested and make the right appreciative noises), turn down his offer... mention that it's too complicated and not fair on him, let him insist, and then finally acquiesce. Bingo, taxes all done and no headache biggrin.gif

Careful!! This is no ruse. After gradually phasing out paper based systems, employers (and I count among them) now MUST do returns to the Finanzamt ONLINE. Elster is the officially recommended software for Lohnsteuer, Umsatzsteuer(voranmeldungen) and more.

Perhaps you should make the distinction between private tax returns and employer tax returns. Employers are using Elster (or their accountants). Over time the paper systems for private returns will be phased out - all part of the latest push towards eGovernment!

I am in the process of looking for a job and since I come from outside Euroland ( and I'm also new to Germany) I'm finding it hard to know what to ask for salarywise. I know that there is a site where you specify in which state you live, if married or not, church tax or not etc. and it gives you a rough figure of what you will get net after taxes etc. Does any one here know the name of this site??

Thanks in advance!

Steuerrechner from the Bundeministerium der Finanzen?

But I used the one posted here by brokenm to figure out how much I would have after health insurance is deducted, etc.
swefra
Super, thank you so much!I guess my search on this site wasn't clever enough biggrin.gif

I think I might be underselling myself... my boyfriend is no help at all with suggestions for what salary level that might be appropriate, just keeps saying that he can't give me any advice since we have different professions, experience etc...
Elfenstar
well, what do you do?
swefra
I'm in logistics, university degree, 3 years of work exp. ... In my previous pos. I was account manager for an online site(like amazon.com but scandinavian and they had outsourced everything except their own site to my employer)... I put 35K/year for this job... and they called me and want to meet for an interview... but that salary is to low... so stupid of me... I hope we can negotiate... even though I want a job I know how it is to work when you you think you are seriously underpaid...

oh yeah, that is way too low. you live in FFM, one of the most expensive cities in Germany! try to find your job or something similar here. i'm thinking logistics is in the business area, but where, i don't know. i'm guessing you sold yourself 5-10k short.
swefra
yes exactly what I think, lacks 5-10K...
but I was a bit confused by the discussions about earning 3900/ month to "qualify" for private krankenversicherung... because 3900*13= 50700 which is good salary in mind and a bit above what I can expect so I don't know... sold myself short... I am so confused these days...

thanks for the link and discussing this with me

I have searched within various threads but I just cannot seem to find the name of this site. You type in salary, Bundesland, Kirchensteuer (ja/nein) and some other things that might influence your net income. Does anyone what site/sites I mean?

Please feel free to merge!

Sweet!

That was exactly the one I was looking for, could not come up with the name thought even if the name is easy enough!

Thank you so much!!! biggrin.gif

Thank you Schumi77 but the first is a bit simpler to use ( but that is just my opinion).

Another question I thought that you were not eligible for privat health insurance unless you had a salary of + 58000 €/year, the nettolohn. de -thing suggested I should get private health insurance but my income will be a bit under 58000 €...

Do not kill me, I will search other threads for response to second question.

Didsbury's D... thank you, very helpful indeed, I will check out the other site you posted later and do some thinking!
Didsbury's Daftest
For more information just do a search for insurance on the top right of this page. You'll find plenty to read there... tongue.gif
swefra
Ah yes "Search". I will, it just hat I thought I was not eligible for private... well well there you go!
Hutcho
You've over the threshold, but you still won't be able to go private unless you've paid into the public system for 3 years. There is a thread on this already, which you'll find if you search.
swefra
aha... thank you then I will not bother my pretty little head with this for a while then, good, one less thing to fix, investigate etc.
