I am coming to Munich to learn a bit of German for 3 months. I want to use my phone abroad and it will accept new sim cards. Is there a good pay as you go deal for just a sim card? I don't plan to call the UK on it - except to get someone to call me back so just one that I can use to phone other mobiles in Munich. Also where is the best place to buy them?

Im no expert but I walked off Marienplatz train station smack bang into vodaphone. Walked inside and the english speaking guy behind the counter sold me a sim card straight away. Cost 40 euro with 15 euro credit on it for the simcard (which i thought was a bit of a rip off but oh well). Not sure how to recharge it but i just keep walking back into the same vodaphone and getting a 15 or 25 euro top up. Ask them to switch on the english help number thingo so when you call up the help line it is in english. That helps. What doesnt help is my drunken text messaging and phone calls to people in australia that i really shouldnt be calling... gone thru 65 euro in less than 4 weeks... ouch.

I've got a Vodafone CallYa Basic card - it's not particularly cheap to use though

http://www.vodafone.de/preise_tarife/cally...rife/26720.html

Basically, it's €0.39 per minute to call fixed line telephones, and €0.69 to call mobiles, €0.19 to send an SMS.

Mind you, looking at this

it doesn't seem to bad.

You can set the voice menus to English with a bit of trial and error too.

I got my card in Hamburg Haubtbahnhof, but you should be able to get one from anywhere that sells mobiles.

Funny thing is, I'm sure I paid €25 for mine.

And before you ask, it's not like when you buy a suspiciously cheap mobile in London, and it still has some yuppie's hand attached to it.

Ooh maybe i paid 25 euro and then got 15 euro credit. Then I bought another 25 euro card on that... so that made 40 euro credit.. oops. sozz. told you im not that reliable.
