Does anybody know if there are any claciers around munich where you can go skiing / snowboarding which have snow in October / November? If so are they easily reachable from Munich or are they a hassle to get out to?
Cheers,

It's possible to snowboard on the
Zugspitze in Garmisch, which is about 90 minutes from Munich and within Germany. Look here:
http://www.zugspitze.de/zugspitze/index_en.phpOtherwise the closest glaciers to Munich which I know are open are at
Stubaital and
Hintertux.

I'm going on saturday with the sportscheck bus to stubaier glacier in austria.I think tickets for the bus and skipass cost about €59.To buy a ticket you have to go to the sportscheck reiseburo on the 6th floor at
SportScheck in town. The bus leaves from donnersbergebrücke at 6am sat/sun.Another good website for details over these bus trips is

SportScheck are organizing day trips out to the aforementioned Stubaitaler Gletscher in Austria starting tomorrow (Wed) thru Sunday if you're interested in getting a head start to the season. 49/59 euros for the bustrip, skipass, and lots of equipment to test. Check out my post

i spent last sunday snowboarding at
http://www.hintertuxergletscher.at ...went for the weather which was unbelievable ..a little wind above 3200 metres, no clouds, deep blue sky and pure sunshine ...snow was acceptable as in there was snow ..not raw glacier ice ...and for boarding it softened up nicely in the afternoon. of course, no off-piste runs and morning time was mega-busy with ski-teams and the like practicing their thing ...still, was good for doing a few runs and sinking a few lagers on the sonnenterasse, then doing a few runs again ...took us approximately 2 and a quarter hours to drive there

I've checked out a few towns for skiing this weekend, but the earliest resort I know about doesn't open until Sunday. Ellmau opens ski lifts on Sunday 27th and has good snow reports for the Wilderkaiser, which you can access via a train.
Does anyone know anywhere close to Munich that is already open, or that opens on Saturday?

Winklmoosalm is looking to open this weekend, it's about 1.5 hours drive from Munich. According to Spiegel-Online
"Schnee und Mehr" they have 70 cm of new snow on the mountains and 50 cm in the valley.

Was on Hintertux at the weekend ...not quite what it was at roughly this time last year but enough coverage actually on the top of the glacier to have a few decent runs down to the base of the upper drag lifts. Place was fairly packed due to this and weather was very spring like ...roll on the snow !!

Is it ok for a beginner to go snowboarding on the glaciers...or is it better to wait for more snow ?
I have boarded once before for 5 days in Australia...but I don't think this accounts for much !

i would wait for more snow if i was you ...more options depending on how you take to it. by this i mean different steepness of slopes due to resorts being fully open, ones that are less crowded, etc, etc
the glaciers don't tend to have places for absolute beginners to learn although there are some ski/snowboarding schools that find little spots up there. at this time of year, there's a lot of national ski teams practising their thang in these places...
EDIT ...oooooops, just spotted you're not an absolute beginner ...in which case my advice would be to wait for more snow coverage in the next month or so. Hintertux for example has only the top part of the glacier covered, so it's a bit crowded at the weekend ..once they've opened the whole of the glacier up, it may be worth checking out. Same goes for other places like Kaprun, Stubai and so on.

Glaciers can sometimes be pretty good for people that aren't completely beginner, but are still not very good cause they tend to be very wide and often not too steep.
Doesn't look to bad up there, I would have expected worse with how hot the summer and autumn has been. I think I'm going to wait until the first big dump though.

Every year a load of us meet up beginning of Dec for a weekend skiing & chaos. This year we're going to St. Anton. It's a lads only jobby & it's w/end of the 9/10th Dec. This year is the 10th Anniversary & as ususal there's lads coming over from Blighty & Sweden so if you wanna come out to play you know where we'll be. St. Anton normally has early snow & with the Mooserwirt & Krazy Kangaroo apres ski bars on the nursery slopes it'll be a goodum.
