Hard and heavy music venues

Hi folks.

My name is MajorBummer. I came to Munich 11 months ago and haven't gone dancing once. My taste in music is very much on the hard and heavy side and I like dancing very much. Where can I go in Munich? I don't like dressing up or being in a place populated mostly by teens. Is there anywhere you could recommend going? I read the thread on the Atomic Cafe and I am not sure whether I'd enjoy going there if they are that strict on the dress code. Thanks, MajorB

Backstage is great, I've had an absolute blast every time I went.

They offer 3 or 4 different rooms in which they play a variety of "hard" music. Can't imagine there being a dress code either.

Let me know if you want to go sometime I'm always up for it.

p.s. I took a guy who's just relocated from Berlin, and who was complaining that Munich has nothing, to S7 on Saturday night and he couldn't stop saying how great it was and that he was definitely going to take his girlfriend there.

What kind of music do they play there? You know my taste..

Substanz on Poccistrasse is also very good.. not too "hard," but very good rock music that's fun to dance to, like The Strokes, the Cure, the Clash, the Stones, Led Zeppelin.. stuff like that.

Well, it's not Sepultura or death metal or anything like that. They played solid rock most of the time although there was some old and new school punk, reggae. It was the crowd I liked. Very down-to-earth.

And if not UA, I'm certainly up for a threes... oh wait. Wrong section.

There's (or used to be) a heavy metal place down Marktstr. in Schwabing called Amok, but you're going to find it a bit tough to dance there.

I dunno.. I'm kinda stuck in the 80s. I like all the newer rock stuff, but I can't tell you who sings what, which is sad, because i'm usually good with music trivia.

BTW.. anyone heard of Bloc Party? I really like the songs I've heard, but I think that is just the worst name for a band.

Well you must admit, six feet under is a very good name for a death metal band.

From what I can tell, mainly Norwegians, Icelanders and some Germans. While there's occasionally a decent riff buried in a track or two, death metal mostly consists of screaming unintelligibly into a microphone and posing for pictures in lots of black clothing and eye make-up, with extra points for holding various medieval weapons.

Ah. Then I already had a death metal band as the warm-up band to a band I went to see in Berlin. These guys are funny.

You are thinking of black metal, which is rather monotonous in my opinion.
But listen to Bands like Nile, Cryptopsy, Dillinger Escape Plan (ok, not really DM), Cephalic Carnage, SYL and tell me they are not incredibly talented. Of course, I am biased

Sorry MB, I thought you were into death metal or any metal for that matter. Sepultura to me is heavy metal. I suppose metal is a fairly wide concept.

Having said that, Schwabinger 7 also played Paranoid. I rate any place that either plays that or Thunderstruck. Two of my favourite club numbers. Temple Bar also plays fairly okay music, but I find the atmosphere fairly aggressive and I hate Kultfabrik or whatever it's called these days. Too many kids running around.

Black metal, speed metal, heavy metal, death metal, it all sounds rubbish to me. Who said we have to have the same music taste though!?

Umm, correct me if I'm wrong, but Pearl Jam is grunge. Perhaps you wanted to say Nirvana?

No man, I wanted to say Pearl Jam and that Pearl Jam is nothing but good old fashioned rock. Sepultura, S.O.A.D, Smashing Pumpkins and the like are hard rock - metal. Not grunge or death metal imvho.

NFW, Pearl Jam is grange and Sepultura is metal. Metallica is sometimes hard rock, most of the time metal. But PJ is definitely grunge, not hard rock.

I'm with MB on this one, Pearl Jam is rock (not hard rock).

EDIT: doesn't make any difference really, classifications are stupid anyway (see other thread ).

To be more precise, grunge is typified by an extended usage of alternative tunings which is what Pearl Jam used a lot. You can hear grunge from a mile off. Hard rock, on the other hand, is typified by guitarits strongly influenced by blues. It's basically high-octane blues to use another term used to describe it. Typical hard rock bands would therefore be Led Zeppelin, ACDC and Guns 'n Roses. I would use rock to describe something more in the line of old Bryan Adams or Alanis Morrissette.

Well, if you don't want to be surrounded by teens then Backstage is definitely NOT the place for you! I have never been myself but every Thursday I see a steady stream of teens heading to Backstage!! Definitely no dress code and probably your type of music though.

I thought you played the guitar? Alternative tunings are when you change the tuning of your strings from the standard tuning. Dropped D means you tune the E down a tone eg. Grunge alt tunings a lot.

No.. these two belong in the Canadian Crap category.. rock is a very vague term, you're right, but these two do not encompass any side of rock.

i googled Extreme Noise Terror and found this classification of their music. all i can remember is that they had a 4 second long 'song' of, well, extreme noise terror.

Yep. Pearl Jam is rock. Some of their songs lean towards hard rock and some towards alternative...but on the average they are a rock band to me. Since they come from the Nirvana/Soundgarten Seattle era they sometimes get lumped into grunge/alternative which in fact they aren't.

I agree that Bryan Adams is horrible. (sorry hahnsen) 'Summer of 69' is a decent song though...but it played way too much over here so I'm getting sick of it. Alanis is alright...average. I have Jagged Little Pill on mp3 and listen to it occasionally.

Playing an occasional AC/DC tune does not a rock bar make. I've been in country bars that take a "rock break" every few hours to play "normal music".

Pearl Jam is rock.
Sepultura is not death metal.
Bryan Adams sucks.

Go down to Titanic City in Schwabing on a Saturday night. Adult heavy weirdos. Zero teenagers. All the fun of the fair. Seriously, give it a try. There are usually live bands on Friday nights. Saturday nights are metal nights.

I second the Friday night option. Came home the next day with a sore neck!

Keller has quite a few kids who tend to get a bit aggressive. Was also pretty packed last time I was there.

I'd second that Ulysses. I still have a chipped tooth from an incident down The Keller.

Haven't been to The Keller for a while, I must admit.

And anyway, I don't get picked for fights much...
