A barrister friend of mine has promised to buy me lunch if I can crack this riddle - he can't do it either apparently, so neither of us has the answer so stop reading unless you want to spend your afternoon getting progressively more frustrated...but here's the riddle - any ideas???
QUOTE
The Riddle :-
I am 11 letters long.
My 1-2-3-4 is an insect
My 3-4-5 is a kind of food
My 5-6-7-8 is a heavenly body
If you mixed my 1-3-5-8 you'll get my 7-8-9-10
and my 9-10-11 is your best friend
Best of luck... you'll need it!

by the way, I figured that 9-10-11 might be "dog"...insect is perhaps "wasp" and the heavenly body a "star", leaving us with Waspstardog...which doesn't seem right somehow.

so SPS is a kind of food? I think you're right something seems a bit off.

What about Mars for the heavenly body?
Topsy
Oct 17 2005, 1:37 pm
the insect could be moth or flea
if you can think of a heavenly body that starts with a "t", then the kind of food could be "eat" if it's flea

What about Mars for the heavenly body?
waspmarsdog?
and spm as a type of food?
Topsy
Oct 17 2005, 1:40 pm
doesn't have to be "wasp", though, does it (see above)?
the heavenly body could also be moon...
Do you know for sure an answer exists Jimbo? I tried it out myself and then resorted to google and could only find a couple of instances of threads like this, people guessing but I didnt find an answer, and thats since 2001.

mothmoondog! lol
We are just gonna make up loads of new words aren't we

I have a sneaky feeling that is all this riddle is for. Especially seeing as there are references to it on the web from 2001 but no sign of any solution...

I don't think any words end in stardog or marsdog so think we're "barking" up the wrong path.
EDIT: except, didn't Keanu Reeves have a band called Doggstar?
yes, I'm lame

yeah, i don't think dog is right - dunno what else it could be, though

Is there a star called "Erin"?
Kinda falls over on the rest though.

"the" is french for "tea" - could that be it?
probably clutching at straws, though...

As I said, it doesn't stand up to the rest. But all suggestions are good as they might send someone in the right direction.

4 letter words insect:
gnat, worm, wasp, flea
3 letters type of food:
pie, egg, dry, hot, tea, pea,
4 letters heavenly body:
moon, star, wing, gate, tree (spiritual..?)
3 letters best friend:
pal, gal, dog, cat, pet

Oct 17 2005, 2:04 pm
Is there a heavenly body called erin? Sounds feasible (though google doesn't think so).. Then with some of the other suggestions above you could get...
Motherinlaw
The only hole still remaining would be " If you mixed my 1-3-5-8 you'll get my 7-8-9-10"
Mix m-t-e-n to get your i-n-l-a.
Damn
Edit: *completely missed Keydeck guess that ages ago, sorry*

tea is not food anyway, it is a drink. Unless you mean the mealtime "tea" but that is not translated as Thé in french, so yeah, probably clutching vanely at straws.

I'm still not convinced there is an answer.

Oct 17 2005, 2:35 pm
I'm not sure if there's an answer or not - it's possible that there's not an answer, and I've certainly been googling and whilst I've found reference to the riddle, I've obviously not found an answer...
Sorry...

Where did your friend get the riddle?

Another barrister apparently, and as you may or may not know, all barristers are bastards. I won't get the answer that way...

Oct 17 2005, 2:57 pm
I think you're barking up the wrong tree wrt "best friend". Read the question, it says "my 9-10-11 is your best friend"... Hence none of the suggestions really make sense. What is his/her XYZ is my best friend.
Jimbo
Oct 17 2005, 3:02 pm
But it's written from the point of view of the riddle, i.e. the 9th, 10th and 11th letters are the best friend of whatever the answer - so if the answer was 'George Bush' then the letters might be 'Tony Blair' if you see what I mean...

for one, I think this might be a viral marketing campaign. if the answer is something like "DrinkMoreOvaltine", then there will be a lot of upset people in TT.
also, I am convinced that the puzzel is based on British spelling and phrases / meanings, so I will give up. even so, my best guess (which is obviously wrong, but potentiall a cool sounding word) is:
antearsepal
Insect: ante
kind of food: tea
heavenly body: arse
if you mixed my: atae
you'll get my: sepa
best friend: pal
i always hated word games...
Tom17
Oct 17 2005, 3:12 pm
is ante the american spelling for ant or something?
Keydeck
Oct 17 2005, 3:13 pm
I've seen another version of it where it says "if you combine my" instead of "if you mixed my". The person rightly points out that this would mean that letters 1 and 7 are the same and that letters 3, 8 and 10 are the same.
The guy also claims that it is just one word. Well his exact words were "well it's really one word only..."
May or may not help.

Is the lawyer friend a blond female and perhaps uses the name "elle woods"?

"Elle Woods" was the character name of Reese Witherspoon in the pink & fluffy film 'Legally Blonde' ... do we detect a wind-up, or am I just looking for a potentially valid reason why I can't solve this riddle?
Jimbo
Oct 17 2005, 3:22 pm
I think you're clutching at straws - it's just a log-in. TTM did/does have an
Ellewood too. Doesn't mean the riddle isn't just BS though, as I'm starting to think it may be...

It doesn't actually say it's one word. It could easily be a series of words. If it's real in the first place.

I thought about it for awhile today. And I have now determined (after my own lame searches, and knowing the awsome google abilities of the TT community), the following:
if TT doesn't know it by now - it is probably not worth knowing.
