A couple of us are going for a gentle bike ride along the Isar on Sunday on our mountain bikes.

When I say gentle, I mean normally I like to try and be a nutter on my bike but will not be on Sunday cos of my knee. I do not plan on averaging over 20kmh, especially as I like to stop from time to time and look at interesting stuff along the way.

I plan on leaving as early as our bodies let us on the S1 to Freising with our bikes and pick up the river from there going north. The reason this is my route is because I have never gone further north along the Isar than Freising before so I just want to. I would hazard a guess that we will total about 40-60 km. This could change in either direction depending on my knee.

So anyone who wishes to to tag with a half-a-cripple who doesn't really know what the pace or duration will be is welcome. We can also split a partnerkarte between 5 of us for the train.

If we get our air container and we manage to pull off getting in to our apartment this weekend, Kera and I might really like to go. She's still very much an mtb novice. When we were in the English Garten last weekend she mentioned that the bike paths there were much more her speed right now.

50-60 km on a bike is no walk in the park for most people. If you haven't been on your bike in awhile, you're gonna have a sore ass after 20k.
Tom17
Thats why I said 40-60 and that it could go down smile.gif And I have been doing 30 a day this week cycling to work and its fine.

I shan't be in town this weekend but I'm still going to rain on your picnic wink.gif
I was in Freising last weekend and discovered that there were no S-Bahns running to and from there.
There are none this weekend either, you have to use a replacement bus service, which is pants if you want to take loads of bikes.

Damn! Thanks for the heads up Jeeves.

So S1/8 to the Besucherpark and take it from there then I guess.

MVV buses don't allow bikes at all afaik. Plus on my Isar ride last Saturday (64.5 kilometers, have I mentioned it? No sore ass either!) I found that lots of the Isarradweg was gesperrt because of flood damage. I didn't find any info on that online either. Does anyone know if the path you're going is right at water level? If it is you may have to find another way to go.
Tom17
OOPS!

I just went past the sign that originally inspired me to want to cycle this way and I realised I got it wrong. I do not want to cycle north along the Isar from Freising, but north along the Isar Kanal from Speichersee.

So my new plan for my gentle Sunday ride is to get the S2 out towards Erding (probably getting off a stop or two before there) then going up to the IsarKanal and follow it along until it re-joins the Isar. I do not know if there will be trails there ot not and quite frankly do not care. If there is no trail then its roads until we find the river again.

Wish i could go tearing up the south Isar trails and the Alps with the other MTB'ers this weekend but I just don't think its a good idea just yet with my knee :-(

weird reply to say the least.

Are you aware that some of the paths were ripped up during the Hochwasser last August. I've cycled south along the Isar from the center of town, and large parts of the path just aren't there anymore and have been closed off. I've no idea what it's like north of Munich, but I would expect some damage.

Ahem.

Anyhow, if they're going along the canal they should be fine, as the canal didn't get flooded. Or did it? And they'll be riding roads anyhow. If I didn't have a previous engagement at 16:00 I'd be going along, sigh...

I have a Munich Bike tour book that lists quite a few nice tours.
The very first one is a nice 29km Isar bike ride that starts in Neufahrn through Moos to Freising and back, hitting the Bräustüberl Wiehenstephan, Alter Wirt in Pulling, Mooswirt am See and others.
I'd be willing to go if you'll agree to a route that doesn't require a mountain bike (my routes don't).
Tom17
I have no idea how mountain-bikey the stuff will be. If there are eroded paths, that will be tough on your bike, but mostly I will only be expecting Isar trail type stuff which your bike should be fine on.

I am afraid I only have one mountain bike currently in action so you cannot borrow one, sorry :-(
Kat
Nevermind. I'm down with a cold now. Won't be doing anything athletic this weekend (including drinking with y'all). sad.gif
Tom17
Ok, I had changed my mind about this and was not going to bother. But now it is such a nice looking day, I am going after all.

I don't know of anyone defo coming, but if you want to come along, I will be at HBF S-Bahn for 11:00 and get the next S2 to Erding.
Tom17
Well it was just me in the end. Did 60km in about 3h30 mins.

Not the most exciting ride really, I got off the S2 at Poing and made my way to Speichersee (10km) where my desired route starts along the IsarKanal. Did about 15km along the kanal and got bored of so got off at a little dorf called Kempfing, just north of Moosinning. From there I just picked up the Erding road and did 30 odd km back home through Ismanning. The ride was mostly roads, the bits of Isar Kanal weg were just stoney paths, and very samey. Did a little bit of Isarraum close to home but it was too busy with cyclists and families really.

Maybe I will try this again, but start further along the kanal, and also give myself more time to complete. The kanal is MUCH longer than I realised, I did not even get as far as the next power station after Speichersee...
