Hey peeps! I am trying to make a mixed CD and I am having real problems with it. I am trying to copy single tracks onto my PC from several CDs and this doesn't seem to be working since I can't play the copied track without having the CD in the drive. The format of the songs are .cda formats. Does anyone know how I can get around this? I would really appreciate ANY help!
Can I use Nero to do this?

You can do this pretty easily with Microsoft Media Player but there are significant limitations to what you can encode to. I'd suggest using
Free CD-DA as it is the best ripper out there for Windows. Load the CD, click the FreeDB button (CD Database - automatically names the files for you), select the tracks you want, hit copy, select your output format (.cda, .mp3, .ogg, etc) and go.

Use
CDex. Even if your system has already auto-installed the Macrovision crap from a "protected" CD, CDex should be able to get around it. If not, you need to find that bordering-on-illegal Macrovision software install and rip it out of your system.

I used to use a program called Cool Edit, which I believe has now been bought by Adobe and is called Audition. Its not free though.

Unplug the PC and walk away.
No, ok, you'll find the location in the settings. I haven't used Free CD-DA but there should be an option in the menu which will show you the destination for ripped stuff. The other option is just to highlight your C:\ drive, hit F3 and do a search for the filename or *.mp3.
