Medical prescriptions in Germany

In the Munich forum I kind of introduced myself, but I am Mindy, an American who will be moving to Munich this summer for 9 months while my husband is on sabbatical at TUM. My question is about filling prescriptions in Germany. My husband is diabetic and will need to get his glucophage while he is there. I occasionally need Darvocet or Imitrex for migraines. As Darvocet is a narcotic and a highly controlled substance, will there be problems with me getting my prescription filled for that? Our doctors have said that they will give us prescriptions to take with us but I wasn't sure if they would be valid. Thoughts? Suggestions? TIA!

American prescriptions won't be valid here. However, if you get your doctor to provide a report of your condition and recommended medication, a local doctor (who speaks English - most can) should be able to provide a local prescription to suite your needs. Both Doctors visit and Prescription will be considered private treatment, so must be paid for on the spot. In most cases your US Health insurance will re-imburse these charges (but check before you leave!)

Good luck,

YorkshireLad,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I didn't reply sooner (been out of town). I will make sure I bring all of our medical records! Thanks again!!
