Saharan sand cloud over Munich

The sky is bright orange!!!

Got out of bed this morning and thought I'd woken up on Mars!

Red sky at night, shepherd's delight.
Red sky in the morning, shepherd's... pie.

What's going on? Is it just north Munich or is the whole city bathed in an erie orange colour?

And before anyone says, "Oh, it's the Föhn". No it is NOT the Föhn!!! Every time there is some kind of bizarre weather pattern in Munich the Bavarians always say, "oh, it's the Föhn". Like that is some kind of magic catchall explanation for any weird meteorological phenomenon.

Föhn is some kind of wind resonance, build up of negative ions as the hot air comes over the alps or something.

My guess is red saharan dust in the lower atmosphere.

Any ideas? Educated or otherwise?

so glad someone else thinks the sky is eerie today. I thought I was the only one freaked out by it. Twilight at noon is kinda creepy.

If this were Ohio in the springtime, I'd be gearing up for a tornado. Only time I've ever seen a sky like this.

Yeah, fantastic light, isn't it? The radio reports say that it's Saharan sand kicked up in the atmosphere from a large storm off the coast of Africa. If we're lucky, it might have an excellent alpenglow effect at dusk.

These guys came to my door asking me if I had a TV or a radio. I didn't answer.

Hey, I noticed this as well, but nobody believed me. Said I was imagining things. I think my friends are all colour blind.

Yes, from dawn until about 2pm this afternoon Munich Westend was bathed in orange light. It's cleared now.

I only really started to think about it when I booted up my computer and my Windows was bright blue. At first I thought my monitor was screwy. Then I decided that my eyes must have become accustomed to the ambient orange. My brain had turned the red filter up and the blue filter down. Made the blue windows look even more blue than usual. Kinda freaky.

A sandstorm, hey Randy? Cool. It must have been at high altitude though. There is no sand falling out of the sky. No Saharan lizards either. Although I did read about that in the Fortean Times once.

Just did an internet search. Yep, sandstorms in Tunisia - north Africa. 150 Km/h winds. Driven over the Alps by Föhn (sorry Lottie! dry.gif )

There are various reports on the internet about it blowing over Austria. Here's a report of it reaching Munich:

I was also wondering if it was necessary to get under some heavy pieces of furniture. Not thunderstorm season, but it sure was the right colour. Good, glad you all cleared that up, as I was wondering what the heck was going on.

Being the only person here that lived in OHIO (Go Bearcats!!!) I do believe it only looks like that during final exam week, not tornado season.
