Depends on what caused it, though there's frequently not much you can do anyway. If it's from a cold, decongestant and ibuprofen as well as a warm compress. If it's lasted more than a few days, see a doctor.

put peroxide in your ear, just under a capful. it can be done up to three times a day.
a heating pad and some tylenol should do the trick.

if you don't have a heating pad a hair dryer does the same just don't blow it right into your ear, cup your hand around your ear first.

good luck

From experience I would say go and see a doctor straight away and get the proper treatment. I had an ear infection two years ago and tried the over the counter remedies until the pain became unbearable.
I went to the doc's and was prescribed antibiotics but as I had left it too long I now suffer from Tinnitus (ringing in the ear) as the ear drum was damaged.

My Ma (former nurse's helper) used to pour heated salad oil down our ears (just a drop or so) and put a bit of cotton in if we had earaches in the night. It worked til she could get the antibiotics.

My mom did the exact same thing. If the pain was really bad she used a hair dryer as well. I then got banana or cherry flavoured penicillin (yummy).

I got the heated oil treatment as well, but you'll need someone to help you on it. Before going to bed, get the heated oil(not too hot, but warmer than your body temperature) poured down the ear canal and get your stopper in the form of a piece of cotton wool stuffed into it. Turn on your other side and repeat. In general heat is what you need.

My ear doctor in Berlin also told me to stuff a clove of garlic into my ear canal. Garlic is a natural disinfectant, so if you can stand the smell, give it a try. I am not joking.

Agree with the others, if this persists though after a few day, see a doctor. My condolences to you, my ears are my Achilles'heel, earache is much worse than toothache.. Get well soon!

god, i would go to the docs straight away, pronto
no way would i let anyone pour hot oil down my lugs ohmy.gif

lol, Topsy!!

as noted above, none of these "cures" are to be used for more than a day or two (lord knows how long turnip let it go). if it's still present after that, get your butt to a doctor. earaches are much more common in children than adults.

The hot oil(+- 38°) bit I got all the time as a kid. The heat kills the infection (apparently). As a kid I permanently had an ear infection. It hurts like hell when you get the stuff poured down your canal but after that you don't feel anything anymore. Next morning you find the cotton wool lumps on your pillow and the pillow case stained yellow from the oil. Yumm. I also wouldn't pour peroxide down my ear canals, first time I hear about that.

38 degrees will not kill any organism that is living in your body. It may offer temporary relief with a downside of deafness, but it won't kill anything. The best thing is to do some bloodletting. I know it will seem strange fro the unintiated, but it will help your ear pain. The key is have someone to help you. Get a large bore needle (16) is preferred. Use a small syringe to pull up a bit of heparin. Inject in arm (cubital fossa) vein, and twist off syringe. Only let enough blood out so you are only about to faint. This is where you need a friend, because it will take a few times to work out the exact flow rate vs time. If you faint first, have your friend pull out the needle.
Do this maximum three times a week until your ear feels better. It is a fact that the pain comes from inflammation (unless you have a pencil sticking out of your ear) and the inflamatory process works through the blood supply, therefore you are stopping the problem at its root

my god, bloodletting!?
you'll be telling us to stick leeches in our lugs next!

well it's either visit a physician, stick hot oil in your ear, have aglio e olio drain out of your ear onto some pasta or bloodletting. I would only use one of these myself, but he wanted help from a Munich Chat board

Effective treatment of experimental acute otitis media by application of volatile fluids into the ear canal.

Kristinsson KG, Magnusdottir AB, Petersen H, Hermansson A.

Department of Clinical Microbiology, Landspitali University Hospital, Reykjavik, Iceland. karl@landspitali.is

Essential oils are volatile and can have good antimicrobial activity. We compared the effects of oil of basil (Ocimum basilicum) and essential oil components (thymol, carvacrol, and salicylaldehyde) to those of a placebo when placed in the ear canal of rats with experimental acute otitis media caused by pneumococci or Haemophilus influenzae. Progress was monitored by otomicroscopic examination and middle ear cultures. The treatment with oil of basil or essential oil components cured or healed 56%-81% of rats infected with H. influenzae and 6%-75% of rats infected with pneumococci, compared with 5.6%-6% of rats in the placebo group. Essential oils or their components placed in the ear canal can provide effective treatment of acute otitis media.
