Seeing as Topsy has dragged up Cliff, Celine and Meat... sorry Mr. Loaf, and seeing I'm bored and my fingers are aching from endlessly practising variations on a 7/4 timing on the bass for the last hour, I thought 'Bollocks!', let's get some REAL music sorted out.
First of my favourite lyrics:
It's always raining over the border
There's been a plane crash out there
In the wheat fields they're picking up the pieces
We could a-go and look...
...and stare
I'll buy a beer for the first person who can name the artist, song and album.
Second is:
In the year of the scavenger, the season of the bitch
Sashay on the boardwalk, scurry to the ditch
Just another future song, lonely little kitsch
(there’s gonna be sorrow) try and wake up tomorrow
Damn, I wish I could write like that.
Last is easy. A song from one singer attacking another. Pure venom:
An imitation from New York
You’re made in Japan from cheese and chalk
You’re hippy tarts hero ’cos you put on a bad show
You put on a bad show. Oh! don’t it show
Still oh out on those pills. Oh! do you remember
Think it’s swell playing Max’s Kansas
You’re looking bored and you’re acting flash
With nothing in your gut you better keep yer mouth shut
You better keep yer mouth shut in a rut
Still oh out on those pills. Do the sambo
Four years on you still look the same
I think about time you changed your brain
You’re just a pile of shit, you’re coming to this
Ya poor little faggot you’re sealed with a kiss. Kiss me
Think it’s swell playing in Japan
When everybody knows Japan is a dishpan
You’re just a pile of shit, you’re coming to this
You poor little faggot, you’re sealed with a kiss
Still oh out on those pills, cheap thrills Anadins
Aspros anything you’re condemned to eternal bullshit
You’re sealed with a kiss. Kiss me
A kiss a kiss you’re sealed with a kiss
A looking for a kiss you’re coming to this
I wanna kiss anything. Oh! kiss this eh boy
Who is the singer and who is he singing about?
Shit! I love playin' this song.

Google can tell me anything:
Magazine
Feed the Enemy
Secondhand Daylight
This being one of the less embarrassing things I've done for a beer.

Edit: I need to think about this some more. I the meantime some great, GREAT nerd rock lyrics from Ben Folds:
Ben Folds "There's Always Someone Cooler Than You"
Smile...
Like you've got nothing to prove
No matter what you might do
There's always someone out there
Cooler than you
I know that's hard to believe
But there are people you meet
They're into something
That is to big to be expressed...
Through their clothes
And they'll put up
With all the poses you throw
And you won't even know
That they're not sizing you up
They know your ma fucked you up
Or maybe let you watch
Too much TV
But they'll still look in your eyes
To find the human inside
You know there's always something
In there to see
Beneath the veneer
Not everybody made the list this year
Have a beer
Make me feel tiny
If it makes you feel tall
But there's always someone
Cooler than you
Yeah, you're the shit
But you won't be it for long
Oh there's always someone
Cooler than you
Yeah, there's always someone
Cooler than you
Now that I've got the disease
In a way I'm relieved
'Cause I don't have to stress about it
Like you do
I might just get up and dance
Or buy some acid-washed pants
When you don't care
Then you've got nothing to lose
And I won't hesitate
'Cause every moment
Life is slipping away
S'okay
Make me feel tiny
If it makes you feel tall
But there's always someone
Cooler than you
Yeah, you're the shit
But you won't be it for long
Oh there's always someone
Cooler than you
Yeah, there's always someone
Cooler than you
Oh, there's always someone
Cooler than... you

10cc, "Rubber Bullets"
"We all have balls and brains,
But some have balls and chains
At the local hop at the local county jail."

Damn you Google! Damn you. I owe you a beer showem.
Nice lyrics btw DW.
Oh! And sarabyrd. I remember Rubber Bullets when it came out... but I was too young to understand it at the time (and Marc Bolan was taking preference).

Given some of the threads in the last few days a line from a song by Otis Lee Crenshaw sprang to mind:
"I called it walking, she called it stalking"

Not to mention just about anything by Bob Dylan from the 60's, language to get drunk on.

Batwings (A Limnal Hymn)
by Coil
(The key to joy is disobedience
There is no guilt and there is no shame)
A moon-piece to fetch up the golden cup
A snow-piece to avoid the great heat of the sun
Is kept in the night and by the light of the moon
An ice-piece so as they seem forever fallen
A night-piece of the dismal supper and strange entertainment
A rare chance-piece, a handsome piece of deformity
The skin of a snake bred out of the spinal marrow of a man
With stones and illegible inscriptions found about great ruins
Pictures of three remarkable steeples, or towers
Built purposely awry, so as they seem eternally tipping and falling
A transcendent perfume made of the richest odorates
Kept in a box of translucent scale
A glass of spirits made of ethereal salt, hermetically sealed up
Kept continually in quicksilver, of so volatile a nature
That it will scarcely endure the light
And therefore only shown in winter
Or by the light of a carbuncle, or a firefly
And batwings
And batwings
And batwings sing this limnal hymn
A wideness opening and closing to keep the darkness sealed within
To keep the darkness sealed within
To keep the darkness sealed within
To keep the darkness sealed within
A moon-piece to fetch up the golden cup

Damn you people I'm not gonna read half a page of text to get to one nugget - just post one verse or so max that tears your heart out.
MY favourite Pumpkins tune - Blank PAge
you were easy you are forgotten
you are the ways of my mistakes
I catch the rainfall
through the leaking roof
that you had left behind
you remind me
of that leak in my soul
the rain falls
my friends call
leaking rain on the phone
take a day palnt some trees
may they shade you from me

You can hear the bones humming
Singing like a puncture
Killed to keep the world turning
---
He says,
"Everything changes
And everyone dies."
And the night
slits her veins
and the darkness drains
and the void
rumbles in
like an underground train...
Forever comes closer
the world is in pain
we all must be shown
we must realise
that everyone changes
and everything dies.
---
Pay your respects to the vultures
For they are your future
Our fathers and mothers
Have failed to release us
Into the welcoming arms
Of the amethyst deceivers

Billy Bragg's version of Walk Away Renee
--
She said it was just a figment of speech
And I said, "You mean figure ?"
And she said, "No, figment"
Because she could never imagine it happening
But it did
When we first met I played the shy boy
And when she spoke to me for the first time
My nose began to bleed
She guessed the rest
The next day we went on a bus ride to the ferry
And when nobody came to collect our fares
Well, I knew then this was something special
I couldn’t stop thinking about her
And every time I switched on the radio
There was somebody else singing a song about the two of us
It was just like being on a fast ride at the funfair
The sort you wanna get off because it’s scary
And then as soon as you’re off
You wanna get straight back on again
But our love is strange
And you have to take the crunchy with the smooth I ‘spose
She began going out with Mr. Potato Head
It was when I saw her in the car park
With his coat around her shoulders that I realised
I went home and thought about the two of them together
Until the bath water went cold around me
I thought about her eyes and the curve of her breasts
And about the point where their bodies met
I confronted her about it
I said, "I’m the most illegible bachelor in town"
And she said, "Yea, that why I can never understand
Any of those silly letters you send me"
And then one day it happened
She cut ‘er hair and I stopped lovin’ ‘er

Great lines:
'Jesus died for somebody's sin's but not mine' --Patti Smith
'Paradise is exactly like where you are right now, only much, much better' --Laurie Anderson
'Divorce Song' or 'Soap Star Joe', both off Liz Phair's 'Exile in Guyville.
Or 'True Dreams of Wichita,' by Soul Coughing:
Signal got lost to the satellite
Got lost in the
Rideup to the
Plungedown;
Man sends the ray of the electric light
Sends the impulse
Through the air
Down to home
And you can stand
On the arms
Of the williamsburg bridge
Crying
Hey man, well this is babylon
And you can fire out on a bus
To the outside world
Down to louisiana
You can take her with you
I’ve seen the
Rains of the real world
Come forward on the plain
I’ve seen the kansas of your sweet little myth
You’ve never seen it, no,
I’m half sick on the drinks you mixed
Through your
True dreams
Of wichita
Brooklyn like a sea in the asphalt stalks
Push out dead air from a parking garage
Where you stand with the keys and your cool half silence
Where you grip her love like a driver’s liscense
I’ve seen you
Fire up the gas in the engine valves
I’ve seen your hand turn saintly on the radio dial
I’ve seen the airwaves
Pull your eyes towards heaven
Outside topeka in the phone lines
Her good teeth smile was winding down
Engine sputters ghosts out of gasoline fumes
They say you had it, but you sold it
You didn’t want it, no
I’m half drunk on static you transmit
Through your
True dreams
Of wichita
('Screenwriter's Blues' from the same Soul Coughing album also has some rockin' words...too many coming to mind too quickly...)

New York's about the New York Dolls, if I ain't too far mistaken, and I think specifically about David Johansen.

Not going to post a whole song, but this line from a Joni Mitchell song always stayed with me as probably quite true:
"...all romantics meet the same fate someday
Cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark cafe"
