In November, in the Amerika Haus, they are gonna stage the King Lear. Would really like to go with a native English speaker who loves Shakespeare to go with me. I am new to Shakespeare, but reading a book about him these days and really interested. Hope someone will reply... unsure.gif

Information as follows:

Play: King Lear
Place: Amerika Haus in Munich
Time: November 8th till 12th, 7:30pm
Address: Karolinenplatz 3, 80333, Munich

Ooh, I wouldn't mind seeing this. I studied King Lear at university, but I don't think I got as much as I could out of it. Maybe it's also a good suggestion for the book club?

Younvruer, pick a date and organise it and people will say they are interested and come with you.

Heaven help me, I think I may finally be interested in something at the Amerika Haus. Screening of Ran (one of my favorite movies and available from my DVD library) to follow?

Blow winds blow and crack your cheeks!
Topsy
i'd be keen, bit of culture, innit smile.gif

wouldn't be a bad idea to take a cushion, though, cos king lear is a bit of a long one
DDBug
Sure - when I'm at a conference. dry.gif
Yup - leave the 8th get back the 13th . grrrrrr.
Saan
I'd love to go . . . would also love to do King Lear with the book club, or pretty much any other Shakespeare.
Topsy
actually, isn't that an excellent idea?
we could all read king lear, chat about it, and then go see it
wouldn't that be just fab?
Eleanor_Rigby
Great idea, I would be up for this as well.

Read it way back when but could use a refresher.

Funny, I thought I had made that suggestion. Guess it takes a while for it to catch on...

This is would be great. German or English (they do do Shakespeare in German here - unimaginable, reminds me of reading hamlet in the original klingon)?

For film versions, skip Ran - boring - and see:

Korol Lir - Grigori Kozintsev - this has to be the best version. Soviet cinema is very underrated.
King Lear - Jean-Luc Godard - this has to be the worst version. Godard has his head so far up his own ass.

Them's fightin' words. Good thing we're not in Florida, or I'd respond with terminal force.

I have a a huge library of Kurosawa films. But Ran is not one of his best. A good film in comparison to Godard, but not as good as others...

Actually, I noticed your suggestion and was just expressing my interest in the idea. smile.gif
Topsy
i noticed it too, showem
i was agreeing with both you and saan that it was a fab idea smile.gif

God damn it...wish I could go...studied it hard, one of my faves, taught it to Aussie kids sitting the HSC, I could talk your bloody ears off...and don't even get me started re: the fool...

Maan...I think I need to go buy myself some beer...
Friday
This was one I studied as well, if I am free then I may go and see it. I will always regret not getting round to seeing Ian Holm performing it a few years ago in London to great acclaim.
Sin
Oh! I would love to come and see King Lear. Hope I am around at that time.

I never did understand that line huh.gif
Showem
Definition: die; die in a woman's lap. To experience a sexual orgasm.

And it's normally "I will die bravely, like a smug bridegroom.", isn't it?
Sin
Ah!

And... not in my book (what I just checked up in).

So... when are they gonna do me fav? Henry V.

I always had you figured for a "once more into her breeches dear friends" type of lad alright.

Hi, everyone, I am kinda surprised to see that there are so many people who are interested in seeing this. Regarding the organization:

A. Time: I would suggest November 11th or 12th, which are Friday or Saturday. I believe that is the time when most of the people are free so that we can go see it together. Maybe I should start a voting on the date. tongue.gif But of course, if some people want to watch it on other dates, please feel free to let me know.

B. Meeting place: I guess the easiest way is to meet in front of the Amerika Haus before the play.

C. Tickets: the entrance fee is 18 Euros, (students can get it at half price), if I remember it correctly. I still need to figure out how to buy the tickets, but maybe some of you know whether we can buy tickets onsite.

This is all for now, and any suggestion or comments are very welcome. See you soon. cool.gif

Just a little bump for this. It's now in the social calendar, so if anyone wants to organize they can 100% emphatically count on my participation.
nativeNYer
Who is staging this production? I ask because to me 18 Euro sound a little steep for a ticket to an amateur production? And I mean "amateur" in the truest sense of the word...not to offend those in the production or the Biz.

Is this in German or English? That would be "British English" that is.
Topsy
don't go, then, if you don't want to pay it - easy

i'm still keen
nativeNYer
@ Topsy...Thanks for your ahhh pointing out the obvious. I will certainly keep you in mind when I need to make my big decision on this.
Topsy
well, you're the one who couldn't figure out whether a performance at Amerika Haus of a Shakespeare play would be in "British English" or not...
if you think that qualifies you to be a smart arse, then go right ahead

i think that would "Shakespearean" English, anways, since I don't remember old WIll writing any plays in American.
Kat
I've seen a production of the Taming of the Shrew where some of the actors talked Cockney and they drove a VW bug, so there's no telling, really.
Topsy
true, Kat - I've also seen more than my fair share of bizarre stagings of Shakespeare plays
*rolls eyes skyward at the memory of a particularly painful Macbeth back in the 80's*

But if you search on the Amerika Haus site then you'll see it's a standard traditional production.

And heck, it's Germany. Who else is going to give you the English production?
Heffo
I have a spare ticket for Fri if anyone would like to join me ? Meet 7pm at AH.
Friday
it was a performance of unusual and memorable quality. Thanks to Maggie for organising.
Sin
I'm sorry I couldn't go. Babysitting duties changed my plans.

I hear some of the German translations of Shakespeare plays are really quite good. Iambic pentameter and all!

I thought the ADG production at AH was quite good. Liked the extra music, soundtrack-like effect. Lots of very talented people in that cast. Not to mention hard-working, geez. Seemed like nobody got to relax in the greenroom during that production; they were always playing the cello or drums or changing scenery when they weren't actually on stage. Kudos to all of them!
Gen
German translations are often easier to understand -- the classics are 19th century German as opposed to 17th century English.
