Looked it up on Leo and no result, but hinein = in, into and schnuppern = sniff, snuffle.
Any help?
Maybe sniff around, look into?

Cait, you are exactly right. It means to test or trial something. For example, one can do a "hineinschnuppern" course for scuba diving- its a little dive or lesson that you would do with the instructor before deciding to sign up for the full diving course...
As for work, it could mean a trial period for you or your employer at the company-to see how the working arrangement goes before a formal long term working contract is issued.
It could also pertain to a meeting you would have with management (to test eachother's waters, so to speak) before agreeing to employment.
Hope this helps!

means basically to check or try something out.
sometimes you can visit a class without actually having to sign up for it. that's also hineinschnuppern.
