Was out today, busting for the Loo went to BK not to eat of course and got shouted at by the guy after i came out of the toilet for not paying. I think it's a cheek, i mean after all, surely the toilet facilities should be refelcted in the price, right?
Does anybody know if these people are paid by the establishment, by an outside contractor and are just scamming for tips, or it's just the tips that keep them alive. Who pays for the cleaning stuff anyway?

For me it's simple, if the toilets are clean and well maintained then something between 20c & 50c depending on what comes out of my pocket. If they are not then nothing. In most places you are not obliged to pay anything to use the facilities, but if I'm happy with the service then I'll give something.
Cleanest toilets I've seen in Munich was in Ruen Thai on Kazmairstr. Top quality! Worst toilets I've been in were in Negroni.

At most restops you HAVE to pay. It's a turnstile and if you don't put a coin in then you can't enter. You get a ticket for the 50c entered which can be used against purchased in the associated shop. So in most cases you won't be losing out, but it does force you to make some sort of purchase. I generally save the tickets for the next time I actually want to buy something from them.
Noddy, yeah they're fcuking nasty alright. Floor usually completely awash!

sometimes a good well-earned dump is one of the most pleasurable things in life, especially in a nice spacious well-maintained dumping establishment.
worth at least 10c generally.

I've already paid too much for my food / beer or to get into the place (clubs), so I'll be damned if I'm paying somebody to wipe the floor once an hour.
Anyway in my experience toilets without those toilet "cleaners" are just as clean as those with.

I usually tip. If someone thinks standing in a toilet all day is an acceptable job, I say here's a few cents. Knock yourself out.
Couldn't get me to do it. UGH.

It depends really, Davek says he was just passing by and needed the toliet, in this case when I have not bought food I always try to throw something in, other than that I agree with you Big C, you pay enough for the food, so they should provide this service for free.

of course if i am in an establishment where i am already paying for goods and or services i don't pay, but if just stopping in, yeah i'll drop in 10c.

interesting dicussion, though
but please keep in mind: you don´t have to pay a tip to use a toilet!
I´ve read somewhere it´s something like a human right to use a toilet, and if someone denies the access, you technically could sue this person because of not respecting your human rights, as this is called coercion

I'll had arguments about this with pub landlords in England, and most of them say they do not have to provide toliet services to people off the street, only to people willing to spend money there.
So is this really law, that they have to let you use the toliet ? If so, is this generally for most countries ?

I just know it about Germany, it´s the same situation as in France with the free bread in restaurants.
This law was introduced during the de Gaulle era.
Plus, in Germany it´s not just you could ask at a pub to use the toilet without ordering food or something to drink, you could ask anyone you´d like to use there toilets.
But this is another topic (are you really willing to let a stranger use your bathroom?)

I was only really talking about places where I am drinking/eating/clubbing.

I remember a big flurry in the local papers about 3 years ago where this actually made it to court here in Munich. The decision from on high was that any establishment that serves you drinks has to let you use the bathroom, even if you come in off of the street. The cafe/wirtshaus owners were outraged, but the court said that while they did have definite expenses incurred by this service, they were also cornerstones of public establishment and were obliged to provide this service too.
So even though you have a theoretical right to use a restauraunt's bog, I think getting this to work for you depends on how swanky the place is. If it's sufficiently excludive, you can probably forget it.
Another point -- the cleaning/beggar people her can eke out livings because Germany is a shame-based as opposed to a conscience-based society...

It costs €.80 to take a Pinkel at the
Ostbahnhof
. For that price I thought laying some pipe right on the (skweaky clean) floor would be more appropriate...

So lets say I go to P1 or one of the other swanky establishments around and get refused entry, I tell them I just want to use their toilet. If they still refuse to let me in, I can take them to court...interesting...

Speaking of toilets, the bogs in Bondi are not bad, apart from the low ceiling above the urinals, but walking down the stairs to get to them it smells like a fcuking American tank. Summat should be done about that.
