Recommended packages & where to buy

Hi All,

Right. So I finally fixed my PC and rejuvenated my Palm Zire 71 (Palm OS v5.2.1) and now I'm looking for a English/German dictionary (SD card format) so that I can have a "live" searchable dictionary everywhere I go. smile.gif

Anyone has bought one before, and where to get them?

(A full search on TT came out with these great recommendations, but I'm hoping to just go to some shop and buy them.)

Oh, and any other recommended Palm OS software for making life here even better? smile.gif

Discussion on best foregin language dictionaries for Palm

I mainly use Ultralingua which has a nice interface and conjugation of every verb. I also use the PONS German/English dictionary through the Mobipocket reader, which is klugy, but a) more often gives a more connotative feel for word definitions, as well as examples, and cool.gif when reading German text (in Mobipocket reader), you can highlight a word and get an English definition.

I bought both dictionaries online.

The other Munich-related program I would recommend is EFAPalm which lets you track specific MVV departures and routes (which you have previously downloaded from
this site).

I can't find a proper link to the program at the moment. It's got to be somewhere on the site linked above, and I'm pretty sure I first read about it on Toytown. Here is a link to what may be an older version.

@drw - thanx for the info! Some more qns if you don't mind:
1) which website did you buy them from?
2) do they come in SD card format or has to be installed directly into the Palm memory

Cheers! cool.gif

I bought the Ultralingua German<->English dictionary through ultralingua.com.

The free version of the Mobipocket reader is at mobipocket.com.

The PONS dictionaries: German->English and English->German are separate purchases. I bought them from fictionwise.com, but they stopped selling them. You can buy them through mobipocket.com and probably other sites, too.

I don't think that any of these programs are sold on their own SD card, but in both cases, once you have downloaded them, the dictionary database files (~5MB each) can be installed on an SD card, though you have to know which directory to put them in. For example, see here.

I've been using SlovoEd from Palm Dictionaries
Free trial version available from the web site. I like the ability to add new / edit existing entries - other than that it's got a relatively simple interface and integrates into other apps on your palm.

Hi All,

Ultralingua
Thanks for the fantastic advice.
Downloaded Ultralingua trial for 10 days and will purchase it once that expires if feels good. Tried it a while ago, looks fantastic.

MVV Software
Also additionally, downloaded EFA Palm software from the MVV website and saved some important timetables to my Palm!

==> anyone managed to save more than one transport timetable for one station (e.g. from Hauptbanhof, I want to save both Tram & U-bahn schedule) - seems only one timetable is allowed for each stop.

Others?
Other than these two software & of course, the always useful Avantgo, any other recommended softwares? E.g. street maps, weather forecast, etc?

... not that there's any memory left on my Palm, but just getting excited with these softwares. biggrin.gif

Thanks y'all. tongue.gif

MVV: Having multiple routes from the same starting point works fine for the "Personalized Timetables" (Fahrt-Auskunft) for me. If you mean multiple departure timetables (Abfahrt-Monitor), I haven't tried that, but it should work. If not, you could use a timetable from the next station on the route.

Street maps: Take a look at Handmap and Mapopolis.

My main issue with both is that they lack any U-Bahn stop information. Tube, a subway maps program, was suggested to me, but I never tried it and instead wound up just entering Munich U-Bahn stop locations as landmarks in Mapopolis. It's kind of a kluge, but works well enough for me. If you want, I can send you the data.

Other - off-line browsing: I'm not so familiar with AvantGo, but Plucker is kind of an open source version of it and may be a nice complement. (In particular, it can download to your Palm most any web page.)
