A forum category for computer stuff

Do we need one? Can we have one?

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > Themes > Metachat

We all use computers to get here. We all have problems with them in one way or another. When we post our questions they often belong in Misc. because they don't particularly belong anywhere else. Sometimes 'Life in Germany' gets the prize because the question has to do with T-Online or hooking up your DSL while dealing with local phone companies.

While searching for 'eliminating unwanted startup programs in WinXP' and 'double checking for spyware' I came across this forum (that looks suspiciously familiar) that will answer my questions this time. A really informative site for those who delve deep into their computers or just want a quick answer.

Perhaps we don't need another category here and we could all just use this other forum (?) or maybe we want one for our convenience. Any thoughts? Takers?

Looking at that forum it's basically all about spyware. The computer related questions here are mostly small things (apart from the DSL connections) which usually can be solved quickly.
When I have a computer related question I post it on here rather than on another forum is because I know that in 99% of the cases I'll get an answer very quickly.
The thing is, there are not very many computer related questions in the misc. category. That might either because people can solve it by asking other people at home or in the office, or people don't want to post it because it has nothing to do with Munich whatsoever. If that's the fact, maybe a new category might save some frustrations, but I don't really see the need for it.
But like I said, it's convenient that the overall response on such questions is very quick!

True, true, and true. Looking at Life in Germany I find only a handful of references to computer related things, and in Misc. only a couple. I guess I could equally argue for a new category dealing with that penguin game since it keeps popping up as well.

...and here I thought that Editor Bob had written the code and been the architect/god of this forum. I still look up to him for all he does. tongue.gif

I know its been raised before... but... wouldn´t it be better if those type of questions could go into another section??? I mean, the majority of them are not Munich or Germany related... ph34r.gif Is that too hard to change?

I'd like to bring up this topic again. I like asking 'geek' questions here, because I know many of the people who will answer and the response time is fast and generally accurate. Not just that, but if I'm looking for hardware, people know the local markets, etc. etc.
So please, Editor Bob? Can we have a geek section?
Pas
Do we have to call it Geek? Nerd won't fly either.

People who use that term where I work have been know to get the worst service ever.

Oh, and the answer to why is it I can't get my WLAN working but a fixed line works is that you need to have the fixed IP address switched off. Took me a bleading age to work this one out.

Actually, when I posted my post this morning asking for recommendations on computer repair / call-out charges etc, I also posted my msg under "Misc" as I couldn't find an apt section to post it under.

So, yes Bob, any chance of having a new section along the lines ... "IT Help" or "Technical Issues" or something similar?

Cheers!

There is a difference young Skywalker. Geeks get things done, nerds don't.

A computer/geek section would be nice. I'll bet there is a large Geek-speaking community on tt. I've posted a geeky topic or two myself, but usually reluctantly (and always after searching elsewhere if it's a question that I'm posting), because i don't want to clog up 95% of the users new message lists with posts like Any web developers here using XAMPP on the Mac?.

It boils down to a finely-tunable set of filters; the better the new message filters, the more granular the conversation can be. Adding a computer/geek section would generate more traffic and participation for the forum, which would hopefully translate into increased amounts of advertising lucre for editor bob and his posse biggrin.gif

There is a large geek-speaking community on TT. I don't know the stats, but there seems to be a large percentage that work in IT, and the rest (obviously) spend a bit of time on the computer at least. There are bound to be issues to discuss, and the fact that this isn't a purely computer-related forum means that the neophytes can ask their questions without shame and get (quick) answers that aren't written in C++.
It can be called whatever you like. I just want a suitable place to post to for this kind of thing.

We already have Telecoms and TV. We could add PC to that.

Either way we need something!

But what if we want to talk Macs?
How about Telecoms, TV and Tech Talk. I could live with that.

Der Ring des Nerdilungen, perhaps.

there are other things that can fall into tech talk, and then you can subdivide that in the future if necessary.

ie, audiophiles, mechanics, etc...

Well Editor Bob said 'no' for now, as the topics are too non-Germany-specific, but he reserved the right to change his mind. So maybe if we keep nagging here for a while...? It's possible that if we keep pleading the case, he'll eventually come around to seeing it our way. happy.gif

I don't remember Editor Bob's obscene topic about Madelaine McKann Jokes being so German Specific? huh.gif
Kat
Was it? I avoided that topic, as it seemed certain to offend me.
