I was just wondering how high the prices for gasoline are in Germany right now. I live in Dallas (U.S.A.) and I've never seen the prices higher. $3.00 per gallon. for regular unleaded. I've heared some stories of price gouging, like in Atlanta somebody was charging $6.00 a gallon. How high is it there? Has it gone up in the last couple of days?? Just curious.

It's clearly school project night on Toytown tonight.
Yes, fuel price went up recently. Don't know fully about petrol as I use diesel myself but I think your basic unleaded is knocking in at about €1.30 per litre. You can do the conversion yourself.

Up 8 cents yesterday. Typical price now is €1.39/litre I'll leave it as a school exercise to convert that to $$$ and Gallons...

People in Germany are shelling out the equivalent of something around $6.60 a gallon for premium unleaded. In other words, quit complaining!

I heard from a foreign exchange student that gas was over five dollars in Germany. Is that true? I thought we had it bad in the states for three dollars a gallon.

Yes, it's somewhere on the order of $5/gallon.

A litre of super (95 octane) is currently around EUR 1.38 in town. Trend slightly downwards.

It's expensive in Canada as well (although the Brits would argue that...well the one Brit that I live with...we must remember Canadian dollars people...it's almost just paper in the end...). 1.30 per litre (or even more in some places). That is insanely high for them over there.
I filled up in Austria on Sunday (1.16 a liter) on my way down to Livigno, Italy which is some kind of tax free zone. Gas was .85/liter there!

Depends on which litter you are talking about. Sometimes you can get both for free.

You can find constantly updated statistics for petrol / gas / benzin prices at http://www.clever-tanken.de.Here's a
link with a Munich zip code already in it, just in case you're from out of town and looking for the info for Munich.

The price of petrol also has regional variation. It tends to be higher in places (like Munich) that don't have as many independent petrol stations so the multis tie up the market between them.

€1.58???
Gas was going for €1.35 a liter yesterday at Jet and even at some Aral stations. And Hamberger Großmarkt (cheapest place according to clevertanken.de) had it for something like €1.32.

this was the Shell by
Nordbad. and it was the most expensive one they had. I find its better in the long run for the sportier engine.

That must have been the 100-octane
Shell V-Power. I used to use nothing else, I was sure my car went better with it and even got higher mileage… but since I dropped using it a month or two ago and saved some 10c/litre, I can't really see any difference in performance/mileage. I'm now thinking that possibly there's a bit of a placebo effect involved here...

I don't drive so I couldn't care less. I do though want to express my sincere gratitude to all of you mugs out there subsidising this country's budget with about €50 every time you fill up your tanks. Somebody has to pay for everything and I'm glad it's not me.

i just had a look at some historical crude oil prices. the nominal average for 2005 was around 50 usd per barrel. now it's selling for around $115. i guess the gas prices haven't gone up quite as much as the oil price since this thread started, but the potential is kind of scary. what kind of cars are you people driving though? that sounds crazy. i can still fill my tank with regular unleaded from running on fumes to topping it off for around 45€ with gas around 1.50€ per litre and travel 700 km easily on that. it's a small car, but not that small.
The amount it costs to fill the tank is dependent on the tank size of course. The tank in my current Golf is 10 litres smaller than my previous Passat.
The important thing is HOW ECONOMICAL is the car (or rather the way you drive it) - which then influences how OFTEN you have to fill that tank....

that's because most of the price of fuel is made up of a fixed mineral oil tax which is not dependent on the price of crude. I believe only about 40% of the total price of fuel is actually the cost of the fuel itself.

Everything you buy, whether it's food or televisions is transported by road, which needs fuel, which means you are paying as well, just not so directly.

I don't drive (über anorak me

) but the cheapest fuel in Munich is generally at places like Metro or V-Markt where they aren't tied to a particular oil company.
It's Munich's relatively lack of independent fuel retailers that makes petrol dearer here than say Hamburg.

I filled up a couple of days ago in Slovenia for 1.12 a litre. It felt really good seeing the liter/euro amount being relatively close. Took some of the sting away from the 35 euro, 6 month minimum Vignette you are forced to buy when you drive there though. Cheating Slovinian bastards.
