Sunday roast pub lunch - Munich

Where to get one in Munich

UrbanAngel
Hi Everyone,

This is my first time here; I hope I'm posting in the right section and doing everything correctly, I wouldn't want to get a nasty e-mail from Editor Bob! (Thanks for the help validating my account btw).

Anyway, I was told by the lovely Katrina that somewhere in Munich did Sunday roasts, unfortunately I forgot the place's name, and looked at the websites for the Irish pubs but none of them mentioned it.

I know I could just ask katrina again, but I thought I'd see if there was more than one option.

And Katrina - can you guess who I am?

Awwww clearly you are a mentalist as I'm not lovely at all!
Ha ha ha! How the devil are you then?
Try the Victorian House, near back of the Viktualienmarkt heading towards Gärtnerplatz. I hear that they do a lovely one (but I get my mate Alan to make them as he does the best Yorkshire puddings in the world bar none), it isn't a pub though, more of a restaurant and they also own the Sconery in Fünf Höfe.

I thought Günther Murphys did a Sunday Roast, but it doesn't seem to be on their online menu. Maybe it's only on the daily menu on Sundays.

Malc's right - Günthers usually do a Sunday roast, but it's not quite EVERY Sunday, just most Sundays...never tried it though as I don't like pub Sunday lunches - often come out a bit dry.

Yeah, Gunther Murphys do Sunday roast from time to time. I went and tried it yesterday, though, and I wouldn´t recomend it!! Packet mash, Roast potatoes had not been parboiled first, no yorkshirepud, and the roast beef appeared to have been pan fried rather than roasted!!! It wasn´t cheap either!

I went to the Victorian House today but they said they don't have a sunday roast on the menu... they can arrange it if a large group goes and asks beforehand, otherwise it's a no-no.
Then went to the Sconery in the Fuenf-Hoefe-Passage and it wasn't great.. the scones were more like rock cakes and quite dry. the clotted cream was nice though!
Ah well.

Well... two years later and the Gunthers Sunday roast is even worse.

Normally we do a Sunday roast at home, but after having a party on the Sat, we decided to go to GM's for a change, watch the footy and have a Roast.

The sign said: Roast Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Roast potatoes, Grilled Vegetables and Stuffing...€9.95

This is what arrived.

This wasn't mine... I had already returned mine to the Kitchen as the Chicken was completly Charcoal burnt on the bottom and not edible. ( Should be noted in all fairness, that they replaced the chicken quickly with some tender chicken breasts which were fine )

Sunday raost was.
Roast Chicken => 2 Pan fried chicken breasts. Burnt on one side which the [s]Chef[/s] Cook tried to hide by turning them over.
Big pile of mash..
Roast Potatoes =>Crocket potatoes
Stuffing => Some sort of panfried bready stuff
Grilled Vegetables => Carrot Chunks which I can only guess were covered in oil and stuck in the bottom of the oven becase the were soft and mushy and starting to shrivel.

Bottom right of the photo is all the oil that was covering the food.

Real shame as normally the food is good in there, but yesterdays attempt of a roast, was a misrepresentation, insulting and GM's should be ashamed of themselves !

I descided to Name and Shame because although the waitress said they would pass my comments back to the chef, I doubt that it would make any difference. Someone who can burn food and try and hide it and feel comfortable about serving it to a customer won't give a damn about my comments.

Sorry Gunthers... Red Card

to be fair, it is in my opinion impossible for anywhere in munich to do a good roast or even better all you can eat carvery (oh god i would kill for that) without any pre booking taking place. its a bugger lot of work and expense just on the off chance that a couple of peeps turn up. doesnt excuse what looks like a sad plate of food though, but i think our expectations are like a bit higher than can be really quickly delivered. though a big slap for what are not roast potatoes...
UrbanAngel
Neither roast potatoes nor even roast chicken if it was fried.. the meal looks tasty enough but it was not what was advertised. Puts me off anyway! If they need pre-booking in order to make a roast, then they should say so, but they don't.

they might not want too, therefore do not offer the option. lot of hassel and time to do a roast for 12 people. if hazza had an oven i'd blackmail him to do so. mmm now i think i'll do a roast on satuday. at home. my yorkshires are impressive. if i had a camera i'd photograph them and post.
UrbanAngel
So if they don't want to offer the option of booking in advance, they should be able to provide the goods which they're advertising, surely?
gideon
would be helpful. but i'm sure they listen to customers and will correct such inaccuracies in their descriptions.

Meanwhile the scones have improved, or I went on an off-day the first couple of times.
