Bureaucracy for taking on a husband's name

Which institutions must be informed

As many of you know, I got married the week before last. Having returned from the UK, I'm now in the process of telling various institutions about my name change. I've done the bank, the health insurance, my employer - who else? The name change was dealt with by the Standesamt - have they then automatically informed the Einwohnermeldeamt for example? Or is this a typical case of german burocracy where nobody tells anybody anything unless they want money from you and I have to do it myself? And, as I said, more generally, who else needs to know?

Call the Standesamt.

I would check this...it is likely that is the case...but who knows. I had to go in and present the Trauschein but then I was married in Canada. I got a new Anmeldung with my married name. You might also need a new tax card in new name but don't quote me.

Bank and credit card companies, doctors and dentists you go to, landlord (perhaps if you are on the Mietvertrag), your place of employment, driver's license, any bills (SWM, Telekom) or cards (like Miles and More) in your name.

Don't forget to make the change on your post box.

Hi there...

Congratulations from me too smile.gif

I am also getting married in a month and my (future) wife will have to go through this as well when we come back to Munich..

So could you please tell me what you had to do to change your name here in Germany?

Standesamt and Einwohnermeldeamt ... don't say much to me.. I only know the place in Poccistr. biggrin.gif

thank you..

The Standesamt is where you would get married should you choose to do so in Munich. But your post sounds like you are doing this elsewhere (like I did) sooo...

The Einwohnermeldeamt in Munich proper is the Kreisverwaltungsreferat which is down at Poccistr.

First, I had to register the new name with the Burgerbüro (on the ground floor). This is where you get your Anmeldung and Lohnsteuerkarte. I had to produce the official Trauschein (marriage certificate). They would not accept the document provided at the ceremony. My marriage certificate took almost a year to get (blame Canada!) so I had to wait this long to make the name change.

Once the change is made in the computer, if you need to, proceed to the Auslanderbehorde (one floor up). Then you can get a new Aufenthaltserlaubnis (residence permit) if you need it. You go to the letter of your new name (example I changed from 'P' to 'F' so I had to get new paperwork from 'F').

If you need to change your name on your German driver's license, you need to take passport (showing married name), passport photo and 24 euros to the Kraftfahrzeugzulassungsstelle which is on Eichstätterstr. (near Westendstr.) and apply for the change. In 3 weeks (so they say) you will get a letter advising you to pick up the new license and exchange the old one in.

Hello, this thread seems to be most closely related to what I want to know. I'm getting married in the UK in just under 2 weeks. We will stay in the UK for about 2 weeks after the wedding, then very shortly after our return to Germany move from Ingolstadt to Hamburg. I plan to change my name, and thought it would be easier to register in Hamburg if I have my passport in my new name (rather than have to do stuff twice). I can't do the passport in advance because I need it in my current name to get to the UK in the first place. Does anyone have any advice/suggestions, been in the same situation? I think the best solution is for me to get my new passport during my stay in the UK, but don't know if that would be possible.
Thanks!

When I got married I did not change my name. Never seemed to be a problem. I just kept the old one!

Are you required to register foreign marrigages here too if non of the spouses are EU nationals?
