Free beer on the last day of the Oktoberfest

During the last hour, of the final day of Oktoberfest, do they give the beer away for free? I know they do this at the Volksfest in Stuttgart (9 October this year) but have never been at the Oktoberfest for final closing. Can anyone answer?

You can get free beer quite easily. Steal it, thats what the Italians will try and do anyway! Either your beer or your girlfriend.

But only until midday at which point most of the Italians are too drunk to drink anymore and are usually seen sleeping or staggering around and/or being sick.

I once had my beer stolen by 3 Italians sitting at my table. Needless to say, they were thrown out by security (after I told the waitress), but not until after the forked over 7€ for me to buy another beer. It was very funny!

You might not get free beer at the end of the fest but you can get it cheap. Those free vouchers that get given out by the companies can usually be bought off the recipients outside the tents on the last day. They are no use after the fest, well unless you take them to the place where the wirt usually conducts his business, restaurant, Gasthaus or whatever, so people are keen to get rid of them.

A couple of years ago I was in the Schottenhammel on one of the last couple of days of the fest. My friend and I ordered 2 helles masses. The waiter told us they were low on helles but there was plenty of weissbier left and offered to sell us 2 weissbiers at half price. Not bad but not free either.
