Do Germans hold events to celebrate this day?
Yes. They celebrate by closing all the shops, getting out of bed at midday and asking themselves, "What fucking Catholic holiday was this again?"

No, not really. Germans don't tend to do much of anything that might look too nationalistic. Which is a shame in a way. But, it's still a day off.

I thought on that day all the Wessies go out and find an Ossie to hug?

They get enough financial hugs as it is.

You should all rejoice over this holiday, for the simple reason that the weis'n is extended by an extra day!

yes but it would have been cheaper to have one day "freibier" on the wies'n for the last decade, and the next century.

What are the 4 countries that are net gainers from the EU?

An AWFUL bloody day, I do my utmost to be out of the country.
(Had to be here one year so hung a DDR flag off the balcony to annoy people)

Presumably you are referring to Ireland as being one of the four, although I'm sure there are now more than four. As far as I know we are now a net contributor but I'm sure you have some documentation on hand.

Precisely. Go shopping in Austria or the Czech Rep.

Did I really need to add
It would have been more accurate to say which contries WERE the
net gainers as there will now be a new budget for the 25 member EU.

Not at all. I took the reference as a joke/dig, but was actually curious as I thought we stopped getting wheelbarrow loads of cash a couple of years ago. Would genuinely like to see some figures on it.

The link in the above article gives 2003 figures for the 15, I don't know if there are later figures available. Ireland has a large agriculture sector so does well out of the CAP.
I suspect you right that Ireland has become a net contributor in the 25 member EU, especially since its economy has grown so fast other the past decade.

Basically, it is the one day in the year that politician do NOT think of which of the many holidays they can get rid of to pay for the costs of the reunification. Why not make it the 1st Sunday in October and everyone works on the 17th June (former West German national holiday) AND on 3rd October?
