stronzo, italian for asshole..
don_riina
@Big C

Stronzo is an italian swear word, meaing shit, or thereabouts.

@Aquascutum and Ketchup

You both implied that when Easter Europeans come over to Germany, then crime will come with them, even though there are strict regulations in place in Germany. So, think about it, that is saying that the Eastern European people are the one's at fault for all the crime in Eastern Europe. I disagree, I think Don makes a great point. It is not that the Eastern European people are more corrupt than others, its that there legal system is very weak and people can get away with more with less of a consequence. Cheb is a great example of how you are wrong. The problem there is that many of the crimes that are being committed are due to poor regulations/security. It should be noted though that the majority of lawbreakers in Cheb are Germans. So, maybe a better thing to initally say is that when Germans go to Easter Europe there will be more chance for corruption there, then to say that Easter Europeans will bring corruption with them.

On the IMEI issue, that will only work if the operator in question has IMEI blacklisting functionality incorporated into their systems. Many do not. Sure they can do it direct through the HLR but they won't unless it's part of the Customer Care system. Definitely it's a good idea to note your IMEI number, but it won't always do you any good.

On the Eastern European issue, I'm not ovely interested in getting into a discussion on the proliferation of crime in eastern europe as compared to western europe and how the incorporation of eastern countries into the EU may or may nor increase crime levels here in Munich. The simple point I was making was that implying that having more Eastern Europeans in Munich will create a crime tidal wave is basically a racist comment. Whether intended or not, saying "wait 'til the EU opens up the eastern front in may. then we'll see big time thieving in munich. fact." is a racist comment by virtue of the fact that it is associating a particular people (i.e. Eastern Eurpoeans) with a particular prejudice (i.e. being a tea leaf). The comment about the Irish and/or Scottish is not racist as the person said that they saw certain individuals hanging around looking dodgey. Granted that's to be expected in an Irish pub, but at least it's based on reality rather than just casting asparagus at an entire people. As for Polish jokes, Irish jokes, American jokes or whatever. That's a completely different situation. You were not making a joke, you were making a very real statement.

Nuff said, peace and joy to one and all.

If you ask nicely some of the barstaff will put a coat behind the bar for you - doubt they would want everybody doing it though. The other tip is just to keep an eye on it of course...that's always worked for me, and times I haven't I've been lucky...thought I lost one in Bondi once, but sure enough somebody had just moved it - from upstairs to downstairs mind you, which is quite a long way...
Katrina
You could buy a handbag? biggrin.gif
Big C
Oh yeah and leave it lying around to be stolen. Even easier to steal than a coat! I'm sure this is why most of my female friends have lost or had stolen their mobiles and purses many times and my male friends haven't. Pockets are practical and VERY useful. Eh Fusili?
fusilli
Hey watch it C you're arse is next. I'm gonna pick pocket you tomorrow night and sell it all on E-Bay..
michnic
fusili, if you registered when you moved here then perhaps you could get a copy of your passport at the Kreiseverwaltungsferat.

Better yet, I'm sure your employer has a copy on file. Try to get one before you go over to the embassy. And after that, keep a copy at home.

The only ID I regularly carry is my NY drivers license. If that's not enough for the polizei, then f*^% 'em. It's the most valuable item I have here and I'm not going to risk losing it. I've never been stopped for anything, but I've heard that the police will back down when challenged by an American. Hope I never have to find out.
fusilli
Great point Michnic...And my gym has a photo copy of it as well. Interesting..

jesus, do americans think that about everyone? wink.gif
Jimbo
In fairness if an entire nation state will back down, one jumped up little kraut in a green boiler suit shouldn't be a problem...
michnic
All but one of the eastern Europeans I've met have been breathtakingly racist so I'm not going to comment on the other topic flowing through this thread. dry.gif

disagree with you. the germans are there to take up the 'entertainment' which actually is provided by the locals...i go there quite alot myself.

I got pulled over on autobahn 7 TWICE in one night coming back from Holland, first time was by some "plain clothes" police, second was at a road block couple miles down the road at the exit.

Both cases, my US ID and a "I don't speak German" (even though I probably could have managed a bit if needed, but why volunteer), cut the traffic stop short both times, whatever the reason was they pulled me, didn't seem as important as having to deal with an english-only speaker.

The Plain clothes dudes still freaked me out a bit, wasn't sure what was up at first.

sorry way off topic, hope you get your stuff back Fusilli.

And Britain under Blair did what on the Gulf war issue? Backing down is more dignified wink.gif
Katrina
I have short-strap handbags so keep them on my shoulder tucked under my arm (as you will have seen at TTM Tuesdays).
I don't carry my passport unless necessary as I have a Government-issued ID document (Sonderausweis - due to my employer, actually I could use it as a passport), mind you I have never been checked for ID apart from at Customs.
Fusilli: you have enough problems as it is without "pickpocketing" C's arse. wink.gif Did your HR department photocopy your passport when you started your job?

noddy, I've only heard that from a few American men here in Munich and Hamburg. Hamburg's got a pretty nasty drug problem with a lot of the perpetrators from Africa and <ahem> eastern Europe, I'm sorry to say and it seems they think the average American here is only looking for beer and too stupid to be much trouble. At least, that's what I heard.

I'm fairly innocuous-looking so I've had no trouble--but even if I did, wouldn't be one to challenge authority with my citizenship. Wasn't brought up that way. smile.gif

One thread, starting with fusilli's jacket being stolen turned into a thread with four topics and almost a 1,000 views within a day:
  • What kind of ID are you having in your wallet?
  • Will the crime rate rise when the east european borders will open up?
  • Challenging Americans.
  • The actual topic about a stolen jacket.
Interesting...
fusilli
Yea it is pretty funny how long this thread is going. Ok new update. I have a photo copy of my passport as well as my german work permit, and all that shit...so this is a start...

found the opposite happens to englishmen.
fusilli
Now I just need to find the guys with my jacket, put their heads in a vice and have Cedric cut off their genitals...
Katrina
Well done. And how is your hangover? Drink some flat Coca-Cola, that will help (honest).
michnic
Sorry for yet another topic, but if you're hungover with any sort of regularity you should get some B-12 vitamins on hand. Take one before bed with a large glass of water and paracematol and you'll only be numb and tired instead of hurting the next day. wink.gif
fusilli
hangover is doing better. Lunch cured that..I forgot to drink water before bed last night. Usually chug 2 glasses before i go to bed. Works very well.
fusilli
lastly, AMERICANSTUD, I know you're bitter towards me so you stole my jacket last night...I'll find you... ph34r.gif
Big C
@fusili - who is this cedric guy? what a stupid name. honestly.
now Big C on the other hand...
Homer J.
Is there a Toytown record for thread that started the widest range of different topics? This thread could be the record holder.
Keydeck
Do you think the moderators will split this thread into it's 4 component parts?

Do you think the moderators should get paid for their sterling work?
michnic
I don't know if you're joking about this Americastud character, but if your not then maybe send him down to Marienplatz this Saturday with a big American flag draped around his shoulders. tongue.gif
Big C
I was expecting the editors to split this thread ages ago actually. Suprised they haven't. They have been quite "split happy" recently.
michnic
QUOTE

I hope they don't bother. It's in Misc. and Random Chat after all.
sparty
The time-consuming part of splitting the topic right now is that every post has to be categorized in either of the four new threads...
Jimbo

Indeed - me mentioning I had a hob to Don off topic in one thread has now led to me hosting a party for 546 people at my flat...

Not, I hasten to add, that I mind that, because I was gonna say something soon anyway...
Elfenstar
i was beginning to think we all had work to do. i mean, fusilli, was your jacket so cool or what? and i went shopping for one last night. at €90, didn't think that was much of a bargin. did yours have leopard pattern?
fusilli
Hey, my jacket was cooler than cool. Latest fashion in Munich. Pig skin, with the furry collar. ha, no actually I wanted a new one anyway so i could care less about the jacket. I just want the passport. I was trying to fill up my passport with stamps and was getting very close. Now i have to start over. sad.gif
fusilli
turns out someone else lost a jacket last night and another person got their laptop stolen...Next week we should use someone's jacket as a decoy and kick the shit out of the guy...
Jimbo
Jesus - somebody had a good night. I'm gonna try and put stuff behind the bar from now on... mad.gif
3 Lions
Right, this reminds me of one Tuesday night we were in GM's. We had left all our coats round the well and two guys walked in, looked at all the coats and just left. I would recognise them again.

Should also get an empty laptop case pad it out and weight it up.

Thieves are as predictable as they are stupid, they may stay away from GM's for a couple of weeks, but when there is a football match on the next time, that is when they would come back. The two guys I mentioned above, I reckon left because the place was empty.
Jimbo
Is this a problem in Günthers? I've not ever heard of it myself before, and never seen it happen, or even seen any shifty looking blokes (apart from the Bayern fans, but they all look like that). Be interested to know - I do know that some people are of the opinion that Neds has a problem - couldn't comment myself as I don't go down there...

Thoughts anybody??
fusilli
I think there's probably a guy who comes in once in a while, purposely doesn't dress shady or anything and is getting a taste for stealing from people that go to Murphy's. I mean it's a thiefs dream. A bunch of wasted people, many of which are tourists, therefore the thief doesn't have to worry about seeing many of the people again that he steals from.
Brummie
hey, one of the topics has gone already, wow they are impressive aren't they

@ Aqua: far be it from me to draw attention to inconsistency, but didn't you recently also argue that all property was theft and that the existence of private property justified heroin addicts stealing?
Hazza
About a year ago, I was there with a couple of German girls. One had her handbag stolen. I treat a few places more suspiciously in terms of theft. Murphy's is one place I look out for my things a lot more than I would in other places. I also don't trust The Shamrock or Kilians for not having stuff flogged. Maybe they could set up some kind of video surveillance as a deterrent. You'd only really need one camera situated near the door. It's pretty hard to hide a stolen jacket as you're leaving

surely if one were a thief you would just stick it on, pretend you are owner of said merchandise and walk casually out the door..with a sly grin and a pleasant auf wiederschauen to any potential apes on the door.

flogged?
wrong word hazza surely...swiped, pilfered, nick, tea leaf etc..
Hazza
I'm sure if your jacket is stolen, you could identify it on said video later and perhaps the perpetrator as well - even if he happens to be wearing it...
flogger
not if dodgy video/black&white

wouldnt stand up in court.
Hazza
Maybe not court, but certainly for kicking the shit out of...
