Deregistering when leaving Munich

How and where to do this

I have a Canadian colleague who is leaving Munich March 1 to live in India for our company.

What red tape does he have to complete to deregister or "abmelden" with the authorities here?
Elfenstar
you just go to the residence bureau (Einwohnermeldeamt) and say you need to pick up a form to deregister (Abmeldung). they fill it out that is it. not very painful.
noddy
you can usually downnload those type of forms on www.muenchen.de and fax them in, but they seem to be doing a lot of work on the site at the mo and some of the links are dead...

He has to abmeld within a week of his leaving date (otherwise a fine beckons).

The form he needs (as PDF).

Will he need to do a tax claim back?

tell him not to forget to cancel his health insurance if he does not want to keep it (will need to send the stamped copy of the deregistration to his provider to prove that he has left)
bubblylady
he also can claim the tax back, if he is not employed in germany anymore and of course if he has paid tax before and wasn't a free lancer.
That could be a lot of money as he is leaving withing the tax year.

What happens if it expired and you just leave?

What happens if it expired and you do deregister? Is there a fine? If so do you know how much? I think mine is about to expire or maybe did a few weeks ago.
Jimbo
and in addition to Beans' question - can you register or deregister on a Saturday???
Ketchup
Saturday?!?!??!?

You're lucky if you can find anyone in any "Amt" after 12:00 on Friday!
koala
Jimbo - you can't regsiter on a Saturday cos you have to go in person and they aren't open on Saturdays... but you can deregister by post - so you can do it any day you like.

When you deregister midway through the year, and you've paid taxes, how can you inform the German government where to send your 'Jahresmeldung' for that year?

For those who stay in Germany for less than 5 years, you can claim back your social insurance payments. The catch is you have to wait 2 years.

I have my 'Jahresmeldung' for the prior year, but this year's (2004) will arrive sometime in 2005. So how do I give them a foreign address? the Abmeldung form does not give you the option to give a foreign address (like its any of their business anyway!).

Don't think so...

The only place I found that would allow an/abmeldung online was SWM..

If you go HERE you can download the .PDF, print it, fill it out and mail it to the address at the bottom of the 1st page...
Schotte
thanks Darkknight.

if my permit only had oktober 2005 on it, do i even need to bother with this process though?
BadDoggie
Darkknight beat me to it. You can fill out the form on-line, then print it out and send it in. Better than printing it and filling it out by hand since it fills in all the replicated fields for you and stops you entering things incorrectly.

If you filled out an Anmeldung, you need to fill out an Abmeldung. Even though your permission was limited to a specific timeframe, they'll see you as still being there. It's rather unlikely they'll go after you for not filling it out but it takes all of a few minutes and if you come back (stranger things have happened), you'll have an easier time.

woof.
bucket06
yes, - especially if you ever come back to work in germany later on.
Schotte
quality responses thanks peeps.

going to try it now.

Has anyone experienced mailing in their Anmeldung from other country? If so, how long did it take for the hard copy to reach your new home address?

I went in to deregister 15 days before I was due to leave. They would not accept it as they could on do it 14 days before departure. So my wife and I had to trail back the following day to do it. He gave us a piece of paper and said I would need it to register when we got back to England. I took great delight in tearing it up in front of him. We left with him shouting you will never get back to England without it. They think the world is or should be like Germany.

Is that why you are still here?

I'm leaving Munich next week as my work placemant has finished. Do I need to de-register and do I need to take anything with me?
Cheers

laugh.gif German officialdom - Beautiful!

@wittyname: Probably best to follow all the rules and deregister correctly, to avoid having to untangle the bureaucratic mess that would arise if you leave without the proper formalities. If at some later date you want to return to Munich, and they find that you are effectively coming back before you have officially left, it could create a space-time anomaly that would tear apart the fabric of the German bureaucratic universe.
