@aquascutum:

time to grow up.

unless you had a direct part in Hitler's downfall or fired a shot in anger on a battlefield you are not in a position to comment on war.

the war is over. it ended in 1945. We are now at peace. We are supposed to have won. but then who has better living standards, Britain or Germany?
Jimbo
Don't think this thread or that comment should be taken too seriously to be honest - we could open a whole 'was the bombing right' debate, but I really think it's best we don't...
jeremy
stimmt Jimbo. Chill Jeremy.

We = Britain and Germany. Most Toytowners are Brits.

Whose? UK or Germany?

Unemployment - the definition of an unemployed person has been revised at least 20 times by governments, Labour and Tory (hate Thatcher) since 1979.

Pension system - btoh countries are heading for similar problems in future.

Over burdened health system - having had a babyin this country (not me my wife) I'd say Germany's health system is better.

definition has been standardised (ILO rule) and under this definition german rate is roughly double UK rate. claimant count (a different measure) is less than a million in the UK (out of a pop of roughly 60m) and german claimant count is over 4 million (out of a pop of roughly 80m). nuff said...

no. see graph (OECD projections). main (but not only) reason is UK state pension was linked to inflation yonks ago and was at a lower starting level in the first place, whereas german state pension is linked to earnings --> rises at almost double the rate.

it is useful to check your facts before making statements

Like that's been tested lately. Oh wait the Falklands... biggrin.gif
Jimbo
Since we're getting all nationalistic I would, as a point of interest, like to enquire as to the most recent 'war winner' in Europe... Surely got to be the Tommies in first place - with the continentals fighting over second place with the Irish and the Scandinavians bringing up the rear (tho Finland gave Russia a run for her money in 1940).

Silly question this one, but does Eire have a standing army? I've never seen one, so I'm guessing not - is that right???

yep. and looked what happened there.
22 years in the course of history is not a long time.

oh and the limp wrists have contributed to military personnel to
keep the peace in bosnia, macedonia, afghanistan and iraq.
not to mention sierra leone.

next.
MysteryMan
Nobody getting nationalistic: just 2 people trying to rise each other and probably only succeeding in rising other people.

A standing army? Naw they are mostly lying in pools of sick, like most Irish people.

Yes, there will always be room for limp wrists in the army. Who knows what would look attractive after 8 months in the gulf. wink.gif

I could not give a crap at who is the 'best' at winning wars.

Lets just all remember that the bloody Germans are the worst.

As you are so keen on history perhaps you would like to learn something.
German is fobidden by it's constitution (Grundgesetz from 23 May 1949) from entering into a "war of aggression" (Grundgesetz Article 26 part 1 and Article 87a). It is consitutionally able to defend itself upon attack but not to attack other nation states. Germany's participation within NATO and UN engagements does not form part of a war of agression.
You might also want to note Article 3(3) under which you are also bound by law to respect in Germany: "Niemand darf wegen seines Geschlechtes, seiner Abstammung, seiner Rasse, seiner Sprache, seiner Heimat und Herkunft, seines Glaubens, seiner religiösen oder politischen Anschauungen benachteiligt oder bevorzugt werden."
Would be nice if you remembered that before posting.
Have a nice evening,

britain has no such nonsense in it's constitution. siehe iraq fuer weitere info.
get britain to do the attacking. then germany can defend itself.
no one breaks the law.

never forget. treat everyone as equal.
as for article 3(3) i can see why it's in the constitution with their record.
i think when they wrote that they had the locals in mind. i could be wrong.
Katrina
You are local now. You live here. Best remember that.
Article 3 of the Grundgesetz enshrines the right to live free of racism.
That racism still exists doesn't make it any less illegal.
Before anyone comments on the free right of speech, well that is covered by Article 8. Article 3, however, takes priority in case law.

PS As for

the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has no formal constitution - it does have a constitution though. A search using the term "Iraq" returns 6 documents including an interesting speech entitled What is virtue? with interesting debate about morals.
