From Scottish Daily Express p18, August 15th.
QUOTE
Shops in Germany have been banned from selling Scotland's other national drink - because its ingredients are written on the cans in English.
Florian Schuck, who runs a threestorey emporium dedicated to British products in Nuremburg, has been fined £140 for stocking Irn Bru after a crackdown by food control inspectors.
...
He said: "They seem to have something against Irn Bru because they took a can away for inspection in 1996 and again in 2000. Both times, there was no complaint at all about the product.
"But they told me I was barred from selling it because the labelling for the ingredients was in English."
As it doesn't effect me anymore I can't say I'm bothered. seems stupid though.

Jesus. What a load of utter bollox. There are more than enough products on sale in Germany with ingredients in english only. The easy way round it is quite simple to put a sticker on the can with the ingredients in German. A lot of oriental produce does exactly the same...

I'd say it was pretty sensible (and probably a legal requirement) to have ingredients provided in local language. It's easy to do - all the importers need is a pre-printed sticker on each can. One of the filling station chains (Aral, I think) regularly has non-German products (mainly chocolate) on sale, at extortionate prices. Each bar has a small sticker with ingredients and importer details in German. I bought Tescos Digestives biscuits in Tescos outside Prague last week - they had a similar sticker (in Czech, of course!)

Without German stickers, how are you supposed to know when it's "mindestens haltbar bis"?
Got that label on M&M's, wasabi peas, all kinds of stuff. Irn Bru just needs to suck it up and buy a label applying machine for the massive German export market. Hell, I'll even do it a couple hours a night for free if they pay me in scotch whiskey on the side

Irn Bru is disgusting - the government is doing it in the country's best interests.
And who said the Germans have no taste?
Right... I'm now off to Berlin to lobby against bagpipes. Might as well catch them while they're on a roll eh?
Q. What's the definition of a Scottish gentleman?
A. A Scotsman that can play the bagpipes... but refrains.
Q. What's the definition of perfect pitch?
A. When you can throw the bagpipes into the rubbish bin without hitting the sides.

funny you should say this Sin. there was something on the other night about the highland clearances and the banning of the bagpipes and tartan after our last uprising... always makes me feel a bit bitter and dare i say racist towards our superiority complex neighbours with their 1966 warped and disillusioned little minds...but thats another topic...
big up Irn Bru... makes you strong it does!

I'm very tempted to point out that the ones raising the negative comments would appear to be non-Scots ("Yorkshire Lad" and "Jules ... " ) What do you know about Clyde Navigation ??

Some of my pals are coming over for Oktoberfest and the main requirement along with passport and beer tokens is the hangover cure : good old Irn Bru !! Cannae beat it !! Banned in Germany or not !!

Read again. I've said nothing against it, in fact I quite like the stuff, as non-alcoholic beverages go...And as for being "non-Scots", as you should well know, a Yorkshireman is simply a Scotsman with the generosity beaten out of him...

I'd say it was more stupid of Irn-bru not to stick the ingredients in German on it

Improperly labelled foodstuffs and Daily Express in wrong-end-of-stick "Bash the Krauts" shocker!
Though those stick on labels are annoying when they block off recipe ideas and stuff on the back of jars and packets.

@propellor head: If the ingredients are that easy why not melt the empty can and add sugar and
Isar water and call it B-Irn Bräu. (Not to be confused with Isarwasser which is beer, lemonade and Curacao)

Recipe Ideas??? "Fry meat, empty jar into pan and cook for a bit..." Oh yeah. Those stickers are depriving you of hundreds of "food in a jar" recipes...
