Farms to visit with the children

Where to take kids to see cows and other animals
Lori Landes
In Seattle we visited a kangaroo farm and now my almost three year old twins want to see cows. Does anyone know of a farm that we can visit with horses and cows. Cows being the more important animal to him. They also like to ride and have ridden shetland ponies in America. Can anyone make a suggestion?

THanks, Lori

The park in Poing is good for a day-trip, there's a thread about it somewhere around here. There are also holiday-farms, where a lot of people with kids spend their vacations. I don't know if they take day-visitors, but it might be worth asking. Here's the Farm Holidays in Bavaria site.

Thanks for those tips. We are actually going to Poing Tues. I don't remember cows there but maybe we didn't see everything. As for the other site it is wonderful. I was thinking that maybe we could stay at a farm on the way to legoland but I don't know what part of Bavaria that is and the website asks for that. Can you advise on this?
alala
Yeah, I don't think Poing had cows, actually, though I remember tons of chickens. For some reason. And I think there was something ruminant, though it wasn't exactly a cow.

Anyway. The site uses frames, so I can't point you right to it, but there is one horse-riding farm (with the little cow-picture, so maybe there are cows, and the English-flag-picture to the side) called the Spiegler Ranch, near Neu-Ulm, which is quite close to Legoland. If that's not your thing, then you'd best try the Allgäu-Bayerisch Schwaben part of the map, since those will be between Munich and Günzburg (Legoland), and so will make a good halfway stop.

Keep me posted. I'd be interested to hear what you settle on, and how it works out.

I have been here and have seen lots of kids riding little shetlands. You can take a horse out on your own too which is nice, or stay nearby.

Another great trip is to Herrmannsdorfer farm
http://www.herrmannsdorfer.de/

which is an organic farm where you can see the animals, I remember a lot of pigs biggrin.gif , and can go on a tour of the farm.

Hi Lori

If your kids want to see cows, then come visit us. We live "aufs land" and have cows grazing in a meadow directly across from our apartment. If you're intereseted, contact me. We can arrange a meeting.

Gut Kerschlach is a nice place to go. It's a big organic farm with lots of cows, horses, pigs, etc. There's a nice playground for the kids to play, with a little rabbit house next to it. Definitely a good place to take kids, and probablty about 45 minutes from Munich.

Thanks for the tip. We were going to try to go somewhere today with the kids but the weather stinks. We went to Lollihop instead. Lori

Jexhof farm museum offers a look into life at the turn of the 20th century but with buildings, such as the house itself, dating as far back as 1740. The house is amazing; you can wander through the rooms and get a taste of the rough life the farmers led, from the small bedrooms with five foot beds to the kitchens still stocked with ancient utensils.

The barns accommodate a vast array of farm equipment and machinery where the children (and young at heart) can clamber over, sit upon or even try out. One highlight is the “Wooden Cow where you can practice milking. Other buildings include a bakery, an apiary and tractor barn with not only tractors but old gigs, traps and coaches too.

There are roaming orchards and gardens and there is a modern building housing the biannual special folklore and regional history exhibitions which also has a small cafeteria. You can reach the farm with the S-Bahn S4 Schöngeising. There’s a signposted path and the walk is about 3 ½ miles through picturesque woodland and pasture. Alternatively you can also drive there. Jexhof Bauernhofmuseum, 82296 Schöngeising

I would suggest any farm which sells eggs or Honey. They almost always have cows also which if you ask they will almost certainly let you see.

Look for signs like "Eier zu verkaufen" (eggs) or "Honig aus eigener Imkerei" (honey)

We regularly buy these prioducts. What's more if you are at the farm at 5.30pm you can actually see the cows being milked and even buy fresh warm milk straight from the cow, as we do quite aften too. It's very cheap, about a Euro a litre. Did it yesterday. Mind you the Bavarian dialect is very hard to understand! But that's no problem as they are usually very laid back out there.

I forgot to mention.

There are two Freilichtmuseum I am aware of. One is near to Wolfratshausen and you can see old buildings and rural life in the oast. (Link anyone?)

There is another just opened this year at Schliersee by some famour German skier. Now that's a wonderfully precise nugget of info for you. If you want to I can get more details.

Another one worth a look: www.bergtierpark.de We haven't been here yet, but it looks like a great place to go.

Head to the country side. Tell some local yocal that you are a city slicker and that you want your kids to see some animals. You will be amazed at how much the farmers want to show you their animals. If you feel guilty, then stop by some place selling farm fresh produce. Buy something and then ask about seeing the animals.

The bergtierpark is nice. It is cheap and kiddy friendly and not crowded when I went there. Similar to the Poing Wildpark. Make it part of a trip out of the city.

just for fun, I'm gonna bump this...

we are looking for a farm where we can stay overnight (ie, B&B), and also have the chance to meet and see some animals, for the benefit of the kids. Thinking Upper Bravia and Austria... any other tips?

Thanks!
