Can anyone recommend a lung or pulmonology (lungen bronchialkunde pulmonologie) specialist in Munich ?
I am going to study at TU Munchen-Freising Weihenstephan in October and am arriving in October also. I need to book an appointment immediately because I get an asthma attack frequently and the doctor needs to monitor them for record purposes.

Can anyone please help ?

Thank you.

Will get back to you after the holidays, then I can ask my bosses.

Hi there,

Quite a coincidence ... my asthma has gotten much worse since being in München and I have been having some terrible attacks lately. Well, to cut the story short, I visited a great pnumologist/lung doctor yesterday in the Elisenhof Praxis (across the road from the Hauptbahnhof). It is actually a group of 4 Lung Doctors with all the right equipment and know-how (they even knew the brands of medication I had previously been taking in Australia).

Whilst I always speak German with Doctors, I'm sure they will speak English with you. The Doctor I saw yesterday works for an Australian company producing breathing devices etc.

I highly recommend him, and the rest of the team! (Being the first doctors in Munich to give me the right medication!)

Good luck :-)

Thank you very much for the information smile.gif
Now that you´ve told me your asthma got worse in Munich, my body almost immediately started feeling weak even before arriving there... sad.gif
I know that Frankfurt is warmer than other parts of Germany and my asthma felt better in a place near there.

But thanks again, I will immediately go to these lung doctors upon arriving in Munich.

Cheers !

I can recommend them too.

Now I feel better with 2 recommendations... thanks a lot guys !
Someone else told me that his chronic bronchitis got worse in Munich. Nice weather perhaps smile.gif)

Dr Baumann at Sendlinger Tor is brusque, thorough and I'm sure a drain on the health system where you can hardly get a prescription without his extra tests etc. He'd kill me if he knew I still smoke when I drink.

Pettenkoferstrasse 5 is the address I think.
PolarBear
Can Dr. Baumann speak English ?
My present asthma doctor in another part of Germany sounds like him too, except that she is a woman. Every prescription has to be argued and a visit to the clinic takes 3 hours due to the tests... arggghhhhh
MonksTown
I alwas had the male Dr baumann but his wife, also Dr Baumann is in the practice too.

We always spoke in German but he speaks good English as well.

Wit the €10 hassles about getting a referral and the fact that I found a spray that keeps my athsma under control 99% of the time that my regular doctir can prescribe I stopped going to him. Even getting a simple prescription could mens HOURS in there.

I have an appt with a chap called...

Now that´s a fine list we have here !

Grinner, any report on your asthma doctor ?

P.S. I never had asthma before I came to Germany. But I developed chronic bronchitis which led to occasional tightness of the chest when the weather keeps changing. When we travel to Italy or Spain or Asia, my asthma immediately disappears. I tested negative for allergies, but my asthma is confirmed after rigorous testing.

Did anyone else develop asthma only in Germany ?

There's a doctor's practise specialising in pneumology near Marienplatz (there's an advert for it on the placard on the U-Bahn platform):

Pneumologische Praxis Dr. Wassilis Tzimas
Burgstraße 7 - Eingang Altenhofstr.
80331 München

Tel: 089 - 486204
Fax: 089 - 482829

No idea if he speaks English.

Edit: Just noticed he's included in the list in the previous post...

Thanks...

I might add that the US consulate in Munich's website has a PDF document posted with a list of doctors by specialty, their training and level of English:

List of English speaking doctors
PolarBear
I read the list, but I didnt see any lung or pulmonology specialist. sad.gif
It is hard to describe medical symptoms in German, hence I´m waiting to read a post here that someone has seen a lung or pulmonologist expert who really speaks good English because some medicines need to monitored regularly.
Carm
actually the list of English speaking doctors is not correct, as you actually have to apply to the Consulate to be put on the list. And many good doctors out there don't know that! dry.gif

I've just moved to Riem and there is a an Arztpraxen on the Riem-arcarden with a pulmonology specialist the number is 089456890 but I don't know if they speak english...

I just got my krankenkasse and need a doctor as I just sprained my ankle lifting boxes into the new apartment, so a colleague will phone up for me and I'll find out...

@ Polar Bear- most specialist speak english! They have to as most books are in English, and, International conferences and Journals are all in English.

Or! this is a great chance to learn some German! Write down the words you need in English, and then look them up, or ask some of our translators here on the board. You are living after all in another country, and not everyone speaks English, and if you suffer from an illness, you should know the basics in that native language for your own safety.

I am willing to help you with the proper german words, and I am sure Eurovol (also in the medical field) would be willing to help you. I also know a med student here that is Canadian, I can ask her too.

Walter Weede is a great doctor. My girlfriend works there and my husband was there recently and got all tests done (he has an asthma) and he was more than satisfied with him

High recommandation

Well, one of the archangels is called Michael, so I suppose he's male...

On the subject of lung specialists, I can recommend Dr. Schnell. He speaks English, did part of his studies in England and even knew where Wales was (bonus!). He has been very good at monitoring my asthma and was happy with me doing lots of sports. The practice seems well equiped and they even did x-rays and allergy testing there.

Here are the details:
Dr. Med. Rudolf Schnell,
Pacellistrasse 2/ii
Pacellipassage
80333 München

Bron,

Your doctor is a good option too... thanks !

I have read this thread and there seems to be no real recommendation for a doctor (pulmonologist) who speaks English apart from Dr Schnell and his practice is closed for the next week or so. I have run out of meds and need a prescription urgently - can anyone recommend an English speaking pulmonologist?

Thanks
MonksTown
If you are on regular medication, any doctor can issue a new prescription.
Ring up ypur regular doctors sugery and the answering machine will tell you which doctor is covering their urgent issues while they are closed.

If you JUST need a repeat prescription, please go to your regular doctor as opposed to a specialist.
Not a personal dig at you, but running to a specialist everytime is one of the reasons the public health scheme is bankrupt.
Carm
its also holidays, so most offices are closed this week. Can you ask your pharmacy if they can give you the meds with your file on file with them?

No offence taken but I am new in Germany and need to establish a relationship with a specialist who can monitor my chronic ashtma, and recommend new/different meds seeing as some of my usual meds may not be available here. I have nonetheless made an appointment with the GP and hopefully they will be able to help. Thanks for the comments.
MonksTown
Once you are sttled on new meds, always get a big pack (commonly called N3) becasue it will save you and the kasse money.
And you can stock up so you "can't" run out over a holiday etc though you can ALWAYS get a prescription dispensed if you need it.
Note that not all Munich pharmacies have all medicines on the premises.
My athsma meds usually have to be picked up next day.
So do plan on getting your prescription filled at the last minute on the way to the airport for a two week holiday etc.

what meds do you take? In UK they would only give me the brown inhaler as well as the salbutamol.. now I get flutide which is much better and I hardly need the salbutamol now... was too expensive for UK health service though, but OK on my normal health insurance... result!
