The
Airbus A380 will
visit the airport
Munich in September 2006 for a test run. Boarding, taxi ways, de-icing, things like that.
Lufthansa wants to know how long things will take.
Munich airport was the first airport in the world to get the
A380 certification.

Really? Is there any opportunity to see it in action? Love flying and planes.
Just hang around the runway if you want to take some Pictures and watch the landing.

After the A340 disaster in Toronto, I think I will fly only on Boeing jets.
Small Town Boy
Aug 6 2005, 5:28 pm
You do that. Cos, like, you know, Boeing never have accidents, right?
::tuts in irritated manner::Anyway, what the do you mean "disaster"? Not a single person died. Hundreds get wiped out in car accidents each and every day.

Best not get on the sbahn to go to work either, I heard one de-railed once!
Once I heard this story of a girl who fell out of bed. Since then I only sleep on the floor.

Yeah but the floor can be dangerous during an earthquake as things might fall onto you.
Twirlie
Aug 7 2005, 8:01 pm
I sleep on the floor in a cave where nothing can fall on top of me.
It's still dangerous though because trolls also live in the cave.
I think I will only sleep outside from now on.
OUTSIDE?! Are you insane? An "A 380" could fall from the sky and smash you.

Apply a cigarette lighter on high setting to your nostrils every 15 minutes. It should keep you awake. Of course it also gets rid of those pesky overlong nosehairs. Killing two, uh oh, I mean solving two problems in one fell swoop.
(letting the lighter gas accumulate in your nostrils before igniting is also a great way to imitate a twin engined fighter plane on afterburner assisted takeoff, women love this)
Crawlie
Aug 8 2005, 12:27 pm
Oh jesus. So what if I fall asleep in an Airbus? I could stop breathing, fall out of my chair and the plane could crash into the S-bahn...
Oh crap...

Yeti
Aug 8 2005, 12:34 pm
If you're crossing the Atlantic Crawlie, I'ld recommend rowing. Every year a large number of peope do not die rowing across the pond. The main advantage is of course the fact that S-Bahns cannot swim.
Crawlie
Aug 8 2005, 12:37 pm
@Yeti. Fair enough. But what if I get tired? You are right though. Statistics do show that not many people die rowing across the Atlantic which is a bonus. In fact more people have died in Airbus's than in rowing boats.

Confirmation in the TZ yesterday that the A380 will indeed be landing and taking off at
Munich Airport on
Wednesday 28 March. It also has information on the scheduled arrival and departure, namely arriving at
12.30 and departing again at
17.30. I'm wondering if they'll announce which runway it will be using? The perimeter fence runs pretty close to the runways, so you'd get a great view of the plane if you knew which runway it was using, and from which direction it will be approaching. But this may depend on the weather.

QUOTE
The Airbus A380 is to demonstrate its quality and operational maturity under realistic conditions for the first time on a number of scheduled flights at the end of March 2007. As innovation partners, Lufthansa and Airbus will be subjecting the mammoth aircraft, certified last December, to over a week of practical testing as part of its so-called Commercial Route Proving. A real premiere en-route is the first landing of the A380 in the USA.
On Saturday, 17 March, the super jumbo, serial number 007, will arrive in Frankfurt from Toulouse and take off with a first contingent of about 500 guests on board from Frankfurt for New York on the following Monday. Up to Wednesday, 28 March, further stops on its flight plan will be Hong Kong and Washington. At the close of its route-proving, the A380 will also make a stopover in Munich.
“We are delighted at being alongside Airbus and supporting with our know-how and experience both the development and practice-proving exercise of this new aircraft type. The Airbus A380 as the new Lufthansa flagship will set new standards in economy and ecological efficiency, said Wolfgang Mayrhuber, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.
On board the Airbus A380 will be mostly Lufthansa and Airbus employees, whose job is to test the in-flight systems and equipment – from the air conditioning, the lighting, and acoustics, through to the galleys and new-generation in-flight entertainment systems. The flight deck will be manned by both Airbus test pilots and experienced Lufthansa pilots, while cabin service will be in the hands of Lufthansa flight attendants.
At its central hub in Frankfurt, Lufthansa will also take the opportunity to rigorously test the entire ground infrastructure for the A380. The airline intends, for example, to match the turnaround time of the new aircraft from landing to take-off with that of the much smaller long-haul jets already in operation.

Any update on this? Where near airport grounds can one easily go to see it? Think it will be worth a look from the observation hill or is there a better spot? I'm thinking of taking my visiting dad, but he won't want to walk the perimeter of the entire airport!
Small Town Boy
Mar 20 2007, 10:12 am
I can't find any more specific information I'm afraid. I'm guessing that the observation hill will either be overflowing and/or closed to the public. There are two runways, so I'll probably just go to the perimeter fence of the north runway (as it's more convenient for me) and hope for the best. 50% chance it uses that one! You'll still be able to see it land if it uses the other runway, but it would be some way off.
I know a few people who work at the airport, so I'll ask around; maybe they know more.

Mar 20 2007, 10:18 am
Or you can listen to an Airport radio/scanner.. They usual make ATC Contact long before they land which will give you time
to move to the correct runway. Munich Approach is on 128.020Mhz, Tower (North 121.975) (South 121.825)
Latley the A380's have been using the Callsign "XX Large", but there is no standard. It can be whatever the pilot wants/files

I'm definitely not going to see it. I saw enough of it last year, circling exactly over my house, very low and scarey trying dummy landings at Oberpfaffenhofen. I could read all the writing on the thing and it was sooo loud. Every 20 mins for 6 hours!!
