Can anyone recommend a legitimate website or service where I can download TV programs to view on the PC?
I'm particularly on the lookout for episodes of Frasier.

I very much doubt if there's anywhere where you can legally download TV programmes. To illegally download a TV programme, type "
Frasier bittorrent" into Google and away you go.

Try
UK Nova. It's not 100% legit, but it's has escaped being shut down for longer than other similar sites - so they're doing something right. Lots of good stuff on there. Including episodes of the new
Extras.

I regularly download Top Gear from a few different sites, tis no probs to find 90% of what you're after. Just takes a long time. Type in the name of your show with "torrent" at the end in Google and you'll have ample sites to choose from.
Spoke with a mate in NYC who knows a few things about computers and the law. He tells me that law firms working on behalf of the tv station/whomever will often send out a few thousand subpoenas saying that little Johnny so and so is being sued for suchandsuch and if the parents want to make it go away they can do so for the low low sum of $3,000 or whathaveyou.
Im in Germany and dont really care and dont plan on downloading 8 gigs of my fave US telly show from the net, but I thought thatthose of you who might, might not want to advertise the fact on an open board where people actually knowwhoyouare.

Whoops, what I really meant to say was, I regularly don't download Top Gear. Stupid German keyboards, always making mistakes.
BTW I don't live anywhere near

If you want to find tons of content, then 1sy get a real P2P program..
Shareaza is currently #1, and it conntes to all the P2P networks all from a single client. It Free Opensource so if your a programmer you can mod it as you see fit.
The downside of the P2P world is the Lawsuites, Shareaza can help with this by havine built-in support for blocklists (Updated Monthly).
If all this is still to much for you and you want to find/download stuff faster without the legal problems, then get a Usenet account and a decent newreader program such as NBPRO.. There are 100's of groups dealing with TV shows, movies,DVD's and MPG's... The monthly cost of a usenet account is usually around $20

I saw an ad stating that I could see Desparate Housewives over the internet. I went to the sight that was advertised on Channel 4 and there it stated you must live in the UK. I don't live in the UK therefore I can't receive it. Does anyone on TT know any sights where you can get U.S. programs via the internet. I am not knowledgeable on this and would like to have some feedback.

Your best bet is to download them via newsgroups (illegal) or BitTorrent (illegal) or with iTunes (perfectly legal but costs money).

You can also watch some US shows on the websites of the networks that show them. For example, I know that US residents can watch episodes of Lost on the ABC website. No idea about DH, though. As DrivinWest says though, you'll certainly be able to download them.

I've tried but they usually require a US IP address. You can spoof it but it's not terribly easy to do.

I've found a couple of online sites where you can watch tv shows for free. The only thing is you have to search alot and sometimes the show's name is changed. www.veoh.com, www.fanpop.com, and
www.dailymotion.com I've watched all the episodes of these two new show called Heroes, and Dexter.

Hi all,
Recent newcomers to Berlin, and we've found a few websites with episodes from the US but nothing substantial. We're also interested in German TV, as it should help with our comprehension. Any advice on a site with a variety of shows, say from The Office to Scrubs to 30 Rock? Thanks... oh and the website we've found is...

Hi all,
I recently discovered a private website that offers torrents of UK broadcast TV programs. The address is
www.thebox.bz.
The service is in principle free although it works on the basis of uploading as many programs as you download. For most expats, it is probably better to make a "donation". For €20 you receive a credit as if you had uploaded 30GB of viewing. If this seems a little confusing, take a look at the site and all will become clear.
So far I've found the (few) programs that I miss such as Location, Location, Location and Grand Designs. The files usually appear within in day or two or transmission in the UK.
I should stress, this is not an advert and I have no connection with the site other than as a user.
I hope you find it useful.

http://www.tvcatchup.com is free of charge. it is an online PVR but only FTV channels though, and you can only stream them but better than a poke in the eye and all that. And programmes are available to view as soon as they have completed recording. oh, and it is perfectly legal if you are resident in the UK and pay the licence fee.

You only need a UK IP address to set up the account, after that you can log in from anywhere. Either use a proxy or get a friend in the UK to sign up for you. I can sign uo from work as the IP address seems to be accepted.

Mr Nosey, please read my post. This is NOT and advert. I clearly stated that in the post.
The advantage of the thebox site is that it does not have the restrictions that affect most Video On Demand (VOD) services that require you to be resident in the UK. Services such as the BBC's and Channel 4 make it very difficult to use UK proxies and for most of us abroad this makes them useless.
Once again I hope others find the site as useful as I do.
Some of us pass on information for the benefit of others - not to make money!

Dear KT
Forgive me for being sceptical but I did read your post and a used-car salesman will also clearly say "one careful lady owner" but just because he stated it doesn't make it truthful.
I accept that you're not making a sales pitch for your own (or a friends) benefit but the way you worded it sounded a little too much on the 'gushy' side to me.

Feb 8 2008, 11:45 am
MrNosey,
A clear apology would have been nice, rather than an attempt to justify your dismissal of my post. If it appeared "Gushy", then that was because I was delighted to have finally found a source of UK TV after weeks of trying to find a way around Channel4OD and the BBC's player. Also, I found that simply googling for the shows was not working either (and yes I do understand why).
FYI, I'm not a used car salesman and earn more than enough not to need to try my hand at spamming.
This was my first (and last) post on Toytown. If you are typical of the readers then I want nothing more to do with the site.
Goodbye, I'm taking my football and "f--king" off home!

Ah KT, don't let one insult kick you off of Toytown. Didn't you spend some time reading posts before you tried posting yourself? Picking on others is the norm, not the exception here. Only thick-skinners need apply. For every doorknob that insults your post, a bunch of others will get some good out of your post. Hang in there

You are of course correct. Flouncing off like that was silly and childish of me.
In light of your wisdom and superior judgement, I have decided to redraft my original post.
So:
Hi all,

Hope it helps.

There is a much easier way to watch live British television.
It's exactly the same as watching it in England - I signed up months ago and it's been brill.
Try thetelly.net - they charge the same rate as I'd pay, well less actually, and it's really made me feel close to home.
Cheers
Silvie
