Where are they?

now that we have GP, we want to take a trip to a nice, big grocery store this weekend and fill her up. anyone know of some good ones in the area?
bee_sting
Take the U6 north to Kieferngarten and then a bus to either Real or Wal-Mart.

what is GP?
Jimbo
It's a car!!!

GP (for General Purpose) over time in the 40's became a Jeep...
Katrina
Wal-Mart. Everything you could possibly want (and can buy in normal shops in Germany) and quite cheap as well. The Euro Industrie Park one is probably nearest to you, it is past Münchner Freiheit and quite well signed but you can get a map off the website. Open til 8pm Mon-Sat.

They usually have a tiny US foods section too but don't get your hopes up, it doesn't have that much stuff.

Katrina
Showem
Or ask me nicely and I'll come with you to Metro, the wholesalers in EuroIndustry Park or on Leopoldstr. You need a card to get in the shop, which I have.
Katrina
Metro sells Heinz baked beans and tomato soup, Campbells soup (only mushroom or tomato) and Cheddar cheese.
And not at silly prices either.
Jimbo
Debz found me Cheddar in Tengelmann...
Katrina
Yes but these a bloody great big slabs of it for not much coinage. That's the difference. Because I am lazy/rich, I tend to buy it loose in Hertie/Kaufhof (the Dairy Crest one) though.
noddy
hmmm, cheddar cheeeeeessssseeeee... rolleyes.gif
Uncle Jamal
Cheddar in Tengelman??? Which Tengelmann?
mdfbayern
Heinz Baked Beans are also available in Real !! Which to my mind has a much better food selection than Wal-Mart !
Keydeck
Hellcat, when we fancied a big shopping outing it was generally Walmart we'd head for. You can combine it with a visit to MediaMarkt which is just across the road.

From where you are located, Metro is very close and Walmart is less than 5 minutes further.
Jimbo
Turkenstrasse - between the corners with Blütenstraße and Adalbertstraße. Tiny little branch but the lady in my life managed to find some Cheddar. Probably cost her an arm and a leg, but it was there, and is now in my fridge, half eaten - 40€ if you want it...
mdfbayern
Hmmm...€40 for a piece of half eaten Cheddar - I don't think so !
noddy
in the absence of cheddar, i have become seriously addicted to mini babybels... they sit in the top tray of my fridge door and every time i pass it i have to have a nibble... unsure.gif

...but they are soooo tasty...
Uncle Jamal
babybels? tasty??

Mein gott.

Get youself down to Elisebeth Platz and get some Beaufort from the best French Cheese Shop/Hut in Munich. Now that's a tasty cheese.
pepper
You can now buy Baked Beans in the the food section (cellar) of Karstadt on Kaufingerstrasse (between Marianplatz and Karlsplatz).

Cooked myself a jacket potato with melted chedder and poured over some baked beans yesterday. Hmm.. those students days ...
Hellcat
thanks for all the help!

wal-mart sounds like a good place to start.

@mdfbayern - where is Real?
mdfbayern
It is in EuroIndustrie Park as well - just at the other end of the road ! There is a Fresh fish market there as well - also Toys R Us and Staples
pepper
Yeah, there are two Walmarts in Munich, one in the south, next to Machtlfingerstrasse U-Bahn, and the other in EuroIndustriepark.
don_riina
Real is pretty good in general, but watch out for the absolute shite they sell under the description of fresh seafood at the back of the shop. Bought 2 kilos of mussles fro there, was given an insulated bag to carry them in (pretty good that!) but got home, and they were ALL dead. Not 1 live 'un amongst them. Now, you always expect a certain percentage of dead mussles/clams, but not all of them.
mdfbayern
You would have been better of in the Fresh fish market next door !!
don_riina
Damn right I would of - but I did not know about it until today.
Ta for the tip!

Wal-Mart next to Machtlfingerstrasse U-Bahn

Is it within walking distance?
michnic
There's cheddar in the Tengelmann at the corner of Schellingstr. and Luisenstr.

Okay. Sometimes there's cheddar.

But it can always be found in abundance and at reasonable prices at Viktualenmarkt (or however the hell you spell that unsure.gif )
sparty
@bex
Yes, from the west exit, you can't miss it.
Keydeck
Is that true Michnic? I went into a really smelly little cheese cabin there a few weeks back and it seemed that she didn't even know what Cheddar was. Where'd you find it.
walker1
most of the cheese place at Viktualmarkt sell chedder bar 1,
bad luck finding that one :-)

and it usually tastes better then the ones in the supermarkets!!!
bex
cheers sparty! biggrin.gif
Tallicame
I found a really nice Cheaddar cheese in Hertie at Haupt. It's called Cathedral Cheddar and it's pretty good, I think its around €2.50.
Keydeck
I used to buy proper Irish Cheddar in Edeka on Ganghoferstr, but invariably it used to go off after a day or two. Think it must have been old stock. I've also seen Irish cheddar in huge blocks for sale in the Tenglemanns (I think it is) downstairs in Oviesse (now Saturn) on Kaufingerstr.

Seems it available all over the place. I do prefer a nice hard cheese to the really soft crap.
PAFSHERRI
Second that on Cathedral City. I live in Pfaffenhofen. The only big grocery store here is Kaufland and they have Cathedral City. It's very good, even if it is a bit expensive. I use it in mexican cooking and it's wonderful.
Uncle Jamal
Ctahedral City is also available at Karstadt at Munchener freiheit sometimes. It's a bit plasticky but at least it's not orange.
canuck
OK enough about cheese. Back to WALMART! I shop at WALMART in Euroindustrie park sometimes and it's not too bad. Good selection of meat and yadda yadda yadda. OK The only thing I can't find there is good OJ. They sell this no-name crap orange juice there. Where is the good HighQ OJ at Walmart...I can never find it?
noddy
@ canuck...

in the getranke markt section, way around to the side they sell a huge range of juices...

i'm partial to the HOHES C stuff with fruchtfleisch i.e. orangey bits in...
Blimeygirl
Yeah...Hohes C apple and orange are great smile.gif

Walmart has great chicken, available in club pack size. Cheap too. More pasta sauces than you can shake a stick at...decent produce...yummy cheddar...fajita fixings available outside of a kit...and some North American product as mentioned.

It gets busy busy busy on Saturdays...recommend to go very early or very late. Open until 8 p.m. If taking U-Bahn...go to either Am Hart or Kieferngarten and then take a bus...there is a Walmart bus that goes directly to Walmart. Parking is...interesting. That area is crazy busy and lots of Einbahnstrasse.

Real is okay...after comparing the two...better shopping experience in Walmart...prices and variety.
Jimbo
I'm sorry but the Hohes C daddy is Carrot and orange juice - their Fruhstuck Saft - more Vitamin C than a whole orange grove...
maddigliana
Hello,

Just wondering if anyone knows a good Supermarket near Münchner Freiheit? Or ... is there a nearby supermarket that is easy to get to using public transport?

I need food before all the shops close! laugh.gif

Think there's a bus to the Euro Industrie Park where Wal Mart and Real are from Münchner Freiheit. .. don't ask me which number though...
kathie
If you get the bus number 85 to Ingolstädterstr, the mvv website reckons it's about 8 minutes walk (500m distance)
Izabella
maddi... i live @ MF and my favorite grocery stores are the miniMAL @ Hohenzollernstraße 30 and the Karstadt directly @ the MF u-bahn.
