Tips on where to see online television

Okay, I've had about as much Big Brother as I can stand here in Germany. So does anyone know any good TV stations for English-content on the web? With "good" I mean somewhat significant in scale and not Bob airing live out of his garage. Anything from the UK or U.S.?

I've heard that Comedy Central is available on the web but I haven't found anything on their site.

TVover.net has quite a nice and descriptive internet TV stations listing. There are a few channels that are pretty neat.

"America Free & Creative Commons TV provide Internet TV channels for Classic Movies, Sci-Fi, Comedy, Horror, Music Videos and Independent Films".

The website http://www.cybertelly.com gained a lot of attention a couple of months ago for their software, which allegedly enables TV streaming using BitTorrent technology.

Basically, anyone with a video card can transmit any of the TV stations they can receive in that location. Since it's P2P, you only need one person to transmit each channel for everyone in the network to be able to watch. Due to a temporary injunction by the German channel Premiere, they can't release the software at the moment.

I suppose it won't be long until TVOIP is up and running, but I'm getting impatient.

This is one of the best resources for watching TV on the web but as Purple Muffin says, the choice is not exactly overwhelming!

First, get a copy of this and run it: http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ (it's for your own protection)

Then get a copy of this: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

Then go here and select your program: http://www.mininova.org/

Though I don’t see much ‘East Enders’, maybe it’s not all that popular...

Deadcat - Good advice, especially the PG bit. There are loads of torrent sites still around - but they do change quite a lot so its hard to keep up. bitsoup.org is another good one.

I have a Sky dish over here, and I have no problem recording stuff onto my laptop to watch on trains etc. What I have got is an ATI graphics card in my home PC, which has a TV in connection, which comes out of my sky box. If I want to record something, I just play it on the sky box & record on the PC as an AVI using the software which came with the graphics card - I use an 'ATI All-in-Wonder' card which even comes with a remote controll for the whole PC.

Its a bit of a pain, as you have to leave the movie or program playing in real time to record it, so I usually let them play overnight.

Does anyone know if you can watch UK TV over the internet???

god i miss eastenders...
Victoria, I posted this reply to someone in another thread with a similar problem, I hope it helps:

I had the same problem when I moved to Berlin, I'm a die-hard Easties fan and I was in actual agony as days passed by and I didn't get my daily 'Walford-fix' so I nagged my husband to do something about it.

As we can not get a dish in our building 'cause our flat has no balcony, I had to make do with cable.
So if it is of any help to you, with cable you can get BBC PRIME where they show up to date 'Eastenders' and 1-year behind BBC programs. You can check here:

KABEL DEUTSCHLAND ENGLISH PACKAGE

Or she can always watch the daily updates in their official website to stay up to speed in the meantime, here:

EASTENDERS

Good Luck!

I use PPLIVE for getting the games, it's a P2P internet TV application... commentary is mostly in Chinese. The games are usually running a minute behind but the quality is good. If the game is on Radio 5 then you can pause it in Realplayer and wait for the video to catch up and sync them together! You need to set up your browser to go through a UK proxy for this.

I know this has been asked before, but a year or so ago I read an article in one of the Tech columns in the paper about a device that allows you via your broad band connection to send your TV signal to your computer anywhere in the world.

For example according to the article I could route my German cable conection to my inlaws in Canada who via their broadband connection could route it to the TV and watch the same TV that I watch here. The main problem they said was setting up the router wasn't for the faint of heart to set up, you need to know what your doing. What I was thinking was that if I could find out what the box was I could route my Sky plus to my computer to watch when I'm on the road.

The other thing I was wondering can you record programs to your hard drive via the Sky box. Its all digital it should just be a matter of some software and an S cable or something like that.

Is there not a TV card or something you can buy?

THM, i believe the device you are looking for is a "Slingbox" which is made by Slingmedia.

i think the web-site is http://www.slingmedia.com

Check out Toytown, there was a discussion on there recently about this.

It sounds a fantastic bit of kit, and as soon as they have sorted out the Sky+ remote codes I might get one.

VERY cool - just found it!

Sling Media's Slingbox

I see what you mean about the Sky codes though - well not in a hurry - we will have to wait or?

Have to keep each other posted on new developments ...

Discovered this a year ago but peeved me off that they don't have the big names channels and the Spanish option is very regional...but as a start it was good. It is fascinating watching some of the Chinese channels especially the news...

Now subscribed to www.jumptv.com...they have TVE (Television Espanol/Spain) international (so you can get Baila con quien!!) but other that again regional. The South American fair is very good. You pay around $19 dollar for 3 months for each channel and get access to some non-free channels with a good quality stream.

I am really looking forward to the day when internet TV comes of age...

I just downloaded the TVU player from www.viidoo.com. It works pretty good and it's free. You can get a live stream of about 30 stations around the world like: CBS, FOX, Comedy Central, Sky News, DW, France24, SpikeTV, Network Ten, a bunch of asian stations, and others.
