PC video out to TV video in

Is such a thing possible?

I meant to post this before but am pretty sure I haven't yet...so, sorry if I did post previously on the topic while drunk or something.

Is it possible to play a video file that is stored on my Windows PC to my television which sits across the room?

I have to assume it is b/c I'm pretty sure I have seen a long S-video cable in the store. My PC, however, does not have S-Video support (maybe I could buy a card?)

Any ideas? Quality will probably suck but I just want to watch Battlestar Galactica on the big screen you mother-frackers!

Thx,

Kit

Course it is. Most graphics cards these days have either s-video or composite video out. You might need an adaptor. You can even get rgb to s-video adaptors too but its probably cheaper to get a new card.

Depends on what sort of quality you want and how much you want to pay.
I am surprised you don't have S-Video or a Comp out, but if so you can either buy another graphics card Euro 50 - 200 with the right ports + a cable Euro 20 - 40 and have watchable video.
Or by a Scan converter Euro 130 - 5000 and have good quality video (depending on how much you spend).

But personally, if all I wanted to watch was Battlestar Galactica, I would by the DVD box collection and save some money.

Another thought.

You could transfer the file to MPEG 2, burn it on to discs and watch it on your DVD player

The current season 2 is out on DVD already?

I've got a DVD burner but it takes forever to burn a single hour episode of something so it's not worth it...i'd rather hit "play" on the PC and watch it on my monitor.

Thanks for the infos...I'll check out the various hardware out there and report back.

Its encoding it on the fly to whatever format you have chosen. On most TVs, VCD resolution is ample for playing back video files, SVCD will be better etc. Modern DVD players accept a few formats, and the file you have may already be in an acceptable format - Get some software called G-Spot Codec Information Applicance. It will tell you loads of shit about the format, codec, bitrate and what have you.

I did not even know Battlestar Galactica season 2 was out! Class

My DVD player supports VCD and SVCD...like I said, it just takes too long to burn shows to watch them on the TV. I've done it and it does look nice, however.

Battlestar season 2 is the business! Episode 3 was last week...

Nah it only takes a minute or two to burn a vcd or cd, maybe 5 minutes for a dvd. But it does tend to result in a flat full of cds and dvds! Thats why I just plug the TV in, well used to until something happened to the graphics card, now I just watch them on the computer which is fine cos it saves cable shuffling and the tv isnt much bigger than my monitor anyway.

Six months later replying to this...last month I bought an Nvidia PCI graphics card at Saturn for about 75 bucks along with an S-video and audio-out cable. After reconfiguring my living room so I could connect the 5 meter cable to the TV, I gots all my TV shows on the big screen...woot!

Now I just need to see if "Far Cry" will finally work on my desktop.
