The Auerdult is a market fair which takes place three times a year on Mariahilfplatz in the Au district of Munich. The Summer fair begins this coming Saturday - 30th July. For nine days the attractions include stalls selling antiques, crafts, and random junk; as well as fair ground rides, a beer garden, and various food stands.

Each of the three annual Auerdult fairs has a different name. These are:

Maidult - takes place every year during 1st week of May,
Jakobidult - 1st week of August,
Kirchweihdult - 3rd week of October.

Each of the fairs lasts for nine days, i.e. from Saturday through Sunday the following week.

The stalls are open 9am til 8pm. The rides from 10.30 am.

If you're thinking of going one evening, Friday 5th August would be the one to choose. There will be various special fire and light shows happening and it'll be open later than usual, i.e. til 11pm.

Curiously, on Monday 1st August you'll be able to pay for everything with Deutschmarks - if you still have any tucked away. The exchange rate will be exactly 2 DM to 1 Euro.

The Auerdult is best reached by the MVV public transport. Take the U1/2/7/8 to Fraunhoferstrasse or Kolumbusplatz. Or the tram 27 or bus lines 52 or 152.

And it's a big one this year. The Jakobidult (the name for the summer Auer Dult) will be 100 years old!

It is the Jakobidult (first weekend after 25th July - Jakobitag) so this year it is 30th July 'til 7th August 2005.

For years to come (from muenchen.de's Auer Dult page)

Whats tat? Sounds x-rated! blink.gif

Pots and pans, ceramics, candle holders etc that would cost you about €2 in Woolworths going for €50 at the Auer Dult cos it's supposedly hand crafted between the breats of fragrant Bavarian maidens.

hehee love that word 'tat'
I grew up in Blackpool Monksy, home to streets and streets of Tat-shops.
tat sells apparently, well at least to the average Blackpool holiday-maker. ph34r.gif

here's the official definition of tat:

I checked out the dult. Thought I'd be smart and avoid the crowds by going around 5ish. Smart wouldve been 6ish. I took the visiting 3.5 kid..thats years old, not absolute numbers of kids. Anyhoo, very crowded but still a nice time, games, rides, and as promised, chock full of tat. And then some. I nearly bought a fierce looking meat mallet for 2.50, double sided and everything, but really, Im just not that into beating my meat.

PS: for peeps with mini-peeps there are real pony rides, yes with real ponies, not the imaginary ones I'm always talking about. As a heads up, there is absolutely NO que for the pony rides, once the lady with the whip (grrr) says go, its whoever gets a pony first gets a ride. We waited several rounds stupidly hoping for some semblance of orderly politeness to settle in..nope...so be quick, grab your kid, your pony and go.

Nice review, thanks!

So you're not into beating your meat. But did you let anyone feed your pony?
