We moved to Munich a few months ago. Me, Wife and 2 kids (5 year and 1 year).
The last few months have been spent getting the house sorted out and settle in, but now they need to get out and meet other people before they drive me mad!
Can anyone suggest any meeting points for my other half and the kids? They do not speak any German, but she can drive/find her way around.
My eldest starts school in September so she will be ok then, but it is still a month away and she is bored. Plus my missus needs to speak to other adults before she losses it and the 2hr a day phone bill to the UK is killing me!!!
Can anyone recommend any groups/meeting points/clubs/beer gardens/lap dancing clubs (that one is for me

) where they can meet some English speaking people?

One thing you can do if you have DSL is reduce the phone bill dramatically.
All you need is a microphone and then download the software from
www.skype.comAs long as the person on the other end has DSL (although they claim it works with a modem) and a microphone then the calls cost absolutely nothing. Use it myself with mates in England and the quality is fantastic.

Or ring 01066 before dialing internationally.. I think it is like 3c a minute to call the UK.. with rates like that I don't bother with Skype..

I think that
Taufkirchen, Ottobrunn, Oberhaching,
Unterhaching and
Grünwald have the highest concentration of English speaking Ex-pats in the whole of Munich area..
Finding someone to talk to should be a breeze..
Find someone who works at EADS or NETMA and get them to place an advert for coffee mornings etc...
Shouldnt be too difficult.

We will start them after September when we have one of the little rugrats in school.

Just get her a PC and an internet connection then she can waste the rest of her life rambling away on chat forums like this. Hey - it works for me!
Bing****Bang
Jul 27 2005, 4:55 pm
PC is still in a box in the cellar

We have got the internet connection but I still have about 20 boxes to get through before I get to that 1.
Plus that won't help because my little girl will want to take over (5years) and my boy will eat the mouse (1year)!!!
They need to get outside. She has found Cocoloco (or whatever its called) and she has jsut called to say they have been to Wild park Poing (although she was on her way to Salzburg on the A8 because she had gotten off at the wrong exit!! Maybe my problems are solved because I am not sure if there is much fuel in the car so maybe they won't come back
Anyone for a party round mine tonight

They could go swimming at the Steinsee or Kirchsee.
That is if your wife manages to find her way off the A8, which will probably take absolutely ages, as traffic's absolutely horrible tonight.

You could offer to babysit while she goes to a TT event to recharge her batterries for busy kid-filled days.

Wow, thanks man, I just downloaded it and called our land-line number - no problem! Great tip, Skype crapped out on us soon after we installed it and we never got it sorted again ... you just made my day! ;-)

I use 01071 (then the full code - 00 44 etc.)
Just before you get through you here a German voice saying "nur ein comma acht cent pro minute" or 1.8 cents per minute!

This doesn't involve meeting people but it would be something fun for her and the kids. There's a nice zoo at
Thalkirchen. You can take a picnic, also.
Just keep watching the posts. I think I recall people with kids meet-ups. Or you can start a thread. There's tons of people on the board who have kids. Maybe suggest a BBQ or picnic in the
English Garden or along the
Isar. I'm sure you'd have plenty of interested folks.

There is getting to be quite a large group of English expats in and around Ottorunn.
We will have to organise a meet up at the
Rathaus Biergarten sometime as I think my missus needs some girl company too

why don't you just post here?
Choose a date a time and location and you are sorted.
Or get a babysitter and you both can come to one of the countless TT events.
Lots of english speaking babysitters here as well.

Hi Breeze
As Turnip says there are a few people who meet up at the Ottobrunn Biergarten. If the weather is half decent we usually turn up at about 4 -5 on a Friday afternoon.
@Turnip
Why does your missus need more girl company? From what I've seen (from your drinking ability) she gets plently of girl company with you. And if I find any of my Sky channels with Parental lock on them I will be round yours to dismantle your dish!!

Points to note:
Don't get drunk and go to bed while other people are in your house.

Tell your wife to check out Sticky Fingers (
www.stickyfingers-munich.com) to take the little one to once the older child is in school. It is an English Speaking Play Center. It was a lifesaver for me when I first moved getting to speak with other native speakers! First session is free!

if you dial 01030, it's 1.3 cents a minute. check
Teltarif.de. the website lists a comparison of (international call) price and the corresponding prefix.

VoiPBuster -
" There are several ways to make a free phone call with VoipBuster:
calls to other online VoipBuster users are - and will be - always free.
calls to any regular land line in one of our free destinations.
To counter the misuse of our network and to reserve capacity for our genuine testers, we have limited our Free-Calls policy to 1 minute per call. If you want to enjoy UNLIMITED free calls, just sign in and buy 1 euro worth of credit. "
Calls are rounded up to the next whole minute.
Worth keeping an eye on though ...

[COLOR=blue] The web site
www.tariftip.de changes usually on Fridays so always check for the latest prices on calls. It is very simple to use. I use it all the time. You need Deutsche Telekom, I believe some phone companies can not do this.
You put the prefix it says for the Country you are calling and they bill you on your normal phone bill. I call the USA for around 1.2 per minute and this includes taxes. We also use this system to call here in Germany.
You can use one of the translation such as Babel to translate until you get used to the set up.
I too am an working in Ottobrunn. I've been her for about 3 weeks and will be in Munich until October. I like to meet others in the area! - Shelie

We have just moved here too and my husband was worried about how huge our telephone bills would be to ring home, but if you dial 01026 from a German landline before you call home then it only costs 0.5 cent per min. I hope that helps ...
