Well, I have been enjoying the Music and Book Recommendation threads, thought we should have one for movies.

As for me, I would reccomend "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and "Requiem for a Dream" for those of you who haven't seen them.. And "Shaolin Soccer", which is one of the silliest, stupidiest movie ever biggrin.gif

Sheer class butterbean... so long as nobody spoils the ending for the uninitiated.
Jules Winnfield
Der Untergang is definitely the best one I've seen in a while...
MoiLV
The Breakfast Club
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion
Confessions of a Dangerous mind
Bamboozled
3 Lions
Still not seen Der Untergang, all the DVD stores just have the chepo version that doesnt have English subtitles, you have to buy the special edition for that.

Another good German film - Das Wunder von Bern.

Oh and while I am at it, also Shaolin Soccer. Funny as hell.

I was thinking about Das Wunder von Bern and Escape to Victory has just popped in my head, absolute classic.
MysteryMan
Just saw a german film from a few years back called Das Experiment which was I presume based on the Stanford prison experiment. Great entertainment.

Ri!

BEst movie in quite a while is "Open hearts"

Saw "Igby" at the weekend... it's ok... I always liked that chic with the teeth in it...forgotten her name now ... she's in "Saving Silverman" too... I definitely emphatised with wanting to kill Susan Sarandon (yeh like that singles me out...)

Then there's pupees russes ... sequel to "L'auberge espagnol"

Some others were saying earlier that "Lucia y el sexo" is great... it is

Have you checked in Hugendubbel on Marienplatz? That's where I got mine, subtitles and all...

I'm actually ordering it off of amazon.de for a friend of mine in the UK...

"The Butterfly Effect" was a very good movie I thought..

It makes you think, after seeing it.. you try to bring the pieces together..

Two more quality films:

Withnail and I
The Italian Job (original)
3 Lions
I've seen The Butterfly Effect - Hated it, mainly cos it has that complete and utter prick Ashton "I'm an absolute Knobstick and only famous cos I'm shagging Demi Moore" Kutcher in it.

Cant decide who I hate more as an actor him or Ben "I'm another Knobstick" Affleck.

Harold and Kumar go to White Castle smile.gif
3 Lions
@Xargon - laugh.gif Excellent Film!!

Harold: Did Doogie Howser just steal my fucking car?
Kumar: Yes... I think he did.
Harold: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Burger Shack Employee: Ding-dong! May I interject for a second? As a Burger Shack employee for the past three years, if there's one thing I've learned, it's that if you're craving White Castle, the burgers here just don't cut it. In fact, just thinking about those tender little White Castle burgers with those little, itty-bitty grilled onions that just explode in your mouth like flavor crystals every time you bite into one... just makes me want to burn this motherfucker down. Come on, Pookie, let's burn this motherfucker down! Come on, Pookie! Let's burn it, Pookie! Let's burn this motherfucker down! Let's burn it down! Let's burn it! So you guys maybe should just suck it up and go to White Castle.
Kumar: You can always get your work done in the car.
Harold: Let's do it.
Kumar: All right. Awesome. Then listen, listen - no matter what, we are not ending this night without White Castle in our stomachs. Agreed?
Harold: Agreed.
[shakes Kumar's hand then gives him pound]
Burger Shack Employee: Wise choice. You guys might have wanted to stay away from our special sauce tonight. Me and Pookie, we added a secret ingredient. I'll give you a hint. It's semen.
[bursts out laughing]
Harold: [Smirks] Semen?
Burger Shack Employee: Animal semen.

Something I saw recently:

Perdita Durango - Completely fucked up and intense Tarantino-esque flick with tons of violence and other disturbing content - Javier Bardem is mind blowing in this.

amazing order:

Asshton, and I mean the double S!! You try and Punk me and I swear I will beat you senseless with a stool or any blunt instrument that is near by. mad.gif
Crawlie
@Ashton Kutcher

And I know number of people (me included) who would gladly join in the stool beating activities of 3 Lions...

Be warned...

To quote an associate.. "You, sir, are a wanker"

Now feck off...
BlueSte
I could suggest hundreds - lots have already been mentioned (commendations to Silva & RebellionLies )

Still, I never saw The Big Lebowski on any of the lists (though I am sure nixe was thinking it as one from the Coen brothers)

Oooh, you guys are making me so hotte! 3 Lions, I can't wait for you to take your "blunt instrument" out and beat me with it. I'm so down for Crawlie getting in the game and making it a man on man on man love fest.

I'm Ashton Kutcher, I'm awesome!
canuck
why does the instrument for beatings always have to be blunt?? Is this just for historical reasons?? Thats my question...Whats wrong with me bringing my axe...and using the sharp end??
Keydeck
Is it just me or does Ashton Kutcher remind anyone of Marcus Blair.

I would definitely recommend "Zoltan: Hound of Dracula" as a must see movie. Haven't seen it in years so if anyone has a copy knocking around please let me know.

QUOTE
Doing some military blasting, soldiers uncover a crypt of the Dracula family. A curious soldier opens a coffin and pulls a wooden stake from the shrouded body... As you do. The veiled body stirs and then out leaps Zoltan, Hound of Dracula! He jumps the guard and kills him, then in true Lassie style noses the lid of the nearest coffin and removes a stake from the body. Dracula's servant, scar-faced Schmidt is about to resurrect Dracula when the tomb begins to collapse and he and Zoltan are forced to flee.

How about:

Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino..

Now there's a blast from the past! "Number 5, alive!!!"

But c'mon people, also list more obscure stuff that we haven't seen yet... I've seen 95% of everything listed here so far, and want to know about hidden gems.

I can recommend the flick Blueberry - a "western" on an intensely visual psychadelic peyote trip - the fractal imagery at the end is some of the best I've ever seen anywhere.
Eleanor_Rigby
The Salton Sea
Boondock Saints
Boys Don't Cry
3 Lions
The Spectacular and slow painful death of Asshole Kutcher & Bum Boy Affleck.

OK, it isnt a film, but it should be.
RebellionLies
even more:

Hotel Rwanda
The Night Watch - Russian Sci-Fi Fantasy/Horror film.
Ong-Bak
Adaptation
Zaoitici
Returner - Japanese Action Sci-Fi Film, not very original but extremely fun to watch.
Dazed and Confused
Ghost in the Shell
Blade Runner
Heat
Casshern - Another Japanese Action Sci-Fi. Adapted from an old Cartoon series.
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
nixe
@BlueSte - Actually I was thinking of the Big Lebowski (and Raising Arizona) when I wrote `anything by the Coen Brothers´.

@canuck - Whenever the subject of bludgeoning people with blunt instruments comes up (as it does) I always think of Alan Rickman in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (crap movie but I love Alan Rickman):
Sherriff of Nottinghams Cousin: Why a spoon cousin? Why not an axe or a knife?
Sherriff: Cos it´s dull you twit, it´ll hurt more

Theres a good thread with more recommendations here.
And I also started a thread a couple of hours before this one recommending Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story the family guy movie that wont be out in theatres, but its pretty funny, just like a long episode but with more swearing.
Not many recent movies that I really like though.
Gen
Really funny, I saw it in the theaters. It's on at 20:15 on ARD aka Das Erste. For everyone who's sick of Oktoberfest or just plain sick or broke or lazy... if you can't read this summary though, you needn't bother, as it's genuine German so they speak rather quickly. Set in Berlin. Brothers separated by the Wall, reunited when the mother dies and demands that they reconcile or they can't inherit anything.

to be merged to movie recommendations later.

QUOTE

German movie edition:

Das Leben der Anderen was great - wonderful acting from some top German actors - Martina Gedeck, Stephan Koch et al

Also with Martina Gedeck, Elementarteilchen as well as Moritz Bleibtreu, Franke Potente, Nina Hoss, Christian Ulmen. Strange French book makes stranger German movie, but with great acting and overall very interesting.

With a completely unknown actress: Requiem, about the last-known exorcism that took place in Germany. Very cool movie - freaky but also kind of sad. The unknown actress, Sandra Hüller has this amazing quality about her - I call it ugly-pretty. The director is Hans-Christian Schmid, who's apparently pretty famous.

Edit: Now I remember what he was famous for recently: he directed another great movie called Lichter, about life on the German-Polish border.
