actually was a required movie in our high school curriculum. they cut out the curbing and the shower rape so we didnt need permission slips or anything, but yeah. great film.

Derailed was one of the few movies that came out in the last few months that was worth watching, not saying a heck of a lot considering most movies to have come out in the last year have been utter crap.
Some other good ones include
Fun with Dick and Jane and
Worlds Fastest Indian. Now that I think about it, all 3 only really stand out because everything else has been such drivel.
I just watched
Puff, Puff, Pass and it is a very funny entertaining movie, highly recommended.

Left Behind Fascinating movie, only based on the first book though, hope they make some sequels. A good choice for those who feel the Da Vinci Code is a bit too theologically presumptuous!
China White Serpentine Fucking cool movie. Awesome.

I'm amazed that not one
Fellini film was mentioned in this thread. If you haven't seen
8 1/2, check it out. One of the best films ever made.
Also check out
Tarkovsky's sci-fi masterpiece
Solyaris, not previously mentioned in this thread.

I have recently tried to expand my view of German Cinema and have recently watched
Das Experiment and
Das Wunder von Bern. Both pretty good.
I don't suppose I really need to tell anybody about
Das Boot do I?
I haven't seen
Lola Rennt/Run Lola Run yet, but it's supposed to be pretty good. Trip to Amazon.de, I think.

Run Lola Run is not bad. An interesting concept is how they play on time- what could have been if you did something a minute later etc etc. Wouldn't rave about it though, acting is appalling and extremely predictable

I think it is the worst movie I have ever been to the cinema to see.

Hard Candy very intense, very interesting, very unlike other movies, and very watchable. Cant say too much about it without ruining it. Amazing performance by the young Ellen Page. Definitly a must-watch.
Spun. Has everything one could want, drug use, violence, nudity, humour, and the best bits are the awesome animation sequences that occur throughout the movie.

Trying hard to think of some of those not-so-hyped ones which I thought were brilliant, and this is what I came up with:
Holy Man
Life
You've Got Mail
Vanilla Sky
And of course, although it was very much hyped, you can't miss my current favorite of all time, the Lord of the Rings trilogy. :-)

Here are some of my faves (depends on my mood when I wanna watch them though!):
Crash
Clockwork Orange
Love Actually
Finding Nemo
The Deer Hunter
Saturday Night Fever
Pulp Fiction
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Monty Python's Life of Brain
Road Trip (for those silly days)
Oooh just too many to list!! Obviously the obligatory LOTR Trilogy (how can any film compete with that?!?!) as well as the cheesy but great Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman and Top Gun!!
Watched Top Gun the other day in German and it was soooo weird

...just doesn't have the same effect when it's dubbed does it? Wish the Germans would play films on tv in original languages and put subtitles on instead!

Yesterday I picked up BBC's Planet Earth at Saturn (Planet Erde) for only 19.95 euros. I have always been a huge fan of nature documentaries and David Attenborough in particular, but so far this series is completely blowing me away. Most amazing Nature doc yet.
The DVD's are of episodes 1-5, the next 6 episodes are being aired starting in November, and I guess will be released on DVD sometime next year...

Thanks

not sure, think it will depend on the kid - the narration should be understandable for a 10 year old. And the footage is brilliant and should be ageless.
A word of warning though: there is a bit more violence in this series than in previous BBC doc's. It's spectacular though - there is a wolf hunt from the air, a wild dog hunt from the air, great white sharks chomping on seals in slow motion, etc. Most ten-year old boys would probably love that stuff, but some parents might not be so happy about it...

I don't want to start an entirely new thread for this, so I hope this is the right place to also
ask for recommendations.
Has anyone seen
Little Miss Sunshine yet? Has it even come out in Munich yet?
I am thinking about going tonight, so I am wondering if its good. It is between that (going to the cinema) and another meal of couscous...don't think I can take anymore couscous.

Spent the afternoon (yes it is that long) watching "Once upon a time in America" - oh my god how dull! Possibly the most boring film I have watched.
It has all the elements - gangsters, De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sergio Leone directing but it never gets going for the whole 200 mins. Avoid.
I can recommend Amores Perres though - wicked film.

Someone lent me 'Night on Earth' a little while back: It was a German version without the option of English subtitles and I speak little German, hardly any French or Italian (and obviously no Finnish): Even though as a result 3/5ths of it was unintelligeable from a spoken word point of view, I thought it was a great film; especially the sequence with the manic Italian cab driver...
Just wish I coud see it in English
