hi Bhoy,
It seems that UK tv sets do not get the cable signal properly in Germany. . When I was livin in Munich some years ago I had to buy a german TV in order to get cable signal. My UK tv set was useless. If you have a PC you can buy a TV card and plug it on the cable socket. It worked to me too, and the TV card was bought in UK.

There was a similar discussion on the britboard a while back:

Hi,
If the TV has come from the UK, it is unlikely to to give you sound on the German cable/antenna system. The sound carrier is transmitted 6.0mhz behind the picture carrier here, where as in the UK it is 6.5mhz delay.
Some UK tv sets do have a setting in the installation menu that allows you to determin the sound carrier.. If it does, then select Pal-G.
A cheap way around this is to buy a Video and use that as your "tuner"

It's not a delay, it's an IF-offset. PAL-I (UK) has an offset of 6MHz, PAL B/G (Germany) has an offset of 5.5MHz. Newer, or better TVs can tune to either by changing reception standard, but cheaper, older TVs are usually stuck on the standard of the country of purchase.
As Grinner so rightly says, a cheap VCR solves the problem by tuning the local signal and passing it (e.g.) over SCART (which is not tuner dependant) to the TV. Downside is you change channels on the VCR, and must be sure the VCR does not automatically go into standby when not used. Upside is that a cheap VCR costs €60-70 - much less than a new TV or modifying an old one.

Hey thanks for this useful topic! My English t.v. came over last week and I couldn't get it to work properly so bought a German video and HEY PRESTO! Thanks TT!

Ok, heres the problem.
We arrived a few weeks ago in Munich and today the guy came to connect Kabel Deutschland.
When we turn the TV on which is we purchased in England we can only see two channels but they have no sound. Even if I scan for more etc. Dont get anything more than what appears to be a betting channel and TV5.
Now we still have an old TV from the States and with that we see all the channels. We could go on watching
TV on this old crappy set.
Has anyone else had this problem and is there way of fixing it so that our newer widescreen English TV works?

YL6 or Grinner shall be along in a moment. Until then, watch the old crappy TV.

Sounds like a PAL / NTSC problem. Can you tell us the models?

You don't need people like me. You simply need to search on a rather useful forum call
Toytownmunich. Who knows, you might even find a posting called
Tuning British TV sets for German cable - is this possible?Wonderful place, Toytown, dontchaknow...

The problem with your UK tv is not only is it Pal-I (not Pal-G) It also has a different tuner in it.. The European tuners have a Hyperband tuner..
Simle solution is to Buy a cheap Germa VCR and then use that as a Tuner, or use the Cabble Deutscheland box!
You could also Get satellite TV.. and get a few more channels..
Try using the search function.

I have a last question.
Would it work if i used one of those pvr units, that record on a hard disk.
A german one of course, but this would be much more use to me than having to buy a VCR

Yes,
Just as long as it has some kind of TV tuner and you have a cable service too!
My suggestion would be to put the tv to the other side of the room...

I've got a reception problem too...
I came over with a brand spanking new super dooper tv and the normal analogue reception works fine. However, the inbuilt digital tuner doesn't pick up the german digital signal. The guy at Samsung in England promised me it would. Was he lying? or is the antenna in my block (it's a communal one) too old and shit?
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The communal antenna probably is old and shite, although you should still pick up
something with it. Try an indoor antenna, they cost about €20. Also see this thread, which has resurfaced today:
Digital TV in Munich - DVB-T antenna, Digital only since 30.May.2005

Yeah, but
German digital TV receivers in the UK would probably be of more use.

Do you really mean "inbuilt
Freeview digital tuner"? If so then it's not compatible with standard DVB-T transmissions here in Germany as Freeview is specific to UK...
