I have never been to an opera and would love to go for one but a really nice interesting one. I have no clue where to get information or even where these are held in Munich. anyone has a clue?

What are the upcoming programs? How much do they cost?
would anyone else like to go with?
HollyGolightly
I would love to go but it would have to be in the next week or else I cant got until September. (Im going to be gone)

But the idea is great...I know a few people have done this before... biggrin.gif

Staatstheater Munich

if you click on 'schedule' it details shows in further locations in Munich.
enjoy!

I heard that if you go to the theater half an hour before the shows starts you can get really really reduced tickets...does anyone know about this? I've never done it.
UrbanAngel
Profundo may be the guy to ask, since he sings at the Opera house. He also posts lots about operas, if you want to do a search.
canuck
PM Profundo. He should know.

I dont have a clue when and where this is..so once we decide on a good event then we can decide..

Romeo and Juliet was supposed to be a good one but it was on the 17th of July.. sad.gif

I just saw reduced prices for students that cool! something like €8 thats surely worth it

I suggest going on a trip to Verona for an Opera there. I did this with a bus, two nights hotel and two operas for 100 €. There are great deals, and there is something special about sitting in an outdoor colosseum...and you can see Juliet's balcony if you are interested.
bonydebbie
WOWOW for 100€ thats a perfect deal but how in world u get to that package?
Shaggy
deb, I'd be up for an Verona Trip... can pack a few in the car and head down for an overnight.
canuck
For München operas check out. Then click on Spielplan and then Juli.

Operas here are quite pricey. Fortunately most people buy tickets months in advance and are left with extra tickets due to cancellations. If you go on your own and smile pretty someone will usually approach you and give you an extra ticket.

Lighter Opera for beginners is anything Mozart. Entfuehrung aus der Serail is a good choice but I believe that's over.

Die Zauberfloete is a perfect introduction to Operetta and is playing on July 23 and 25.

Gounod's Faust would be another suggestion.

Orpheus and Eurydice is a beautiful story but I think Glucks adaptation is a bit heavy as will be Wagner's Meistersinger although fantastic if you're up for it.

Please note these are only my opinions according to my taste.

There is a second show this sunday, so you still have a chance to get tickets! I will be at that one...

Profundo has fantastic stage presence and is one of the most powerful voices I have ever heard, so if you can get tickets it will be worth just to see him perform. I believe he is playing the duke in Romeo and Juilet. smile.gif Very excited to see this.

Shaggy, if you have more sitzplatz, count me in with Katrin. Or we could drive if there is a larger group. I actually did the bus trip from Nürnberg, two years ago. I will find out the company, but it is the similar bus reisen that have the ski trips in winter. No frills, arrive and watch the Opera, and then you have the late evening to walk around, and the next day to explore Verona. You also are right near Lake Garda, which is also a nice excursion. It was beautiful; I saw Tosca (great) and Aida (overdone), but the best part was the surroundings in the colloseum!

Found this link from Munich ab 145 €

but I am certain there are better deals
bonydebbie
alright people, i could check dates for the a verona opera and put it up here if anyone else has a car and is willing to drive few of us, (promised we will behave in the back seat)we can all pitch in for fuel! If there are just one car then I guess its a bad idea ...
sure thing a bus trip would be a fun ride too

I went to see Rigoletto last year with Europa Reisen (I think), all inclusive for E75,00. We left immediately after the performance so didn't stay in Verona over night.

Fun experience but not the best conditions to see an Opera in. I would be interested in joining if you decide on a good Opera.
Eleanor_Rigby
Just had a look at the program, I'd be up for Aida or La Boheme.

I'd love to go if it was in Munich. Verona sounds great but my work schedule is crazy so I can't go away at the moment.
bonydebbie
this is my first opera and if i like it and its fun (which i could tell if my bf doenst fall asleep) we can surely do more in Munich.. Nicole will be in on that too!

May be a all dressy GNO to the opera cool.gif ..not such a bad idea..
TexasTornado
Mbangura and myself want to see Profundo sing before she heads to Chi-Town.

We should do a Toytown night at the opera.
Shaggy
Opera in Mü sounds a great idea... it's been talked about so often but never organised..

For Verona, how about the weekend of Aug 13th as Monday is a vacation? Means mimimal impact on work. Could head down for 1-2 nights...
bonydebbie
Then thats me + 2 on that weekend..my family is here huh.gif
TexasTornado
The 13th souds good to me. Do we know if Profundo is singing?
bonydebbie
@TT
sorry we were talking about verona not in Munich.. dnt think profundo will be singing there ph34r.gif

I have to wait until Monday to confirm Shaggy and Bonydebbie as Katrin is hiking in the alps until then. But sounds great!
profundo
Ok. My modem was down for a day and I apologize for the delay. Now...

Munich's opera season ends July 31st.

The only shows that I would recommend that are left to see this season in Munich are:

Die Zauberflöte. Two shows: This Saturday the 23rd and Monday the 25th, 7pm.
Roméo et Juliette. Last show: This Sunday, the 24th, 7pm.
I also have a __tiny__ part in Die Meistersinger on the 31st but only go if you love opera and want to sit through 5 hours of it that night. It begins at 4pm.
Other than that you will have to settle for a show that I am not in (no biggie, really) and take in Faust on either Wednesday the 27th, 7pm or Saturday the 30th, 7pm.

I know that so far Toronto is going to Romeo on Sunday and that Pao/Hellcat are going to Zauberflote on Monday.

Here's a complete guide to all the shows with links on how to buy tickets online.

Tips: smile.gif
If you are planning to go to Verona or somewhere else, I say go for it.
Dress up as much as you want to, just keep in mind everyone else wears Sunday best.
Find a synopsis in English (see my guide above) and print it out and take it with you.
It sounds like Monday the 25th might be the day. 7pm. Anyone care to go that soon?
I think JoolyB and perhaps TT and mbrangua were thinking about it.
JoolyBooly
cool, thanks for that! So did we decide if we're going last night? I think everyone chickened out, no? I'll have a look for tix...

Yes Moonboot.
Some student prices are available just before the show, or you can see if they haven't sold out and get some good deals. This being the festspiele (a very busy month) I don't expect there to be many seats left but you can try.

Hotels also buy blocks of tickets for their guests to perhaps use. When their guests don't use them the hotel sends a guy down who pedals them off to the public. You can often see them around and as far as I know, it's legal as long as they are asking for the price that is printed on the ticket. Make sure they have a map of the seatplan with them and can point out the seat before you fork over the cash.

For anyone with time tonight, there's a bizarre performance of Dido and Aeneas on at the Prinzregententheater at 9pm.

They've taken bits of Purcell's opera (synopsis) , modernised it, and mixed it up with some spoken Bavarian cabaret (the group "die bairische Geisha") and the Finnish Men's Choir Shouters (Huutajat), who shout the witches' sections. Aeneas is represented as a modern-day crooner, the chief witch is well done by a male singer (all those high notes...), while Dido performs in more traditional dress/style.

It lasts just over an hour, and may leave you a bit confused. Probably best if you can understand some German.

...ya folks i'd seriously consider any plans along these lines too -

Rigoletto is a real crowd pleaser [absolutely nothing to do with the extravagent nudity in the opening scene ... all very artistic etc wink.gif ] and La Boheme is cool, also Bizet's Carmen Suite [opera/ballet] and Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) are well worth paying to see i think [sorry, these are just random bits of personal opinion...]

actually, typing about Rigoletto reminds me of a 'play' i went to see in secondary school in ireland - all the transition year students (transitioning from junior certificate to leaving certificate, mostly aged 15) were told to attend this performance by an outside theatre company during school hours...

so we all packed excitedly into the school-hall - anything that was strange, or unusual or which took us out of irish class always provoked this response ...

and then into the hall arrived the actors - one of whom was a very attractive female and got all of us males extra-excited rolleyes.gif

of course, that was before she took off all her clothes ohmy.gif - which she did in the second act...

Disappointingly the company were refused permission to perform the third and final act due to a "misunderstanding regarding the length of the production" which was a pity because i really enjoyed that particular 'play' and my old school always promoted the arts so well ...

anyway, regarding the opera's in munich...
bonydebbie
Anyone recommend any good shows to catch this week or even the next.

@profundo
u have a pm wink.gif
profundo
Check out Konigskinder or Falstaff. Both good shows.

People have been asking about how to get tickets. (perhaps I should start a new thread?)
bonydebbie
thanks a million. When are u on stage next? would be nice to see someone known.

And yes you could start a new thread on tickets or conitue here...
profundo
Thread Created.
Just an informative thread about how to get tickets in general. Check it out and post back any thoughts on your experience of getting tickets, etc. there.

I am not on stage here again till the 22 of Dec. with some time off now.

And the nudity that Jimmy Jax is referring to in Rigoletto is not part of Munich's Rigoletto- which is with kid friendly monkeys. ph34r.gif
