Hi. I am currently living in Prague and plan to move to Germany next summer. I want to spend the first month in an intensive langague school learning German. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good school. I was thinking of the goethe institute. Any comments.
Thanks.

I did four intensive months (every day for 5 hours/day) with Deutsch Institut for Auslaender in Hamburg when I first arrived. It's associated with the Goethe Institut (identical assessment and teaching standards--pricing too, approved by Goethe) and it was excellent. I can give no higher recommendation.

It ain't cheap though. I paid 840 euros/two-month session. I think Goethe in Muenchen is a bit more, depending on which course you take. For example, evening courses cost less, but the number of hours you get will also be less.

I've heard very good things about courses at the Volkshochschule in Muenchen. A lot easier on the wallet but quality is quite high. There are plenty of lower-end options depending on where you'll be in Germany.

I have heard the Inlingua in Sendlinger Tor is very good, and not badly priced. Worth giving it a try !

Solidly recommend the Goethe. Went there two months intensive. Stress but good.

Was it really expensive at Goethe Jeremy ? I heard that although Goethe is one of the best, it's also one of the most expensive. I am already between mittelstufe I and II but need to keep learning before I forget the rules. What little rules there actually are in German, as most things seem to be exception to the rule !

On the way to work I saw an advertisement of a German language school.

I'm taking the Goethe evening classes right now. Other people in the class who've taken classes elsewhere say the Goethe is infinitely better. Indeed, our teacher is superb; friendly, funny, and knows when to push and when not (she doesn't bust balls about ein/eine/die/der/das during the first few weeks to allow you to concentrate on vocabulary and such). Highly recommended.

BTW, there is an all-day class or the 2 hour at night class. From all I've heard the day class isn't that much more advanced BUT they do get the added benefit of much practice.

But is it expensive ? I've always heard that the Goethe Institute was expensive, and now that my company have stopped paying for my German lessons, I have to do something myself now !

I know that Inlingua in Sendlinger Tor is really not that expensive and heard that it is quite good there.

I went to inlingua for a month in Oct/Nov 2003. Loved it!! I will be going back sometime in February. Costs about 450 Euro per month. That price does not include books. I paid about 55 Euro for Book 1 and 1+. I went to the 9-12:30, Mon-Fri. class.

i've done an intensive at goethe, it was definitely intensive (9-5), but i didn't find it great value for money... the class was up to 8 people sometimes... too big for me... and the teacher seemed to have her own agenda and not really want to tailor the course to our needs...

i then did some evenings (2 months) with http://www.bws-germanlingua.de/ which is between the hbf and sonnenstr. and my girlfriend has just done a 2 week intensive there (10-2)... the class sizes are much smaller (3 people) and the progess seems much more significant... AND it isn't as expensive as goethe...

another advantage (in my opinion) is that a lot of non-english speakers (eastern europeans etc) use the school and so there is little or NO english spoken in the classes OR in the coffee breaks...

I've taken 2 separate courses (2 months each) with Goethe and I recommend it.

The courses I took were 6:15-8:15pm from Mon to Thursday. Both teachers I had were great and the class atmosphere was good. The only bad point about Goethe is the cost of the course...but if your company pays for the course then its sweet!!! I'm actually thinking of taking the next evening course which starts in March.

I recommend it...Two thumbs up and a flurry to the solar plexus...

[I'm right now in der Deutschkurs für Ausländer bei die Universität München, it's a great course, it's really intensive!! I have learned in one month and a half so much! I can have conversations already and I understand some things on tv. The cost is 620€ for every course, each last 2 months. It's a bit stressy cause you have to learn so much so fast but I highly recommend it.

Hi,

The spring semester registration at the Volkshochschule started today. You can have a look at the courses being offered in their website -- www.mvhs.de.
