Has anyone travelled in the area around the Mosel? We are looking to spend 3-6 days there in August and I'd be happy for any tips of what to see, do or where to stay. We were thinking about doing a bit of a bike tour, so that advice would be especially appreciated, but really any first hand knowledge is what I need. Thanks!

Hi showem, i'm going there on the invitation of some German friends from 5th to 8th August, staying in a tent to help out at a beer festival.

At the same time, will be checking out those questions you have to repeat the trip later with a nice lady by car. Will post more stuff after I return, if I'm sober enough then, hehe. smile.gif

My friend's uncle owns a winery near Longuich direct on the Mosel. I was up there wine tasting a few times. The area and wine are great. I'll try to dig up some hotel/B&B names for ya. For starters, this link has hotels/weinguts on it.

My uncle's girlfriend's family owns a vineyard there in Zell, on the Mosel. If you like I can get the address and details on the B&B next door. The wine is gorgeous (their name is Wagner), and the area is lovely too. Just PM me.

Thanks for the tips so far. Keep them coming!! Any more uncle-wine connections will be appreciated.

@UrbanAngel, will appreciate that. Also, if they know some wineyards where we can actually rent a room in the wineyard will be great. Thanks. smile.gif
UrbanAngel
@Why8 - they have rooms to rent on the vineyard. The website is : http://www.liebezumwein.de, but already PMed Showem.

I emailed them yesterday, but have yet to hear back from them...
UrbanAngel
Well, maybe leave them a couple of days, and if you haven't heard anything I can call (or you could wink.gif)

Had a friend over from London on the weekend and decided to head to the valley to check it out. Was amazing dropping into the valley and seeing wall to wall vines. We just followed the B53 which winds along beside the river. From the comfort of my car i noted that it looked like a nice bike track.

Given our short time constraints the two main stops for us were Cochem and Bernkastel Kues. Kues is a must.

accommodation didn't seem a problem, even though school holidays were on, lots of camping sites and zimmer frei.

We stayed in this little village called Trittenheim. We were making a u-turn to go back to a wine shop and behind Cafe Mack was this huge old 1910 homestead/winery with a zimmer frei sign out the front and wine in the cellar. Had a great night drinking on our balcony overlooking the Mosel River.

Highly highly recommended.

@kanupolo - thanks for sharing the info

Some questions: how long was the drive there -- 5 hours? And was there any traffic jam? Sounds like a great trip...
Showem
What a coincidence. Trittenheim is where we've booked our rooms for.
UrbanAngel
Yup, 5 hours to that area, or even 6.

My wife comes from Koblenz. Maximilians is a great biergarten and brewery on the banks of the river and is very popular, food good too. There are two castles called cat and mouse on the river that are well known, one does an amazing birds of prey display where you can stroke an Eagle owl and have an eagle swoop down and take a dead chick off your head at around 40mph!!!(I didnt volunteer for that though!!) Vineyards everywhere, Mosel is prettier side. Koblenz has lot of restuarants and some great Tex-Mex bars with plenty going on at night. Enjoy yourself!!!

Here's the Bierfestival at Mosel this weekend, drop by and look out for a Chinese Asian guy selling beer (yours truly) tongue.gif

Having lived all over Germany for the last 28 yrs, I can say that the Mosel River is one of the most beautiful areas ever. Try either flying into Hahn airport with Ryanair if you're from out of country or driving. Best place to stay is in Traben-Trarbach (15min from the airport). The Mosel-Schloesschen hotel is located on the river at the old bridge on Traben's side and takes all major credit cards. They'll give you an American discount on rooms if you mention "Code U.S."

From Traben you can take boat rides either up river towards Bernkastell-Kues or down river towards Cochem. Both towns are beautiful. Above the bridge there is a tiny restaurant in the bridge tower where you can watch boats float by and folks walk by. For the physically fit, there is a walking path from the bridge up the mountain to Starkenburg. This town sits on vineyard cliffs overlooking Traben-Trarbach. Or for those who prefer bicycling, you can rent bikes on Trarbach's side at the end of the bridge. Wine tasting is normally free of charge all over town. Tourists haven't quite taken over Traben-Trarbach like they have in Bernkastell or Cochem. You still get the feeling that Germans live there. In Kroev, just a 5 min car ride there is a swimming pool and on the top of Traben's hill is a climbing forest station where kids can try their skills climbing from tree-to-tree. Just a bit higher up that hill is a grass airport where you can take glider flights.
