Editor Bob
I'm pleased to announce that from next week TT will be moving into the new age of the internet. The site will become 100% Mozilla-based only.

The switch over will happen 8am Monday 25.Jul.2005. From this time on the TT site will only be available via mozilla based browers. It might work on Safari and Opera, but these platforms won't be supported. Users of IE will only see an error message.

This applies for the whole site, the guide pages as well as the forum.

If you haven't made the switch already, you need to do so this week.

Click to download the Firefox webbrowser today.

OK, I know lots of people hate IE and it has its problems, but why exclude it?

I certainly won't be able to access TT from work anymore then. sad.gif
interplanetjanet
Somebody better get Mozilla installed for Topsy!
pepper
This is also a problem at our company, Microsoft is Microsoft so that's the standard. Luckily, I've managed to install Firefox.

Don't understand the reason to exclude IE.
Small Town Boy
Is this a wind-up? Are not 80 per cent of internet users using Internet Explorer?
scotsman
Nonsense!

I also think its an incredible move when you look at the statistics by browser summary.

How can this be justified? Gotta be a joke unless there is serious sponsorship coming from Firefox?
Kza
Nah your kidding. What specific "firefox only" feature do you plan on implementing?

Now I too prefer mozilla based browsers to IE, but from a webmaster perspective its pretty poor form to target a browser like that. Better would be to say "HTML version blah blah blah and above will only be supported".

Will, for example, text only broswers like ELinks be supported? Normally these text based broswers are highly standards compliant, they simply dont display images etc.

I guess I am just asking for more technical info, reasons, etc...

Now if the switchover date was April 1., I would understand wink.gif

EDIT: Actually, changed my mind, for security reasons alone it makes sense to deliberatly exclude IE, even if it technically works 100% fine in IE.
Yeti
What's the idea behind the change ? Or is it on a need to know basis ?
willy
I'm out too ... sad.gif
DrivinWest
D'oh! And I just switched form Firefox to Safari (I think I might maybe possibly like it better perhaps).

The idea seems rather progressive. I support it. Unless you're just having a laugh in which case I retract all I've said and instead say I knew you were joking all along.
Kings Town
And the reason for this?

Not that i object as i have been using FireFox for Donkeys but I'd be interested (as I'm sure many others are) to know why you are making this anti Microsoft move.

I'll never go back to firefox...used it when it last had a major upgrade...never again...
gooner_gal
Well, just as well I'm moving to Berlin wink.gif No access for me from work any longer...

Users of IE will only see an error message.

you're kidding, right?

I'm sure that the IT administrators at my employer will happily switch to FireFox as the worldwide corportate standard just so I (and about 5 others in the company) can view TT... yea, that'll go over great.

note, personally, I would love to see Microsoft loose their market dominance. and I view Firefox as better than IE. But I am not at my hme / personal computer most of the day...
interplanetjanet
@Chicago - you know, you do have the option of *not* viewing TT from work. Life probably won't end.

Edit: Though I think mine would. Thank goodness for mozilla at work!

Heretic. You'll be trying to convince us that you won't fall off the edge of the disc if you cycle north past Ismaning next.

I'm more concerned by this move, as there are a lot of general browsers out there, all potential newbies to TT, and IE is still 80% of the market.
Owain Glyndwr
many people who work in large corporations have no control over which browser they can use. certainly can't go around installing any old software on my pc without getting an admin to do it. That means i won't be able to read TT after 25th, and i think many others won't be able to either.

Won't this drop in users have a detrimental effect on advertising revenue?

Making TT Firebox only will exclude many users, at least during the working day (maybe Munich's productivity will go up?)

I think Ed Bobs been bribed by Siemens, O2, BMW et al to increase productivity amongst their ex-pats, lol.
Kza
Im sure it will still work for IE users if you turn your javascript off or something. Unless the whole thing is being reimplemented in XUL or something, after all, html is html...

And even then, there will be tricks to get it to work...

Anyone know if this is coming from invision? I didnt see anything on their site about it...

Actually its a good way to get rid of the riff raff, do we really want people here who use IE, or even worse, couldnt hack their way around a bit of anti-ie javascript?
interplanetjanet
I just had to check my calendar to make sure it's not April 1st.
Katrina
Are you trying to bump up your click rates before meeting the journalist from the SZ at the Biergarten tonight Bob?
Because that's what it looks like to me.
Kza, shut yer cakehole
potbelly
If this is not a Joke, then what an incredibly short sighted and bizzare move.

Many companies use IE or Netscape as there default browser.

What on earth is the logic and the sense behind restricting access.? I though the idea of website development is to make your site workable with a number of different browsers. Oder ?

It makes not the slightest bit of sense to me & while I can use Mozilla, alot of people can't & therefore makes using the website pointless ...

Well it's editor bob's website... His choice & perrogative, Good luck wacko.gif
Kiwistylz
Jeez this is crazy...im oout as well...
Johnny English
biggrin.gif . Nice one Bob - you got around 50% of these suckers hooked!

C'mon people, wise up. There is a better chance of Editor Bob winning the next Eurovision song contest than blocking IE.
Nicky
Don't understand. I enjoy this site and meeting the TTers. Just about everyone I know has IE. Why should I download Firefox? I know some users prefer it, but there are still more IE users than Firefox ones. Please explain. Or do we just give up using this site to exchange views and send each other emails? Not so good for the advertisers if you make the site inaccessible.
gideon
oh bugger i only have IE and safari on mine at work and only IE at home, mac bunny that i am.
i'm all for progress, But EB dont do a boo.com and create a web site that excludes users! remember were not all IT people - thinks - if the wheel aint broke...
Jimbo
Come on peeps - this is a wind up.

(isn't it?)
Jeeves
This has to be a wind-up.
Exclude IE and you preclude people from logging on from airports, internet cafés etc. So it ain't gonna happen.
Owain Glyndwr
i hope it bloody well is.
Jillanne
maybe its a test to see who would miss their TT?
Jeeves
It's certainly generated a lot of traffic, short-term at least.
Kiwistylz
This has to be an Editor Bob funny...can anyone remember any other Editor Bob wind ups on here??? If it isnt a joke its just plain crazzzzzy wacko.gif
Kings Town
Well Mr. Bob is being very quiet, He must be lurking somewhere...
scotsman
I reccon EB is testing the water and trying to see if he can completely influence all the people that use TT into changing over to Firefox...If he manages this he shall be granted eternal life and full Jedi status untill the end of the world.

In the words of the tennis master...

incompetent fool, an offense against the world.

Not in living memory...a few sort of 'jokes' apparently issued from Ed Bob back in the day via the medium of an alternative user name, but that's not been reported for a very long time indeed.
Owain Glyndwr
funny that he hasn't replied to this thread to confirm or deny that it is a hoax. This makes me think its a hoax. But why? Ed Bob is not exactly known for his pranks.
gideon
mmmm... the EB version of a ministerial leak. he'll be telling us next that...

"it was only one of many suggestions written in a policy study and was not a serious proposal nor confirmed wish of the administraion to etc etc etc etc blah di blah..."

SPIN BOB, love it - and if your not joking, the bloody thing better be SAFARI - SOGOODY. or i'll send the boys round. biggrin.gif
brokenm
I don't know why it says the 25th I can not read TT forum now as it only gives me an error message. Did he implement it already?
Owain Glyndwr
how can you have read the thread and answered if you browser is showign an error?
Kings Town
Maybe he took the advice and switched to Firefox
Crawlie
Well if it is not a wind up then that's me out. No chance of changing at work due to anal IT regulations

To install Firefox without Administrator rights:

- just select the Custom install, and select as a target folder one you can write to, such as a new "Firefox" folder on your Desktop

TaDa! And there's nothing your IT department can do about it. Trust me - I would have disallowed this for our users if I could.
parnell
Out as well...
Jeeves
QUOTE

No but there's a lot the personnel dept can do if they happen to find out that I've been installing unauthorised software.
kitkat64
Exactly Jeeves - just because you are in IT, doesn't mean you can go around willy-nilly installing whatever you want.

I'll be out if that's the case(switchover to FireFox)
gideon
juat in case, maybe we should start a "goodbye" thread? smile.gif
Jeeves
or an alternative TT night?
