To install Firefox without Administrator rights:
- just select the Custom install, and select as a target folder one you can write to, such as a new "Firefox" folder on your Desktop
TaDa! And there's nothing your IT department can do about it. Trust me - I would have disallowed this for our users if I could.
i cannot save ANYTHING to the C:\ drive. Network drives only. All HDDs are read only unless you have admin rights.

JB That rhyme had not escaped my attention either

Na I reckon Ed B's either pissed (off) that we're not turning up in force for his drinkies tonight, or, far more likely, he's just testing the temperature of the water for some nefarious purpose.
He is not withdrawing support for IE, it would be suicide.

You must have some RW rights. Try using C:\dokumente und einstellungen\username\lokale einstellungen (this is a hidden folder, you need to switch them on first) \ temp
Or get a flashdrive and install FF to there.

Not always that easy. To give an example.
On our PC's nobody had Admin rights (except me so I am Ok). Cannot acceess the registry. All software is audited and a check is done after every logon where non-allowed software is deleted.
USB is not available and all non standard directories are deleted during the logon process. For most people here it would be almost impossible to get round this. Plus the Proxy server address is hidden.

This has got to be a joke. If not, then I'm not too happy about paying for a supporters subscription for a site that will be a pain in the ass to access. What about those who try to access it from computers other than their own? Or those not familiar with the site, looking for information, but can't find it because they are using the IE? (as, according to the chart scotsman linked, the majority are).
I'm calling bullshit on this one.

Im sure Ed Bob and the SZ journalist are just avin a larf, but its great news as far as I am concerned.
I remember a few years back, I was enjoying being on a rosenheim based chat forum, a bit like this, but it was german, and all of a sudden they switched to some weird activex based interface thing, which totally didnt work on linux. Only windows. Couldnt even download something for free to make it work. I had to miss out.
Whereas this time, those whinging are either 1. not able to install firefox, which means its not your computer its a work one and you shouldnt be surfing tt anyway, or 2. too friggen lame to quickly download A FREE program off the net! Its not like firefox costs money you know, and it IS better and more secure than IE.
But thats all pretty redundant really as theres heaps of ways to get arround it, and im sure its all just a gag anyway.

everyone can install firefox because there is always at least one folder you can install software to. you could try portable firefox - no registry. all you need is one writable area - even on a network disk and the check for software won't know its there. sad but true.
At any rate, this is basically impossible to implement and besides - a killer for page views. Anybody that has heard EB talk about his google optimizations will know that page views matter to him and that he'd never kick out all those ie unique impressions. It's like burning money.

Well TT that'll be goodbye from me. I work on a Unix based workstation, am a contractor and although I have Netscape on this machine, I can't get the proxy settings from the IT dept without causing a lot of fuss and more importantly, raising questions. As it is I access the internet using someone elses password because contractors aren't supposed to have internet access. Add to that the shit I'd be in for installing software onto this 12000 Euro machine and you soon realise that it's more sensible to say Cheerio and keep my job.
BTW - If anyone reading this is going on the TT sailing trip Sunday, Captain Bligh has asked me to skipper the second boat. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on my first TT event but have to say it will probably be the last!

This is simply not true. We have some of the best auditing software on the market, our pc's are locked down and our physical audit still turns up software we didn't know about. If it makes no registry or WMI entry, you cannot see it. All you can do is simply get rid of all unknown executables, but that doesn't work either. You can zip your firefox folder when you're not using it. IT knows all, sees all, and controls all is a myth. I have 900 pc's that my IT is responsible for and we spend a lot of money trying to stop just such things - it's a waste of time. A clever user will always find a way.

The new deadline is now 31.Dec.2007.
Please ensure that you have installed
Firefox, or another Mozilla-based webbrowser, within the next 30 months if you wish to continue using the TT service.
