Hi there,

Is anyone heading out his way for the Anafest starting this weekend in Forchheim?

Check it out here: Annafest Forchheim.

I haven't been to the Annafest, but I've also heard it's meant to be rather cool. It's held in the woods apparantly, which must be great on a hot day. Takes about 3 hours each way from Munich with a Bayern Ticket or Schönes Wochenende.

I have been to Forchheim to sample the beers though, and all four breweries brew pretty tasty beer. Very traditional breweries. And at the Annafest, there are no less than 24 different breweries present biggrin.gif

Edit: @Klein1: Thanks a lot for the tip! I would never have remembered.

Well, I guess with 24 different breweries, I'm gonna have a damn good hangover!!! wacko.gif

Good thing I'm unemployed and won't have to go to work!!!

Hopefully the weather will not be as it is now, i.e. thunder & lightning! unsure.gif

Would've been nice to meet some people there, altho I know its quite a way to travel. That's why we haven't been able to attend meet-ups in Münich yet.

@Edit: Think the locals would be offended if they heard you did not remember

This week began the ten or so day bier festival in Forcheim. This is Annafest! It is a festival similar to Oktoberfest, but with 90% Germans, with a spectacular setting. It is located on a hill that has many small biergartens set up in little alcoves that are quite isolated from one another by a dense array of trees. People can go there ~3,5 hours by RE (30 euro for five people) or by car ~ 2 hours!

After three years of trying (last year getting as far as Forchheim train station as the rain started), I finally made it to Annafest this weekend. And it was worth the wait! A great atmosphere and very cool location, in the woods above the town. It's everything the Oktoberfest isn't: cool woodland beer gardens instead of hot, smelly tents; a good atmosphere but sufficient seating; great beer instead of...

My only niggle is a minor one and only of concern to beer snobs like me: with so many breweries present (all serving completely different styles of beer), I wanted to try as many different beers as possible, but this was logistically difficult as they only serve beers in Maß glasses. And €6.50 a Maß is expensive for Franconia, where you normally pay €1.80 to €2.20 for a half-litre of beer.

But those are my only (minor) complaints; other than that, I'd highly recommend a visit! It's on this year until 4 August. There are some hotels in Forchheim, otherwise there are hundreds in Nürnberg, Erlangen and Fürth.

I'd been there yesterday with a couple of German friends and their family. Forcheim is a small and pleasant town close to (or part of) 'Frankische-Schweiz' (Franconian Switzerland). The best part is that, these places are its a bit typical and you dont see many tourists around. So, you can have a feel of festivals in Bavarian (or more precisely, Franconian) style. It was pretty hot yesterday, but the location in the woods and the drinks, gave us some respite.

Also, 'Frankische-Schweiz' (Franconian Switzerland) is said to have the most number of private breweries in the world. So, its worth it, to try different beer' over there. smile.gif

Infact, in this part of the year, its commonplace for the cities/towns/villages to hold these festivals. There are lots of fests happening at the moment all over Franconia/Bavaria.

Apart from that, I also went to 'Nuremberg Classic Air Festival' (Picnic Im Park). It was nice to lie on the ground and listen to the music. For the last song, all the people stood up with candle lights/sizzling fireworks in their hands. It was awesome to look at that scene, in the dark.

I would also like to inform you folks about the event in Nuremberg (next week), called 'BardenTreffen' (meeting of the bards). There are 60 bands (not bigtime bands, but bands from all over Europe/world), who will be playing at many main parts of the city. smile.gif
